Tom Cassidy was found guilty of the
murder of George Smith, and was sent
enced to imprisonment for life by rec
ommendation of the jury. His counsel
has made a motion tor a new trial.

R. R, Ricks a typo connected with
the Morning iVews, was brutally assault
ed on Sunday night when near his
home, by two white men. The assail
ants were arrested and no doubt will get
the merited punishment.

resentation and billingsgate are not the
weapons to be used by colored newspa
pers, Whenver these weapons are used
against us, we respectfully beg to be
excused. None but cowards resort to

ipg the State Convention. We will
publish full proceedings of the meeting
next week.
I Mass meetings will soon be in order
in the several militia districts in this
county. The '-boys are only awaiting
the order< of the county committee,
which will be issued as soon as the
State Central Committee decides the
time for holding the State convention.

year each to the penitentiary on Mon
day last, The former was charged with
stealing several article of cheap clothing
and the latter with stealing 84 80.
Col. J. H. Deveaux has received the
commissions of Lieutenants R H Sim
mons, J E DeLester and J Myrell of
the Union Lincoln Guards.
Hon Fred Douglas has been invited
by Sumner Literary of Augusta to ad
dress them on the 7. proximo. It is
not known wheth r the gentleman \ ill
accept or not.
