A CARD.
M». Kotroa. A short and flattering noticejin
your paper a few days since, suggesting tuy
name as a candidate to represent this county
in the next Legislature, has induced many of
my fellow-citizens to inquire of me; "are you
a candidate?"
These enquiries arc so frequent that I feel
that it will not be in bad taste or out of placo,
that I should at once announce to my fellow-
citjzenstho position which I must be consider
ed a* occupying-
.Withor my interest nor inclinations direct
me to public life, but at this time, as for the
last four years, 1 const ler that the services of
every good citizen are at the disposition of the
people.
Georgia in the late revolution lost all but her
Imnot and her natural resources. .She must
pre.-ervo tho former and develop tlte latter, to
do this. It;dut-try must be fostered and
protected, idlcncsi condemned and punished,
security must be given to person and property.
In tho transition state of a large cla-s of our
population, a Herculean task rests upon tho
next Legislature ; laws must he so trained as to
deter from idleness and vice a class of labor
ers whoso woll.directed industry has been, and
may continue to be, lho source of agricultural
wealth and mechanical and commercial pros
perity.
If my fellow-citizens think that J can aid in
promoting those results, and 1 am returuod to
the Legislature. 1 will servo thorn faithfully
and fearlessly. II, however, some other person
should be their choice, 1 do uut wish that tuy
name should be used to inako an exciting can
vass Where the interest ol each is tho inter
est o r uU as it is in this crisis, harmony should
be preserved, and tho representative, whoevor
he may be, should fool that ho is in fact tho
untrammelled J choice of the voters, and^that

without disparaging tho claims of others, wo

I)E,
Brazil.—Our readers will oLsorvo in our
advertising columns the notice of Major
Hastings to tho Pioneer Colony of emi
grants to Brazil, being organized by him.
As that part of tho public that reads after
us, know, we are opposed to tho policy of
Southern emigration. We need not ro-
pcat the reasons. They were given in n
letter from General Wade Hampton, of
South Carolina, to a friend asking hit. ad
vice on tho subject, so fully and so point
edly that there is nothing left to ho added.
We are glad to know that tho Southern
people generally are acting upon them,
and have made up their minds to stay at
home and stand by tho South in its trials
and misfortunes. Hut wo have no dispo
sition to quarrel with or throw obstacles
in the way of those who aro of a different
opinion. It is a feeling of honorable pride, j ~~~ (
though as we think a mistaken one, that
prompts them to fly from radical social
and political changes which they believe
will bo disastrous to the coil Mr j% and
certainly are hostile to all their former
habits and tastes.
Major Hastings experts to make the
experiment with quite a large pioneer
colony, and its experience, will test the
question of tho wisdom of the movement.
If the colony succeeds in establishing
itself, i s influence in turning the trade | inc,lt ' sta, " , .

from tho Amazon river in this direction
must ho felt. Liuut. Maury lias shown
that a leaf thrown into the ocean oil* that
coast, will bo borno by its currents into
the Gulf of Mexico, thereby indicating
that us the natural course of trade. Tho
colonists have secured, wo understand,
important pi ivilegon under the Imperial
Government, such a< grants of land and
immunity from military service for n
series of years. Tho climate and soil aro
both inviting to tho Southern emigrant,
tiio tirst being mild and agreeable and the
latter adapted to productions Jumiliur to
our people.
While doubting the general policy, we
cannot but wish the explorers every good
fortune and success in their exodus. Tho
expedition is expected to sail about the
first of December next.
Yesterday and IIn'caJ'ter % was very
unlike any day thut iiad preceded it for
some months. It was clear, bracing, de
lightful, in its atmospheric department,
notwithstanding its groundwork was quite
damp, and in places muddy. By reason
of sundry light rains hero, and at points
above this, our river made another “run
upon her banks” and presented herself at
the wharf in sufficient fullness to safely
rccoivo upon her swelling bosom any
burden that tbo necessities or pleasures ol
man might choose to impose upon her.
She whs not permitted long to "sport,
unplowud,” in her growing greatness—for
tho old Marianna, and the stirring little
Uehco, wore roon moving like "things of
life,” with keels sunk deep beneath their
high tiers of cotton bales that adornod
their decks. Wo trust they will make
quick and successful trips to Apalachicola.
Heavy supplies for this market aro await
ing below for transportation. Thoso sup
plies aro looked for with equal anxiety by
our merchants and their customers.
Our living hero will bo greatly improved
by a direct water communication with the
Gulf. All tho tropical fruits /.an then
reach us. Tho fish, both shelled and mi-
sbelled, of tho great Gulf and its estua
ries, can bo bad by our people. The
colebratod St. Anthony's Hay oysters will
doubtless come up us of old, and "mix
their liquor” with our “condiments.”
Some enterprising friend might send ns
a barrel or two—or threo—or upwards.
Why not? Our friend John Black, whoso
modesty keeps him “pegging away’ at
tho hopeless task of upholding the impor
tance of Eufaula, got one barrel, and why
may wo not expect u do:en, a* wo are
not modest ?
