Let unity be inscribed upon the
thoughts of every Republican.
Col. John 11. Deveaux, Business
Manager of the Tribone has been
suggested by his many friends as
one of the delegates from the State
at largest o tbeßepubiican National
Convention, And the writer takes
the occataion during the Colonel’s
absence from the city, to say that
no better selection could be made.
The New York Press closes an
admirable article in contradiction to
Horace Greeley’s advice: “Young
Men, go West.” as follows:
Stay East, young man. The East can get
along without you, but both you and it can
get along very well tagether if you will. If
you will only do in the East half the real
live, wideawake hustling that you would
have to do if you went West, you will be well
ofl in a few years. The capabilities of the
Eastern States are not half developed yet,
Bead, think, keep your eye# open for sug
gestions, and above all, work and you will
be ail right even it you don’t go West.
Effingham, 8. C. Feb. 20, 1888.
Hon. J. 11. Deveaux, Dear Sir;
—Please allow me space in your
valuable paper to state the follow
ing to our oppressors,
The f rce and untrammeled snff
lage is the pal adium of
liberty and all attempts to inter
fere with it, whether by overawing
or corrupting the voters, or by Leg
tslalure enactment should be con
demmed by all good citizens and
reprobated as n crime against civil
ization. All ,ve request of the
dominant race is what, the Consti
tution of the State and United
States guarantees, and with it we
will have general success in the
next election.
1 hope that Senator Chandler
will succeed in putting through his
Bill, and it he does, it will help the
cause a great deal and he will »y
--hibit raoi'C eatriotiVm than all of
those little Glenn Bill fellows.
F. B. Baker.
Bailey Mills, Feb’y 23. 1888
Col. J. 11. Deveaux, Editor
Tribune:—Knowing that this year
shell bring us to the ballot b»x ere
it close, to decide indirectly and
directly who will be our President.
Governor, Senator and Reprcsenta
tives injthe St ites. It might be
called the ypar of elections, and the
year of electing has come. The
voters should prepare for the task.
Now to the voters of the First Con
gressional District; we owe it to
ourselves as a people to call a con
vention in some central part of the
district, composed of the true repre
senative men, chosen and selected
by the people, and at that conven
tion arrangements should be madeto
send delegates to the State and
National conventions. All past
difference should be laid aside, and
the people ot districts should at
tend to their own business, allowing
outsiders not to interfere to such
an extent as would discord and
divide the people. We need Un
ited actions in our district, that the
strength may be preserved and the
voting powers be felt. We need
men of tenaciousness to represent ns
in the State and Notional conven
tions, not tricksters, not men who
are bribed to ride others iu
positions, not men who call up
the people for their individual ad
vancement, not men wlm are only’
known on Presidential years, not
men that desert the fields while the
conflict is raging, but pure men
are needed. Men unbridled or
governed by bosses, men who the
people call to represent them and
their political welfare, men who
have the interest of (he people at all
times to hear*, men who will stand
firmer in the lierciost of the battle
for the cause or right, such men we
must have or the cause must suffer I
i loss. We have just a few months!
more in which to do the great work 1
now before us and Unless immedi
ate action be taken, it will be im
perfectly dune, if done at all. Let
all the counties of the first district
see to it at once, and bestir in time.
Yours,
A. Wilson
