apprentices of Past and Present Days.
The Carriage Monthly thua contrasts
the apprentice of former times to those
of the present:
Apprentices as the present generation
are ignorant of the hardships and mis
fortunes of the boys in by-gone days.
The latter were members of the master’s
family, boarding and sleeping with
them. Part of his business was to mind
the children, if there was any, run all
the errands for the household and shop
from 5 o’clock in the morning until 7
in the evening, and sometimes even*
later than that. Many of the boys of
the present day do not believe this, but it
is nevertheless true. The boy had to stay
as long as the agreement made called for,
and if he ran away he was considered an
outcast. If the parents of the boy
could raise a certain sum, the term of
apprenticeship was shortened accord
ing to the amount of money paid. In
time these boys became good mechanics,
obtaining a thorough knowledge of their
trade.
The apprentice of to-day is consid
ered equal in standing with the mechan
ic. He commences work at 7 o’clock
in the morning and quits at 6 in the even
ing, in some cases earlier, and is never
kept over his regular time. The em
ployer treats him the same as he does
his workmen, sometimes better, and he
is paid either by agreement or what he
is worth. There are many who still
would like to see the old apprenticeship
system of fifty years ago in force again.
Students Earn Money at Yale.
Tho favorite method of paying for
board by poor students at Yale College
is to organize an eating club. The pro
cess is simple. At the beginning of the
year a rnan goes around among his class
mates and secures eight or ten who agree
to take their meals together. lie then
goes to some landlady and agrees to fur
'■ nish her with an eatingclub of students.
He agrees furthermore to relieve her
from all pecuniary responsibility by col
lecting at the end of each week from the
men the money for their board and
handing it over to her. In return for
this she agrees to furnish him with his
board. It is beneficial to the student
because tho members of the club, know
ing that hr is in straightened circum
stanced, are always willing to help him
by paying regularly and promptly.
Every class has in it four or five moni
tors, whose duty it is to record the ab
Bence or tardiness of students at recita
tions or morning prayers. A monitor
receives $35 a year from the faculty.
The same amount is paid each year tc
the man who rings the college bell.

War Balloons.
Balloons destined for the Italian army
in Africa were tried recently in the pres
ence of several french and foreign offi
cers and aeronauts. One is to be used at
night, and carries a lamp equal to seventy
candles in power. Each balloon, with
its appurtenances, is coiled up in a box
and placed in a four-wheeled vehicle, at
the back of which is a pulley which lets
out the cable and acts as an anchor.
The cables are interlaced with wires,
which enable telephonic and telegraphic
communication to be kept up with the
aeronauts.
