of Honolulu it was whiapnred among the
ju-ople that the naughty Englishman hud
stolen the gills. The news reached the
ears of his uugust majesty, King Kam-
mrhanunehn, and he ordered bin mil ca
ter of war to command the oommnnder
of a Hawaiiun war ship lying in the bar
lair to demand of the English captain
the rendition of the Honolulu girls.
The Ynnko circus manager, John Wil
son, was getting ready to suil for tho
island of Tahiti while this storm was
gathering. Thu Englishman proposed to
bet Wilson t>500 that his yacht, the
••Themis.” could heat his hark, the “Al
ice,” to Tahiti Wilson accepted, and
under cover of this bet the Enghshmuii
spread his canvas to the breeze, and
sailed out abreast of the “Alice" for
Tahiti, with the girls on board, Hinging
defiance in the teeth of tho King, the war
minister, the captain anil everybody• As
the king saw tho Union Jack streaming
from the mainmast of the Themis, and
witnessed the yacht sailing seaward with
all her canvas Hying, he is said to have
almost torn his royal shirt ot!\ The cap
tain of tho war steamer was ordered to
inako instant pursuit, overhaul the Eng
lishman (if possible,) and take the girls
from him or sink tho Themis to tho bot
tom of tho sea. The race was going on
at tho latest ucoounts. Whether the
Englishman hns been caught or not, is
not yet known to our people. Captain
llanlmm is a retired officer of the royal
navy of England- He was an honored,
guest of King Kummehammoha while
sojourning on the islands, and in view
of his rank, buildings 011 tho palace yard
were placed at his disprsai, that ho might
ho comfortable during his stay. In fact,
evory courtesy was extended to him by
tho royal family. How sliuhhy to make
so ungrateful a return for suoh distin
guished consideration.

Tho following extract is taken from *the

those who use cocoanut oil have been

year of the ox, ordered a new examination
of tho trees to be made, and reduced the
tax to one hundred cowries for tliree
