Since Bepteiuhor 1st (he steamers have
brought to Columbus Ml bales of cotton,
against 403 same time last yenr.
Unhealthy Weather.
Very warm days and the cool nights ate
not very productive of healthful breezes.
Parties who have money had better re
main away until Home time in October.
Colored Company.
Tho colored military company was dril
ling on the streets lust night. Lots of
drumming. They are said to drill pretty
well, but liavo entirely too much of that
bass drum.
Kukluxlsm—How to Lnd It.
The miscrablo orguniziiuou which dis
graces tho country and civilization, is
known to be tho result of unmitigated
and lament able ignorance, which is enti
tled to pity as well ns condemnation. It
is wisely suggested by soino one to send
schoolmasters and missionaries among
the deluded people, nnd ulso tickets for
the next Graud Gift Concert of tho Pub-
lio Library. Thus they will at onco
nohieve knowledge, piety nnd property,
nnd bccomo good citizens. it
The First of the .Seaton.
On tho night of September 30th we are
to have, in the Opern House, Shoridau,-
Msok A Day’s combination of variety and
pautomiraic artists. They havo quite u
number of females with them. They
have sougs dances, comic noting and
other specialties of interest. Tho troupe
remains boro only tho evening mentioned.
Butler Camp Meeting,
Rev. Messrs. Dixon nnd MoGohee have
returned. They report the meeting tho
most encouraging one they havo yet at
tended. Mr. Dixon, who loft Tuesday
night, reports to that time fourtoou addi
tions to the church and over fifty conver
sions. The camp was closed yesterday
morning, when doubtless moro members
had been obtained.
Stealing Corn and Cotton.
Marshal Murphy and policeman Smith
arrested, on Tuesday night, Henry Tur
ner, Peter Harvey and Fannie t)ozier--all
colored—for stealing a sack of corn, and
also one of cotton, from Col. Starke’s
plantation. They were caught with the
property. They are to bo tried before
the County Court, now in session
HI. L. Patterson.
We were misinformed. Ho is able to
swallow the Civil Rights abomination,
and still remaius ns (be candidate for the
Judge of the Circuit Court in tho 10th
Alabama District over the river. Wo be
lieve he will be badly bentou. He ought
to be; for there’s less excuse for him to
abandon the whites for tho sake of office
than any man of whom we know in Bus-
aell county.
River X
Tho New Jackson, George Whitesides
oaptaiu, arrived yesterday, at 5 p. m., with
IF® bales of cotton, obtained mostly from
Neal’s Landing, Florida. Shu had to pull
through the channel at Woolfolkn. Tho
river has fallen nine iuohes uinoc she left
Columbus. There are some two huudred
bales on the river waiting shipment to
Columbus,
The New Jackson leaves this morning
at 9o’clock. On her Inst trip down she
took from Goluuihus 332 barrels and 22
bales of merchandise. Mr. Max Sparks,
late book-keeper of G. W. Brown, is now
clerk on the steamer. A cleverer geutle-
man or moro oompateut official cannot be
found.
A Quest Ion of Board.
A bachelor lawyer is said to havo beeu
pathetic in hi* petition to a magistrate to
allow somebody unknowu to go free of a
board bill for a white w oman, and charge
tha party who left her with tho proprietor.
Ha sl^» stated, several times, that he was
not personally interested in the matter.
His friends joked him a good deal about
111 particularity with whieh be exoused
Owe Them Thanks.
The Democratic party of Muscogee
should re urn their thanks to A. J. Ket-
ohuni nod other leaders of the extreme
Radical elan. The whites could not have
have mado b«*t er arrangements had they
the management of the entire business.
These leaden, one of whom, Cetchnm,
was a GrceloyPo in the Presidential cam
paign, have adopted a civil rights plat
form and nominated two negroes for the
Legislature. Ketchum very wisely refus
ed a proffered candidacy himself, for he
knew ho would bo defeated, and thus lose
prestige, if he had any. The effect has
been to unite the whites in a solid body
to defeat these negro candidates, and has
driven from the Republicans those
who aro opposed to any semblance of race
issue and are willing to vote for compe
tent and just men. This Radical action
settles all disputes in the Democratic
ranks. T hey accept the issue tendered
and will, of course, elect their men. These
Rndical colored loaders can scarce conceal
their hate of the whites, and in their fu
tile envy have done the very thing to ar
ray overy white man against them. Civil
rights is their platform—they refused to
rescind Ketchum’s icsolntion openly de
olaring for it—and nominated U.
B. Bailey and Green B. Lewis, col
ored. Tho Republican party
this county is badly demoralized and
mixed, and tho Democrats havo to thank
these for that desirable condition of af
fairs, nnd also for their own perfect unity.
Of the 187 cotton mills 42 are located
in Georgia, and of these four companies
for, if wo counted large buildings, seven)
aro at Columbus. The next Ktates are
Tennesseo 12, North Caroliua 30, Bouth
Carolina 18, and Alabama 10. Of the
487,823 spindles and 10,405 looms, Geor
gia runs 137,330 and 2,034. Of this
amount tho Columbus inillH run 35,000
spindles and 031 looms, about a third of
all in tho entire State. Georgia trebles
almost the consumption of any other cot
ton State, the flguros being for her 18,-
522,800 pounds. South Carolina is next
highest, with 7,134,558 pounds. The Co
lumbus factories now annually take about
8,000 bales of cotton, in round numbers.
It looks as if our city was of some impor
lance in tho manufnuttiling line.
The Kinship of the Races-A Theological
Question Settled.
In his speech, on Tuesday night, at tho
mooting of tho “fight and loft wings" of
the Radical party. Van Jones, a colored
orator, who looks as much like Cal. Wag
ner, in his camp-meeting song, as if he
was his twin brother, advanced the follow
ing idea, but in darkey language :
“The white folks say thoy are the chil
dren of God, and’ some folks say the nig
gers aro tho children of the devil, and
that the two didn’t come from tho same
stock. That ain’t so; for the devil was
an angel once, and tho angels aro the chil
dren of God, utid that makes the niggers
the grandchildren of God and kin to tho
white folks.”
Van still luHists that ho wants two black
men to go to tho Legislature, ns they will
represent that race and uot his white kin;
though when county officers aro to be
elected, ho is for intelligent gentlemen,
and therefore votes for Democrats.
New Military Uniforms.
The City Light Guards have determined
to get a new uniform of blue. The cap
is like that of the 7th New York regiment.
Coats of dress pattern, two shades darker
than pants, breast corded with white ;
pants with white stripes. The uniform
to cost each private $31 50; Corporals
$38.50, and Sergeants $30.50, and com
missioned officers $97.50. Tho piivates’
uniform will cost$2.50 more with epaulets,
but they are to be dispensed with at pres
ent. Terms are $2.50 when ordered;
$2.50 when received, and the same amount
each month until all arc paid for. Officers
settle in same proportion. Devlin Jr Co.,
of New York, aro to furnish tho uniforms,
and have sent out a Mr. White to take
measures. The Captain gives a note with
security, aud the members give him their
notes with security.
The Columbus Guards last night ap
pointed ucommittee, consisting of Messrs.
Clapp, Ware, Long and Wells, to sco if
thirty-five men would take new coats of
the same pattern of those the company
procured in 1859—of red doth, cut dre*s
fashion, and trimmed with gold lace. The
coat, without the white buff breast, is
$28. This can be added subsequently.
Terms of payment same as above men
tioned. The Guards have new blue pants
already, and have ordered caps.

—R. A. Rridges has been appointed
master mechanic of the Savannah and
Memphis Railroad.
—Laziness is now politely termed,
“Troubled with a chronic indisposition
to exertion.”
—A negro insisted his race was men
tioned in the Bible, for ho liml hoard tho
preacher read, “Nigger Dennis wanted
to be born agniu.”
A Great CUy.
Columbus, despite the hard times, is
growing, and there is money iu*the coun
try, aud there will be more. Were this
not the case Mr. S. Lnndauer, woll known
as a cautions merchunt, would not have
laid in at ho much expense such a magni
ficent stock of dry goods uh now fill in
endless piles his beautiful Now York
Store on Broad street. He has brought
New York here, and his place must at
once become popular to those who need
dry goods or wish to examine the useful
and beautiful.
The Columbus Iron Works.
They are now in full blast, and employ
some seventy-ttvo men, ou regular time,
in tho shops aud outside. Thoy have
nearly finished the castings of the new
steamer. Little remains to oompleto
them. The establishment is turning out
a variety of work.
