Miss Lucy E. Brown, who has been

The Republicans met in convention
i few weeks ago at Louisville for
the purpose of nominating candi
dates for the Legislature. The con
vention Was called to order by W.
M. McCloud and El, M, Williams
was called to the chair. I never
saw people so much interested in
putting a man in the field in iny
life. F. T. 'Villiams and VV. M,
McCloud were nominated as candi
dates for the Legislature. We also
ratified the action o| the Chicago
convention in nominating Harrison
and Morton for President and Vice
President. On the 6th of October
we will show ourselves men of intel
ligence by acting wise in voting for
our men.

Col. J. W, Thompson, editor of the
Peoples' Journal, at Jacksonvills, Fla.,
arrived iu tie ci’y a few days ago, and
will make Savannah bis headquarters
until he can go back to Jacksonville,
(owing to the yellow fever.) Col.
Thompson hns been spending the sum
mer at Warm Spriugs Ga. In hopes of
regaining his health, but he still suffers
from the injuries sustained at the Hur
ricane Creek trestle, near Blackshear on
17th of last March. He says that Dr.
Duncan will take a piece of dead bone,
from his arm when the weather gets
cool, then he will—if he is strong
enough—commence to handle stock and
bonds.
The Republicans of the fijst militia
district met on last Wednesday evening
at Odd Fellows hall, Dully street, and
confirmed the resolutions adopted at its
previous meeting, condemnatory of the
killing of Burke and Devantz, and the
verdict tendered in those cases. Several
speeches were made urging prompt and
united action in the matter. The con
mittee of fifteen which was appointed
the meeting previous to raise means to
aid in the prosecution has appointed a
sub committee of three to act in the mat
-er, The meeting was largely attended
and will meet regularly every Wednes
day nights, the next meeting being at
Chatham new hall
Mr. Frank W. Willis, a prominent
barber of Augusta, in a shaving and
hair cutting contest recently held in
that city, shaved and cut the hair of a
customer in the short time of eight min
utes. Mr. Willis take* the cake certain
ly, so far as some of our city barbers
are concerned.
Mr. F. 11. Haar, the popular voting
grocer corner Bolton and West Broad

new store and dwelling corner West
Broad and Gwinnett streets, and will
shortly open with a fresh stock of
fine groceries, wines, liquors and se
gars, .
Michael Lavin one of our oldest and
highly esteemed citizens I'*d at his
residence in this city on Wednesday
last. Mr. Lavin was in the 63rd year
of his age, and served as alderman for a
number of years. He was highly re
spected bv all who knew him as a man
ot strict business integrity.
Mr. Lewis Whiteman on last. Friday,
while 'oading a ear with r sin at the
SF& WRy wharf,lost his balance and
fell from the car and it is thought broke
some of his ribs. He was taken to his
mother’s residence on Perry street lane,
near Reynolds.
