I. REPUBLICAN NATIONAL TICKET.
FOR PRESIDENT !
GEN. BENJAMIN HARRISON,
Os Indiana.
FOR VICE-PRESIDENT :
HON. LEVI F. MORTON,
Os New York.
Atlanta Republican politicians
are very anxious to have a full State
! ticket.
The Republicans of Telfair coun
ty have nominated Samuel Graham
* (colored) for the Legislature.
What has become of the reform
’ association of Macon? We hope it
has nut gone into its hole already.
Old man Jeff’ Long should whoop
them up.
Our old friend Johnnie Marlow
• 4 thinkji he will be alright if the Re
publicans succeed m November
next, because as lie says Mrs. Har
rison look- so much like “old Miss
es’’.
! ’ The Tribune welcomes to its san
", ctum ‘‘Tie State Capital” publish
ed by E- M. Shakespeare at Talla
hassee in the interest of the colored
people of middle Florida. The Cap
*' itol is bright and newsey and deser-
• ves the support of the colored peo
ple of the "land of flowers”.
I \ It is something to reflect upon
& \ \at in sixteen* States in which a
■* free ballot and a fair count is alleg
ed to prevail, not a single electoral
vote can be cast for Harrrison as
against Cleveland, notwithstanding
the tact that the colored people,
v»ho are in the majority in a num
ber of these States, are Republicans
at heart and from principle.— Com
mercial Gazette,
A Deputy Sheriff named Loring
. in Palatka, Fla., has lost his lite by
his want of judgement. It seems
that he entered the jail for the pur
pose of beating a prisoner with a
stick, when he was remonstrated
[ with by James Alston, another pris
1 oner when Im turned to strike the
s latter with the stick, but Alston
I snatched the stick away when L. r
ing drew bis pistol and a scuflle en
sued; , in the struggle Alston suc
ceed in keeping the pistol pointed
away from oim, and it was in the
struggle and excitement that it was
discharged striking Loring in the
, abdomen from the effects of which
he died. Some of the dead man’s
; friends have made an effort to lynch
Alston, but the colored people have
watched the jail and will insist on
the law taking its course, and have
thus far kept the lynchers at bay.
Congressman Vance, (Dem.) of
Connecticut, fears the Republicans
i will carry the State on the tariff is
! sue. He says: ‘‘lt is only necessa
ry for the Republicans to secure
t nineteen more votes in order to car
ry the election. Fifteen of these
they expect to get in Indiana, and
six from Connecticut, and that car
[ ries the day. Now the question to
' my mind is, can this be prevented?
As to Indiana. I only know what is
I told me by the Indiana Democrats.
They do not even pretend to say
that they have any surety of a suc
cessful issue in that State, but on
the contrary are very much alarm
ed about the outcome. This being
the case, it becomes absolutely ne
cessary for us to carry Connecticut,
it will make no difference what
kind of a majority New York gives
Cleveland, it will make no differ- (
ence how New Jersey will go; with
out we carry Connecticut Harrison
will be elected. h
EMANCIPATION IN BRAZIL.
The Brazilian Parliament has ap
proved the government bill com
pletely abolishing slavery, and it
has been sanctioned by the Regent,
the Princess Imperial. Isabella.
The decree liberating every remain
ing slave meet with general approv
al North and South; and when the
poet Whit ier heard of it, he sent
the following dispatch to the Em
peror Dorn Pedro, at Milan: ‘With
thanks to. God, who has bless“d
your generous efforts. 1 congratulate
you on the peaceful abolition of
slavery in Brazil. John G. Whit
tier.” The Emperor, who is per
sonally acquainted with the poet,
caused a reply of thanks to be cabl
ed. Viscomte Nivaca, whois in at<-
tendance on Dorn Pedro, sent the
dispatch, also alluding to the criti
cal state of the Etnporor’s health.
The end of emancipation is one of
promise for all classes in Brazil, and
it is certainly a splendid result
which secures absolute freedom to
the slaves without sectional war and
without entailing great loss upon
the agricultural classes. —Demorest’s
Magazine.
I)ISTRIOT CON 1 r ENTION.
The Republican Committee of the
First. Congressional District, Capt.
L. M. Pleasant, Chairman, and L.
B. ToOrner acting Secretary, met on
Wednesd <y last and resolved to held
a convention in Savannah on Wed
nesday August 22 at 12 o’clock in,
at Umpire hall. The object of the
convention is to nominate a candi
date for Congress and to select a
candidate for Congress and to select
a District Elector for the National
ticket.
The Southern Leader of Jackson
ville is opposed to tho Republicans
putting out a State ticket on ac
count of tHe outrageous registra
tion law and the irapossiblity of se
curing a fair election and an honest
account, as the Democrats are de
termined to count themselves in no
matter if the Republicans majority
should be 500 or 5000. The lead
er concludes by saving
“The best thing that the Republicans can
<Io is to meet at Ocala, make no nominations
for State officers, but pass resolutions protest*
ing against the operation of the registration,
law which is a huge machinery for disfran
chising the .colored "Republicans in this
State.“
#
Democrats all over the country
are still coming over to the Repub
licans as is shown by the following
taken from the New York Press of
the 28th ult.:
The East Side Harrison and Morton Club
composed entirely of Hebrews, held a rotis
inir meeting last night at American Star
Hal', IGS East Broadway. Alexander S
Rosenthal the chairman after a short speech
presented General Samuel J. C.<>oks, who,
he said, had been a lifelong Democrat, as the
first speaker of the evering.
General Crooks said, -‘This is the first
time in my life that I have addressed an as.
semblage of Republicans and 1 may say in
telligent men. I have hitherto h. en identifi
ed with the mudsills of the Norm, wi h the
t 41 end or the commoners of the Democrat
ic pirty. as you know the ari-tocrats of that
p,i ty are all in the S >uth Heretofore when
the aristocrats, the Bourbons of that partv,
sneezed i i the S uth, I have been taken with
a sudden cold here in the No’th, But now
1 have cut that party, and I am not the only
Democrat that has done so as Mr. Cleveland
will find out and joined issues with the par
ty that I am convinced represents not the
lost cause but the truest American idea I
take sides with the partv that has produced
the greatest man who now lives and tbit
party is the Republican party. They have
produced that man who believe* in this
country and in this country .dona. And
that man’s name is Blaine. Wild and pro
longed applause.) In him I believe and in
the doctoriiiv that American industries pro
tected bv a high tariff on pan per'made for
eign goods is for the best interest of our
workman.
It it is waving the bloody shirt to say that
Grover Cleveland is not loyal to the Union
then I wave it becau-e I «av to von that he
is not loyal and never was loyal and further
more he has never appointed a loyal man to
an office of importance since he was elected
President, I tell you that the soldiers will
have none of him and in the words of the
immortal Andrew Jackson who was a high
protective tariff Democrat, -by |the eternal
they will not vote for him, Good night.’'
