THE ADVENTURE# OF AM EVEN I NO.
Night-before-last there was a ring at a
residence near the old Methodist Church,
while the family, consisting of a number
of gentlemen and lady boarders and sev
eral visitors, were at tea. Tho caller
asked for an imaginary person, and appa
rently left. A moment afterwards a ser
vant saw him decamping from the ball
with the new overcoat of a Broad atreet
bookkeeper and at once sounded the
alarm. Iu a moment the wildest confu
sion reigned, and crio* of “where is my
baby,’ “look out for tho silver,” and
“save us,” the thief disappeared. It is
Raid that a prominent merchant of Broad
street was inure efficient after quitting
the ladies to look after the socurity of his
own wrapping. Tho other gentleman
went on a wild search for his lost garment
hut turned up next morning for breakfast
looking cool. The baby hud been found,
the ladies had the silver counted, and the
femininity of the household were alone
when auother ring startled tho excited
circle, and another, and still another, be*
fore the council of wur in the darkened
parlor could furnish volunteers to attend
the front door. At last, with hearth
broom and scissors, they went and found,
horrors! another man! “Soize him!”
“Arrest him ! ” “police!” “fire!” rang
out on tho still night, making it imposni*
ble to hear the gentleman’s (a stranger)
modest inquiry in regard to a nolghbor.
About the time tho true situation was
dawning on the lady, the frightened gen
tleman beat a hasty retreat, regardless of
the landlady’s distress at seeing a possible
boarder depart. Nor has ho had the
courage to pass within a block since.
Tho overcoat is still at large, and the
young man, who lives near Blanchard’s
store, is relying upon a mild winter for
comfort until spring. His experience se
riously behooves otir citizens to be on
their guard against the sneak thieves so
evidently abroad.
