We were not cut out to eanva--H. Our
diaposition is too sweet and our feelings
too sensitive; besides, wo l ate tho physi
cal exertion of walking and visiting and
bogging a fellow mortal to lot us give pub
licity to his business for tho very innde-
quite remuneration which we ask from
the world for our valuable services. We
tried it tho other day ; shaved, put on
onr Sunday garments, our Hunday smile
and tile, and a cane, for which we were
measured years ago by some loving friends
who were running for office, and who im
agined we were a big man in our pro
duct. Wo lit a pipe and said, ‘‘Now I
will begin at the upper end of one side of
tnestroit and canvass gracefully down
that side, to avoid crossing, and come
back the other side in the charming cool
of the evening." If we were going to n
man's shop to surprise him by the volun
tary offer of a few thousand, we could be
bold as General Toombs, but to
go in and nsk u fellow to let us
work for him—well the fact of it is our
ardor cooled as we neared the field of ac
tual labor, so wo invested in a cigar, five
for a quarter, arid this to berew our cour-
ngo to the canvassing point. We lit, and
took another staid, heud down like the
most determined of creatures, and then
advancing boldly we stepped off at as
quick n double-quick as we could muster
with safety, and becoming editorial dig
nity. Filled with our noble purpose wo
never culled a halt till we got down to the
gas works. This establishment never did
advertise. Tho Superintendent is a most
tourtly gcntlemau. We decided totry
mr'prentice hand on him. We entered
tho smutty precincts—“His Honor is not
in ?" wo remarked, and a man, with a
soiled face, delighted us by saying, “No;
gono to dinner." “What do you do with
your charcoal, friend f” ‘ Soil it." “Ah,
yes, to bo sure—but - ah, do you ever
give it away- -in trade as I might say ?"
“Not that 1 knows on; but what
have you got. to trade ?" “I’m
canvassing. ft would gladden my
soul to advertise that pilo of vegetable
carbon—your works, you know, and his
Honor the ox-Mayor"— We saw the man
was looking savago ; so wo hastily ex
plained, “Oh! 1 beg your pardon, bolovod
son of toil. I want no money ; only ad
vertise, and I'll take everything out in
trade.'' “Woll, perhaps, that 'd bo the
bed. way to git t id of tho works, for the
I eoplo of our enterprise’ town all make
tho r own g is."
Wo hbw we Imd pul our foot in it. We
tried to make that mortul rauu believe we
wire joking, and didn’t uaul Aliy adver
tising. NVo left onr undying regards for
LisH inor—we le t Then, perplexed, we
decided to carry out our origiual pro
gramme and begin with fresh, but by no
tuo ms s're.-igthoned resolve, at the upper
end of Broad at root. Tlioro is nothing
gnudor in the worl 1 than a man, bent on
a good purpose, aud walking in tho sun,
with th* Ihormomotcr at !M aud a frac
tion, to cmry that purpose out. Howard,
toiling through tho wastes of Russia ;
Kane, struggling 'mid the glassy hills of
Arctic ioo; Livingstone, with a heroism
thut has no parallel ; George Francis
Train and Thoo.—but this has nothing to
do with it; the fact is, tbo subject, liko
tho actual duty we were performing, ia
not pleasant, and now, as then, we feel
liko switching off into a side track. But
tho path of duly is plain aud straight—as
a str.ng. We want protty near Broad
stiout’s northern terminus, aud stopped
boforo a stately Mructuro with “Bank” on
it. We might have entered it, but a gen
tleman told us the word ne. dvd nn “or'' to
poifftjt it. We stopped into some provi-
hion stores, and in ono discussed “Darwin
on i'.xprosdon" with a cl. ncal looking
man, aid in another wo had the gl irious
sati-.faction of beatiug a boy pretty near
full grown—a gaiuo of checkers. We
then passed tho bank and saw a nice look
ing young uian with a moustarho count
ing money, aud we wondered if he
wouldn't advertise it, aud lot us tuko it
out iu trade. We went on in our labor of
canvassing, aud stopped tj take breath
boforo a jeweler’s window, and to ponder
ou tho ups and downs of a German ami u
Frenchman, who, iu hostile attitudes,
contemplated each other from the oppo
site ends of the \v. iking beam of a won
derfully ingenious clock. Tho soldiers
being iu tho position of running, wo pro-
sumo they were put thero by tho ennuing
designer to—make time.
We didn't canvass any more; wo wont
homo hungry, and to comfort ourselves
wo read over a lot of invitations to barbe-
cuos amt pic-uios. Wo thero and then
determined to accept each and every one
of them, confident that wo can’t starve
while this kind of thiug is in season.
Will some delinquent subscriber give us
a bag -in trade—yon see we must remem
ber tho litllo onos, and a bag would come
in handy, if properly manipulated. We
regret uotboing rig?*©J up with a possum-
liko capacity. If Providence had to ro-
moddlo tho rural newspaper fraternity wo
could make some number one suggestions.
Perhaps Ho doesu't notice us at all now—
questionable if Ho hasn’t given us up,
kuowing that Bob Toombs, that great
and virtuouH man, has taken upuu him
self oar correction ami censorship. Well,
wo will boar all Heaveu's uffliedous with
patience, conscious <hat thero is ano'her
aud better world, where there will bo no
death nor—Toombs. 0.
Tilt: CUATTASOOUA CONVEN
TION.
Wo again suggest to the * Democratic
press of Georgia and Alabama tho propri
ety of nation iu reforonco to tho Conven
tion of Radical politicians to be held in
Cbattnnooga on tho 13th of October
However thoy may attempt to disguise its
objects by tho phrased >gy of tho call, we
know fnll well that it is intended to rake
aud scrapo together all tho instances of
conflict between tho two races at the
South, or difficulties that can bo mudo to
present the appearance of party intoler-
anon, and to lay them before Congress
next winter, with a view to influencing
further legist«tion injurious to the South
ern States. With this v.ew they have
stirred up the difficulties that have al
ready occurred among us, evidently by
pre-concert, aud now their purpose is to
innke them answer the . cont mip'ated
ends. In at least one Congressional Dis
trict in Georgia they have already ap
pointed a committee to contest the soat of
the Democratic nominee if he should be
elected ! aud they know ho will bo elected
by n majority of thousands. Their plan
of operations is to find out and report a
few cases iu which RaHeals may fail to
voto in the several contri**, to pretend
that thoy wore prevented from voting
by violenco or intimidation, and to ask
Congress for this cause to givo the HOAt of
the elected Democrat to tbo defeated
Rudical. We kuow tint there are instan
ces in which Congress, upon just such
pretences as this, and upon no other, has
turnod out Democrats whoso m jorilies
amounted to thousands and given their
seat a to badly beaten Radicals. There is
no reason to doubt that the Radical party
of the South will persuade some of their
voters to refrain from going to
the polls, aud to set up tho
pretence of intimidation after
wards, as a plea to go before Congress.
And the Radical party of the country will
have a double incentive to make tho next
CoogrPHs strongly Radical. It is tho Con
gress that will have fo elect a President
in case of the failure of tho poople to
elect in 187G. If there should be a
“scrub race,” as seems now highly proba
ble, tho election may go to tho House,
and then the Radical party will reap tho
fruits of its programing iutriguo. Then
the full design of tho difficulties lately
incited, and of tho lUdical congregation
at Chattanooga, will lie made apparent.
Are we not justified by occurrences of
tho past, as well ns by events of daily
occurrence now, in believing this to be
tbo prime object of th i Chat'Anoogn Con
vention ? And if this is its object, ought
not tho white poop’o of tho South to take
tiiuoly measures to dofeit it? We th nk
ho, aud wo think that tho bent way to do
this is to hold a uimultuueous Conserva
tive Convention at Chattanooga to pres ut
to Congress tho true condition of tho
South—to nntunsk tho disturbers of her
peace—to disclo-o and deaounco tho in
famous party intrigue which so to in
flict new indignities and wrongs upon our
people nnd to cheat thorn out of tho right
of representation. If our brothrm of
tho press agree with us, they will ne* th it
there is no timo to be lost. Delogates
ought to bo solootod within the non two
weeks, and facts iu reference to difficul
ties that have already occurred ought to
lie carried to th© Convention by tneiu, or
laid boforo it dnriug its session. Wo can
loso nothing by presenting the truth, as a
counter statement, in opposition to tho
cunningly devised mioreprosontations of
tbo office-seekers’ Convention at Chatta
nooga. On the contrary, we may thereby
disabuse the minds of many honest men
at the North and help our friends of t‘ at
region in thoir struggle with ltidi a’inm.
But if anything is to be done, it ought to
be done at once.
