Grand Kesepfion to Bishop
Gaines.
Bishop W. J. Gaines. D. D. arrived
in our city last Saturday and was warm
ly greeted by his host of friends. On
M ednesday evening St Philips A M E

intelligent audience the otcassion being
a grand reception given to the Bishop.
The people were called to order by pre
siding elder J. A. Wm d, and prayer
offer dby Rev. Pinckney. A wel
come addreSs was read by Miss Lilia
Jones which received the plaudits ot the
gathering. Rev. J, B L Iton, pa«tor of
St. Philips, then introduced the Bishop
prefacing the introduction with a bi i f
sketch of the hitter s rise in the church,

cotton fieics and had rais d, by hard
study after his days Work, to the minis
try Commencing with a poor mission,
to circuit aod to stations, and eventual
ly to the Piesidency of Morris Brown
College and Bishop ot the sixth Epis
copal district embracing Georgia and
Alabama
The Bishop xpressed his high ap
preciation of die worm welcome he had
received in Savannah, and gave some
very wholesome advice to his he arers in
hi* usual forcible in J practical style.
Mr. G. S. Williams then delivered a
forcible address on the “Necessity of
an Educated Ministry” which was re
ceived wi h much applause. Brief ad
dresses were a.so delivered by Rev. R.
B Baih y, Col. J. H. Dev.mx and Rev
J. A. Wood. '1 he addresses were inter
spered by a well organized choir for
the occasion, with Miss Maria Gastm,
one of Savannah’s acc- mplished public
school teachers, at the organ.
The speaking being over Mr. James
F. Gillens stepped forward and in some
well chosen remarks presented the
Bishop with a handsome silver tilting
pi cher and goblet bearing the follow

The ladies then came forward in
large numbers and overwhelmed the
Bishop with beautiful bouquets’ chief
among which was a tastefully arranged
basket presented by Mrs. Georgia
Bradwell.-
The services at the church being
concluded the B shop and invited guests
were escorted to the rasidence of Mrs
Baker near by where a bountiful and
elegant collation was served.
The reception was all that it should

served regard and esteem in which
Bishop Gaines is held by the p.ople of
