SATURDAY JUNE 23, 1888
HoN. Fred Douglas said in a
Speech on Wednesday lust before
the Chicago convention “To say
that there is no difference bet ween
the Democratic and Republican par
ties in respect to my race, is a liar.”
Amen.
Mrs. Sarah Storey, mother of
Bishop H. M. Turner, died iu Wash
ingtOn D. C. Thursday last.
I
Col. Rufus E. Lester has been
nominated by the Democrats for
Congress. Can the Republicans
name a man who is able to take the
- “rtg of the bush.”
Col. John H. Dbveaux, business
manager of the Tribune, is in at
tendance on the Chicago Conven
tion as one oi the delegates.
The Democrats ot Savannah
manifest keen interest in the pro
ceeding of the Republican National
convention. Their interest though
Will turn to melancholy later in the
season.
The platform of the Republican
party is sound and outspoken in
in every measure that effects the
interest of our common country; ag
gressive and outspoken for protec
tion to American labor, and Amer
ican industries and boldly demand
a free ballot and a fair count in the
South; favoring a reduction ot the
surplus in the treasury by liberal
appropriations for internal improve*
v -monte, such as new public buildings
herbor and river improvements &c.
With such a platform, a bold and
vigorous canvas, success certainly
1 will be attained. There are thous
ands of prominent white men in tins
city who endorses the views adopt
ed by the Chicago convention, will
they have the manhood to cast the r
votes to sustain them, or will they
allow the proscription policy of the
Democracy to deprive them ot vot
ing for such measures as will inure
to ihe benefit and interest of our
common welfare.
Complaint is being made—and
nc doubt justly too—about the
small number of names that are
pl ced in the box from which the
Grand Juries are drawn. It is
I claimed that only 206 names are
j therein placed and from that num
ber we are yet to learn of a colored
man's name being drawn. Among
the 206 names are any one colored.
It not, why is this distinction made?
, Cannot those whose duty it is to
■ draw these juries find among our
i large pupulation upright and intel
• ligent colored men who are capable
f of performing the duties of grand
jurors. This is a serious question,
' whether colored men are kept off
I intentionally or not and if it is so, it
is evident that the Negro will not
■ receive equal justice before the law.

the manliness to make a decent
apology. He is a little too uppity
and biggity for us common folks.

around and snuffing the air for trea

of Thurman. Mrs. Arp has said
all the time that the Northern Dem
ocrats were no better at heart than
the Northern Republican* and she
sticks to it. It is not a man’s poli
tics that makes him a gentleman.
In fact the Republican? of the North
represent (he wealth and refinement
of their people. They constitute
the best society. The Democratic
Party of the North has got over 75
per cent of all the ragtag and bob
tail element in it—all the scurf of
of immigration that lands at the
Battery. It is a pity that Ben Hill
could not have carried out his wish
es as expressed in the Crittenden
letter, and made up a new parly,
composed of the better class of
Northern Republicans and Southern
Democrats. South a party would
have smothered the anarchists at
the birth, and established our insti
tutions and made our liberties more
secure. I like these Northern Re
publicans who are coining down
here to mingle with ns. They are
shrewd and practical, and they are
gentlemen. 1 have met a dozen
or so lately who are looking round
for investments, and 1 like them. 1
dined with a couple yesterday, and
sat right between them, and got as
much dinner as 1 wanted. —Bill Arp.
