at sunset aud continues until the stars are
seen on Mon lay. Tho services at tho
Synagogue to-night will be found very
interesting, aud the music to be most ex
cellent. All aro free to attend who de
sire to do so.
The Day of Atonement is commanded
to be observed in Exodus xxx, 1') and is
rigorously observed by every Israelite in
tho land by abstaining wholly from food
and drink. The bodily privation is only
a reminder to attune the mind to eouipre-
heud the nothingness of all that is hu
man, and to ask of God some portion of
that holy spirit attainable only by devout
communion with the source whence a'l
blessings flow.
By humbly asking forgiveuoss of God
for laws violated, aud promising sincero
abslineuce for tho future, the “seed of
Abraham” believe that their sins will be
come white as snow. Not so, howover, in
wrongs done to fellow man. In all such
c.ses restitution must be made wherever
possible. Pardon asked and promises
lcligiously made, theu and not till then,
is tho Heavenly Father sought to seal the
best efforts of weak humanity. When
this is sought to bo accomplished, the
resonant sounds of the closing service
(NogelHh) pour fourth from thankful
souls aud peace is mado with God.
On the 2(»th and 27th the Feast of Tab
ernacles occuis, which commemorates the
ingathering of tho harvest and also the
departure of I lie children of Israel out of
Egypt, when they dwelt in booths. This
feiist lasts eight days, with the ortho
dox. In olden times tho people gave ex
pression to their joy by binding together
the j aim, the myrtle aud tho willow, aud
took also the citron to iho temple. These
represent four classes of mankind. The
palm, tho rich and haughty, but doing uo
good with his wealth ; the citron, the man
of possessions, who, liko the frugrance of
tho citron, which is enjoyable by all, uses
them to blear mankind ; the myrtle, the
modest man who gives of his means un
ostentatiously ; tho willow, tho poor man
who lives upon tho nourishment of hi-i
neighbor. Moses thus enforced tho les-
tlint in unity there is- strength ; that
they would bo overcome, if divided ; that
their religious worship must be observed
collectively as a people, and bo responsi
ble for tbo church to creator. Women
and children, like tho citron, cannot bo
bound with the others, but by good deeds
can shed a fragrance on all that do good
to tho human race—low and Christian.
Tho command for tho observance of
the Feast of Tabernacles can be found in
Exodus xxiii, to, and Leviticus xxiii, 33.

Why is it that tho Charleston mer

West Point railroads do not enter this
point as a competitor for tho cotton and
other carrying trade of Columbus—a place
that annually ships some 55,000 bales of
cotton and rocoivos several million dollars
worth of goods, besides sending out
immense quantities of factory pro
ducts ? This is a question daily
propounded by tho morchauts aud cotton
men of Columbus. They say it is be
cause tho Western Railroad is not allowed
to pro rate with them, but this does not
answer. Consider tlio immense capital
of the connecting roads, and tlio presont
condition of tho Western. They own
enough stock in tho Western ltuilroad to
