last evening. Tho entertainment was
given under tho auspices of the “Chips,**
and tbe most lovely and charming
maidens of Columbus, Wynnton and
neighborhood, und a few from
other cities, united with our first
and most popular and genial young
men, to make the hoqrs fly on rosy
piuion, unfreighted by a caro. Excited
by the glamour of radiant forms that
flitted hero nnd there in a mr ze of profu
sion, a looking-on bachelor perforce
straightened himself into an exclauiution
point to express wonder nnd admiration.
One might almost say in beholding, that
“me thought angelu visited us in dreams
only, until now." Then, too, intermin
gled with tho throng, seeming ohaos to a
novice,perfect order at tho second glance,
were the young men of Columbus, al
ways tastefully dressed, inunly, courteous
aud attentive, Hoeing that none lucked tho
dovoirs of devotodnoHs.

Samuel Salisbury and T. S. Court; tho

Policeman Smith yesterday morning ar
rested tho notorious cotton thief uml bur
glar, Jeff Williams, colored. Tho latest
charge against him was stealing cotton
from Col. Wm. McDoiignlO, of Russell
county, Ala. The thief was lukon before
Justice Shivers, and in default of u #150
bond, was committed to juil.
On Wednesday night otio or uioro
thieves, supposed to bo uegroos, stole 500
pounds of seed cotton from an old freed-
man named Hawuoo, living on u part of
Col. McDouguld's laud. Tbi.s cotton they
put ou tho back of Huwueo's old horse,
aud in attempting to como to town tbo
horse full iuto a ditch with bis heavy load
aud broke himself dowu in the loins.
Leuving biui there to die, the worthless
vagabonds stole a wheelbarrow from an
other negro uud brought off the cotton.

Apnlachicola at 10 a. m. to-day.
Tbe Wylly broke two hog chains oil her
wsy down, nnd will be deduiued a day or
two at Eufaula for repairs. These hog
ehaius are those which bind the stern ami
bow together over the middle stanchions.
They will bo replaced by heavier iron
rods.
The Clara Dunning, the Government
boat, is duo to-day. Hhe, we understand,
is 175 foot long by 30 wide, ami draws
light 19 inches of water.

Russell County Ncyroe* Arrented.
On Mr. William Jonoa’ place in Russell
county, Ala., are negroes who have beeu
renting from him. They had brought
cotton in the city nnd sold it without any
intimntion of settling nuy rent. Posses
sory warrants woro taken out, bnt tho ne
groes would not bo served, uud defied tho
Sheriff, and threatened to kill any ouo who
leavored to nrrost them. To ascertain
whether a propritor has any rights, and
not wishing to embroil the w’hites and ne
groes in nny difficulty, Mr. Jones Appealed
to tho United Htates authorities, and n
Deputy Marshal was put nt hiH service,
who, with assistance, arrested three of
tho ringleaders, and they woro brought
Inst ovoning to Columbus for safo keep
ing. The cotton was sold in Columbus.
