Chesterfield Salutes Local Oesiers
In Planning '48 Christmas Campaign
"With a galaxy of famous personalities—Arthur Godfrey, Perry Como,
Jo Stafford and Peggy Lee-featured in its Christmas advertising, the
makers of Chesterfield cigarettes this Yuletide season, as always m the
past, will be saluting wholesale and retail dealers everywhere.

ments of Chesterfield 20s will be approximately 00 per cent Christmas
packing and 40 per cent regular packing. For the convenience of whole¬
salers and retailers in distinguishing between the two packings, each
shipping container of the gift cartons will be plainly printed "Christmas
Packing.”
"Always Bring Cheer, Always Bring Chesterfields,” is the theme of
the Christmas season’s message from the Company to all dealers and
their customers. In a bright and gayly decorated folder featuring Arthur
Godfrey as Santa Claus, a number of suggestions for retailers have
been prepared for the Yuletide season.
Emphasizing the Christina -stocking theme, Christmas shoppers are
urged to “Sock ’em with a Load of Good Cheer, with these Christmas
Extra Specials for smokers.” In Arthur Godfrey’s words, “Give ’em by
the carton. Give ’em to everyone who smokes—the family, the neighbors,
your friends-everyone who’s been good to you all year. . . . When you
give Chesterfields, you sock ’em with a load of good cheer.” By keeping
the attractive Chesterfield gift cartons on display, it is felt that retailers’
customers will be constantly reminded to Buy Them By The Carton.
For the Nation’s pipe smokers, a smartly attractive humidor Granger
canister will be put out that will "Keep pipe smokers happy as nothing
else can.” And for the smokers who alternate between their pipe and

NEW KIND OF
BABY BOTTLE
Wash ngton, D. C—A new
kind of baby bottle—collapsible
and disposable—which, accord¬
ing to its producers, will revo¬
lutionize infant feedin’g, was
announced today.
The new bottles — called
Shellies—are a radical depar¬
ture from the rigid glass bee¬
tles which have been standard
equipment with mothers and
in hfospitals for more tuan 8J
years.
Described by their inventor,
a Washington, D. C., registered
nurse, as “the nearest approach
to breast feeding,” Shellies
have a number of apparent ad¬
vantages for both mother and
baby. For mother, there are no
bottles to brush, scrub and
sterilize, because Shellies are
pre-sterllized, are used once
and then thrown away.
For baby, file fact that the
new bottles are collapsible
means an end to fighting back
pressure or partial vacum, an
end to collapsed nippies,, and
an end to a:r-swallcwmg. With
Shellies, baby needs only be
“burped” once, at the end of
the feeding. No more hard,
heavy, breakable bottles to
cause possible injury, eith.r,
because Shellies are made of
soft, pliable, yet strong “Shel-
lene,’’ a new plastic material.
The new bottles have a psy¬
chological advantage, too. Soft
and warm when filled with
heated formula, they give the
baby a feeling of security and
comfort, which, pediatricians
and psychiatrists say, is im¬
portant in early infancy.
Shellies come in a long roll-
each bottle sealed off from the
next in line. The bottles — in
either four or eight-ounce size
—are snipped from the roil
with scissors, filled with for¬
mula, fitted with sterile nip¬
ples, and placed in the refrig¬
erator. Before nursing, the air
is squeezed out of the pliable
bottles so that baby gets his
formula completely free of air
Easy to assemble, Shellies
are equipped with plastic caps
which insure the sterility of
the nipple and at the same
time render the whole bottle
leakproof. Tney can be drop¬
ped on a hard surface without
breaking and can be carried
loose in a handbag or suitcase
without danger of leakage or
contamination.
Another advantage of the
n* w bottles is that they are
much easier to heat than glass
bottles. Filled with formula
or milk, they can be brought
to body temperature in one
minute by simply holding them
under a hot water tap.
Onellies were invented by a
registered nurse, Adda May Al¬
len, of The Plains, Va. Mrs.
Allen-, long experienced in in¬
fant nurseries, conceived the

tic reception. Leading pediat-
ricans who have seen it—some
of them have used it with their
patients— highly approve ol
the idea of closely approximat¬
ing breast feeding.

come in rolls of sixty-five and
one hundred, will cost aboui
one cent each. Bottles for a
normal day—six feedings, will
cost slightly more than a nic¬
kel.
DEEP RIVER BOYS
SCORE AGAIN
In ihe annual New York uni¬
versity poll conducted among
7,804 school of commerce stu¬
dents, the Deep River Boys, fa¬
mous RCA-Victor vocal stars,
won titular honors as ‘‘the most
popular singing group of 1948,”
gaining 4,170 of the total votes
cast, due mainly to their re¬
cently released recording of
“Recess ir, Heaven,” currently
among the ‘most played,’ Imost
listened to’ records lsted in
music business trade journals.
In a ceremony scheduled for
the Starlight Room of the fam¬
ed Waldorf-Astoria hotel, New
York city, on November 26,
Leon Eskridge, Jr., newly elect¬
ed Student Council president,
first Negro to win- that post,
will present the symbcl c plaque
to the Deep River Boys, signi¬
fying their s? lection, by the
student body, as “the most pop¬
ular singing group of 19<8.”
New York’s Mayor William
