bears such li'.llc resemblance in liunarnenl
or spirit to the raco from which it bad
claimed origin, that wo did hope it would
be disowned and repudiated in this sec
tion.
Though our own course in reference to
teoeasion can have no important relation
to the questions at issue, wo have no ob*
jection to its free "ventilation.” Wo op
posed secession until Georgia had taken
the step which no conduct of ours could
possibly cause her to retrace. It involved
her in a war with ibo Federal authority
and the Northern States, and we gave our
feeble support to our own State, first in
her independent position, and afterwards
In the new political association to which
she attached herself. It will require Mr.
Aahburn’s very atrongeat "didactic rea
soning" to convince us that in taking this
course, with the Constitution of Georgia
as it then was, and with the then prevalent
and generally predominant Mean of the
priority of State aliegiaru: , vso did not
act as patriotism and a duo regard fur the
peace of society demanded. Mr. Ash-
burn chose to act otherwise after seces
sion bad been accouiplinhcd, and he has
already laid before the pub.ic proofs oi
the bad feeling, lawless hct> and rankling
animosities thereby occasioned. Thai thi*
feeling is still cherished on his part is also
■ufllciently apparent, if not distinctly
avowed, and thus society is still troubled
by the consequences of a course of his
that resulted in no benefit whatever, so
far as wo are advised, to either party to
the struggle. Failing to prevent secession,
we sided with thu $tulo in the conflict
which ensued; and the State having failed
to sustain herself in tier war w ith the Na
tional authority, we nuw acquiesce in the
bloody arbitrament and are doing all that
we can to harmonize the lately contend
ing sections and restore stability and fra
ternity in accordance with the plan ot the
President, to pour oil on thu troubled
waters of strife, and to bury in oblivion
the animosities ot thu past, llut Mr. Ash-
bum cherishes a spirit that wilt not
"down" at. thu bidding of thu President
or the appeals ol a people bulging to be
restored to their original relations with the
General Government and all Us section*;
be will not "let by-gone* bo by-gone*";
be rakes in the ashes of Dio past for om-
bars with which to light again the torch of
political animosity and "Urn tho heart” of
both section* to net* of continued strife
and discord; ho qiifsIionH the expediency
of the President’s cleinoney, and suggests
with evidout satisfaction tho propriety of
* revocation of pardons already granted 1
Not content with this, he wiitet Vo North
ern papers, to bo apruud before thu people
of the North, statements concerning the
feelings of our people and Iboir intended
political action that we have shown to bn
wholly unsustained by "the record.” (It
he did not write them himself, he justi
fies, endorses and defends them, which
amounte to the saino thing.) We are
willing to lei even the tribunal to which
he has appealed, the Evening Voai and tho
aentiment which it represents, decide
which has pursued tho in,,hi patriutic
course—the course best calculated to mill-
(■te the bloody strife while It lusted, end
to harmonize end fraternize the people of
ell lections et its close—Mr. Ashburri or
ourself.
Our remerk shout the "gloomy situs-
lion" wes that if "Simper 1 hud beerd such
remarks made by the poople of the South
es he communioetrd to the Kvening font,
they were oxcu.uhle in those who woro
•merliug under the disappointment* end
weighed down by the gloomy foreboding,
of their present situation; and we showed
that they did not represent the cool
raenl of the great body of the people, by
referring to what tho Convention bed ao
tually dune.
But Mr. Ashburn says Hint the Con von
tiou, in simply repealing the ordinance nf
teceesion, recognized the right of seces
sion as a constitutional rigid. There might
be force in this deduction if the Conven
tion bad not gone further. Hut, as we
have already said, the Convention not
only struck from the Conslitulioii those
clauses from which this rigid might have
been claimed as expressly reserved, hut it
adopted in lieu thereof a section distinctly
and solemnly recognizing the Constitu
tion of the TJ nited Slates as the paramount I
law of the land, and allegiance to the I
Kedoral Government ns the llrst duly of
the people of Ueorgia. Could » more era-
phatic and unequivocal abandonment of
the doctrine of recession hnve possibly
been proclaimed • Would thu declaration
that the act of secession was null and void
hava been more complete ? At all events,
U there such a difference in practical re
sult between the two declarations, as to
require that the Slalo should take the
plunge Into thu condition of anarchy and
almost luestricabla confusion that would
follow the annulment nf every act of le
gislation since 1800? Surely, even the
spirit of old John Brown, niter “march
ing on" to the connunniutien of nil its
hopes, could not wish to visit such a pun
ishment upon the people of llie South,
whore no practical end could bn secured
it. So far from this amendment of the
Plata Constitution harmonizing the action
of the Convention of lsiiS with that of
1881, It utterly pula it out of tho power of
any future Convention to Uko the course
pursued by the Convention of 'OL It ex-

Tho tibg slaughtering and pork packing

Tho receipts thus far this season have

total receipts of hogs for packing at Cin

prevailing rate for heavy woight is 11 a

seeing but dim prospects ahead (or a ro

rate* for hogs.
The farmers in this section, like tho
packors, are holding oil* as in tl.o mean
time, even if prices should decline 1 u 2o i \\

they will more than realize the difference j
in the increased weight and improved
condition of the moat. At tho present
rate of corn in the country, tho farmer in
30 days, or about the 20th of December,
the best season for packing, would gain
an average of JO pounds on each hog fed
in pen. At present feeders are still sub
sisting the bulk or their hogs on mast and
quietly awaiting the turn of event*.
