TEEN-AGE DRIVERS
MOST RECKLESS
CHICAGO, 111. — Are teen-age
drivers, regardless of race or col¬
or, as reckless as older folks say
they are? The National Safety
Council, this week, says the an¬
swer is “yes.”
The 1948 edition of “Accident
Facts,” the Council’s statistical
year-book includes studies made of
accident rates of drivers in vari¬
ous age groups. These studies
show that the fatal accident rate
in terms of miles driven by young-
sters under 20 was 89 per cent
higher than the average rate for
all drivers.
The Council believes driver
training courses in high schools
and colleges are a big part of the
[ answer to the problem. Better ek-
am,,Its by parents and other ok}-
er driver* would help a lot too,jit
says.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 80, 1948
The judge added: “The evi-^
dence shows a great differen¬
tial between the pay of white
and Negro teachers in favor of
the former.”
The following average month¬
ly salaries were listed;
Elementary
Classification White ^ Ne| ro
High School Prin. $340 $240
Ele. Prin. $254.15 $167.53
H S. Teachers $198.45 $145.65
Ele. Teachers .$160.19. $112.38
The opinion said the average
years of education for white
teachers was 17.83, and that of
Negroes, 17.67.
fendants. The court only de¬
crees that the salaries may
not, when so fixed, be dis¬
criminatory of color or race.”
The judge said a declaratory
judgment and injunction in
accordance with his ruling
would be entered.
“The court realizes that a
readjustment of salaries will be
difficult task and will require
time and pat'ence so that the
injunctive relief .granted wlill
be stayed a reasonable time to
permit compliance by the de-
fendants,” Judge Underwood
said.
