Pullman Started Life with SSO.
I gleaned from George M. Pullman
in a pleasant interview that he was the
third son of a large family. His two eld
der brothers are distinguished ministers.
His mother was left a widow with five
children of tender age, and George, who
was twenty-two years old, without a
trade or profession. He had, however,
accumulated a small capital in the furni
ture business in Alcion, N. Y., which he
consumed in discharging the obligations
incurred by his father's illness, and he
was left with only SSO in the world to
struggle for their maintenance and edu
cation. Deeply imbued with the prin
ciples of probity derived from the exam
ple and instruction of his father, who
had been a mechanic and inventor, it
was not long before he got contracts to
raise buildings, made necessary by exca
vations for the Erie Canal, and his suc
cess brought him not only renumeration
but saved thousands to the State of New
York in lieu of paying damages to the
adjacent buildings, as the State had
been previously condemned to do.
About this time it was necessary to raise
the buildings in Chicago, and Mr. Pull
man saw a great opportunity for the ex
ercise of his skill and ability in accom
plishing that result. He moved to
Cnicago and contracted to raise large
brick buildings, which advanced his
prospects materially. Meanwhile, in
1858, his mind had been directed to the
necessity of a sleeping car, growing out
' of the fact that he had tried the bunk of
a car intended for that purpose on a trip
to Chicago. In 1859 he altered two cars
for the Chicago and Alton and converted
them into sleeping cars; but in 1864 he
built in a shed the “Pioneer,” which
cost him SIB,OOO. This car conveyed
the body of Lincoln to its place of rest,
and to enable it to pass over the road,
on account of its size, platforms and
other obstrutions had to bo altered to
conform to its safe passage.
A Desperate Boy. "
Ulysses Nelson, a flfteen-year old col
ored boy, gave a remarkable exhibition
of dare-devil pluck at Hastings, Neb.,
the other day. Nelson r ached Hastings
after midnight, preceded by a telegram
from Holdridge where he had stolen a
watch. As he stepped from the train
policemen Balcombe and Clark stopped
him and told him he was their prisoner.
Tho boy whipped out a revolver and
fired. Balcombe fell mortally wounded,
and the lad disappeared in the darkness.
Clark notified the Sheriff and Chief of
Police, and six men went to the depot
yards to hunt for Nelson. They found
him in a patch of weeds and told him to
surrender. He made no answer, and
Clark and another man walked into the
weeds. As they did so Nelson jumped
up and fired, sending a ball close to
Clark’s head, who ran. The boy fired
again, and this time the ball took off
one of Clark’s fingers, and was stopped
by his watch. Then the officers blazed
away at the woods until their ammuni
tion was gone, when Nelson sprang from
his hiding place with a revolver in each
hand, backed to where the officers had
tied their horses, mounted one, and rode
off. After getting ammunition and re
enforcements the officers followed the
boy, overtook him, and firedat him u n
til they killed his horse and he had no
ammunition left. Then he surrendered.
He had a fatal shot in the bac k of hio
tneck, received in the weeds.
The Decline oTtlie Nose.
Among the many startling disclosures
with which scientific investigation has
made us familiar, one of the most extrav
agant is the discovery according to
which the nose is said to be gradually
losing its power to discharge its tradi
tional function in the case of the civilized
peoples. When the sense of smell
vanishes altogether—as, it is affirmed,
will infallibly be the case one day—the
organ itself is bound to follow its ex
ample sooner or later. It is, no doubt,
a fact that the olfactory sense is much
keener in the savage than in the civilized
man, and it is reasonable to conclude
that the more we progress in civilization
the duller the sense will grow, and as
nature never preserves useless organs,
when the nose loses its power of smelling
tho nose “must go.”— London Iron.

To all such women we would say that one of
