Georgia Baptists Hold
Annual
Brunswick, Ga.—The Gener-
a! Missionary Baptist Sunday
School and Training Union Con-
vention of Georgia concluded
its annual session here last
week. This city was the scene
cf the gathering of young Bap-
tists from every corner of the
slate.
The Memorial services were
conducted by Rev. O. H.
son of Griffin and Rev. S. M.
Davie of Atlanta. An
for the state program was
made by Rev. J. M. Benton of
Pavannah and President O. J.
Moore of the Bryant Seminary.
Dr. L. M. Terrill represented the
Parent body for the ailing Dr.
I. A. Pinkston, president of the
State body. The afternoon
and mornings were given over
to departmental work, and all
departments were well attend-
ed and showed much enthusi-
asm.
Addresses were presented by
Rev. L. L. Jones of Cuthbert
and Mrs. M. C. Daw r son of
Warrenton. Rev. W. C. Smith
of Atlanta preached the con¬
vention sermon.. Rev. Julius
Hope, entertaining pastor of
Zion Baptist church, took over
the welcome phase of the pro-
gram. Greetings were extend-
ed by the representatives of
business and churches in and
around the city of
Wednesday morning the Rev.
C. M. Alexander charmed the
congregation with it.. a message,
“The Image of God ” Mrs. H.
S. Dixon. Georgia’s Teacher of
the year for 1957-58,” brought
a forceful address centered on
the problems of
Mrs. L. M Terrell represented
President Weatherspool of the
Women’s Convention. The sto-
ry hopr groun made a beautiful
showing. One of the female
singing groups of Savannah in¬
troduced a number of songs
composed by Mrs. H. M. Butler 1
who was piansit for the occa-
sion. The Macedonia Baptist
church choir of Valdosta gavej
two numbers, and President J.

church, Golden street, West Sa¬
vannah announces the following
Sunday schedule: 10 a. m. Sun¬
day School with Supt. W. C.
Ross, presiding: 2 p. m. Holy
communion' service, the senior
choir and No. 2 choir will ren¬
der music; 8 p. m. preaching
by the pastor, Rev. T. J.
Wright and the junior choir
rendering the music..

Women’s day was observed
last Sunday at True Love Bap¬
tist church. Rev. F. Bonds, pas¬
tor. Mrs. Millie West was in
charge of the Sunday School.
At 11 .a. m. Mrs. Elizabeth N.
Jones spoke on “Christian Wo¬
men of Today” and she was in¬
troduced by Mrs. Welma Wright.
At 3:30 p. m. Mrs. Julia Samp¬
son Hall spoke on “Woman,
God’s Gift To Man.” She'was
introduced bv Mrs. Faustine
Bignon. BTU was held at the
usual hour. Sunday, August 1
2 at 3:30 p. m. holy communion
will be observed.

Abraham Sheppard Asst. Su¬
perintendent was in charge of
the Sunday School at Mt. Her¬
mon Baptist church last Sun¬
day. At the 11 o'clock service
the officers were in charge. Re¬
marks were made by Rev. C
Brantley. Sunday night, a
battle cf songs between the
Southern Sons and the Melo-
tone Gospel Singers was featur¬
ed.
Choir rehearsal will be held
at 8 o’clock Friday night. Com¬
munion services are planned for!

L. Lomax of the Training Union
Convention was presented by
President E, O. S. Cleveland of
the S. S. Convention. Presi-
det Lomax reviewed the work
of the Convention and deliver-
ed a stirring address on the
Demands of Stewardship in the
i Christian Life.
The evening meetings were
featured by the Junior Conven-
ti° n contests, the Intermediate
oratorical contest and the
Youth Rai; y- These were un-
der the direction of Mrs.E . F.
Bignon, Savannah; Prof. J. P.
Billups. Athens, and Mrs. L. L.
Ison of Monroe. Shiloh, Bruns-
wick was ithe winner in the
Junior department; Zion Hill,
Atlanta was the winner in the
Intermediate Oratorical, and
First Church, Bainbridge won
* he “Miss Training Union of
1959” title. The highlight of
the Youth Rally was the ad-
dress by Dr w H Dennis, pres¬
ident of the Albany State Col¬
lege.
Thursday the convention was
thrilled with the messages of
Mrs. Esther Smith of the For-
eign Mission Board, and the
Rev. J. C. Simmons of Ft. Val-
ley. Preceeding President
Cleveland’s address, he present-
ed Mrs. Madie Scott of States-
boro who spoke fervently on
the subject ‘‘Baptist Loyalty to
the Word of God.” President
Cleveland was then presented
by President Lomax, and Dr.
Cleveland lifted the conven-
tion with his message.

will be presented Sunday in a
program at First Mt. Sinai Bap¬
tist church by Choir N'o. 1. Rev.
J. J. Ewing is pastor of the
church. Rev. J. M. Nelson de¬
livered the message at the even¬
ing service last Sunday.
St. Mary’s AME Church
At St. Mary’s AME church,
the ground breaking took place
at 4 p. m. Sunday, July 26, with
Presiding Elder J. P. Lampkin
as master of ceremony. On
program were Rev. I. Lexing¬
ton, Rev. C. S. Stripling, Rev.
E. G. Barnnett and Rev. B. C.
Carswell. Rev. F. D. Jaudon
delivered the message. The
first shovel of dirt was broken
by Rev. F. D. Jaudon, followed
by the pastor, Rev. Charlie Fo¬
gle and J. Moultrie.

28 at Mt. Zion Baptist church
with Rev. J. Q. Adams, ofifei-
ating. Mrs. Patton died Fri-
day, July 24, at a local hospi¬
tal .after several weeks’ illness.
Interment was in Laurel Grove
cemetery and Sidney A. Jones

named to the newly created
Woman’s Board of the Catho¬
lic Counell of Chicago.
The board members will as¬
the Council with fund
raising activities, membership
solicitation, public relations
events, and inter-agency coop¬
eration.) Members of the
board will .also fulfill speaking
engagements and participate
an intensive program of
education so that they can se¬
cure a full grasp of the city’s
complex human relations prob¬
lems.
The newly-elected board
members include Mrs.
Webb Sexton, president; Mrs.
Lon O'Connor, and Mrs. Clif¬
ford J. Campbell, vice presidents;
Mrs. J. Goodsell Jacobs, corre¬
sponding secretary, and Mrs.
Revert Cronin, recording secre¬
tary.
Mrs. Sexton, in her first ac¬
tion as president, appointed
following women as
chairmen: Mrs. Josephine Robi-
chaux, Jr., chairman, 1959 Com¬
munion Mass and Breakfast,
and Mrs. Joanne D. Dago, chair-
man, membership committee.
The board’s first major pro-
ject will be the sponsorship of
the Council’s Communion
Breakfast October 25. Holy
Mass will be celebrated in the
Grand Ballroom of the Sher¬
aton hotel.
The Catholic Interracial Coun¬
cil Is a layman's organization
operating under the direction of
Archbishop Gregory Meyer. It
seeks to combat racial discrim¬
ination and prejudice by work¬
ing for:
1. Economic equality by se¬
curing full employment oppor¬
tunities for all.
2. Complete .cultural devel¬
opment by securing full access
for all the health, educational,
and recreational facilities.
3. Political equality, by In¬
suring suffrage for all.
4. Integration in housing
and neighborhoods as the ne¬
cessary condition to secure ad¬
equate housing for minority
groups, and healthy communi-
ty life for all the people of our
metropolitan area.
