Lead Inetead of Tarnipa,
Mr. Charles Munro, who has a vegeta
ble garden on his father's place, a few
miles from the city, has been missing tnr-
nips from hia patch ; so ho commenced
watching his property. Thursday night
he blazed loose a double-barrel gun at a
negro, who was busy gathering turnip-
tops. Tbo darkey ran, leaving blood be
hind and a bag-full of greens. It seems
that ho run as far as the bridge near the
cemetery, where he fell from exhaustion.
Colored passers reported the case to offi
cers early yesterday morning. They went
out with a wagon, and brought the fugi
tive to the guard-house. Hu lias four
buckshot in his breast and one in tho
back, and may dio ; though the physicians
say ho has chauces for life. Ho gives his
name as Andrew Jackson, but answers to
several othors. Girard, he says, has boon
his lurking pluco, but he refuses to make
any further disclosure. He wos in tho
sumo turnip patch a few nights before,
when Mr. ( har'es Munro shot at another
nogro.
Mr. Charles Munro declined to prose
cute tho nogro. Last afternoon, at the
request of tho wouuded man, ho was sent
in a wngon to Alabama. Colored drivers
of cotton wngons report that ho was last
scon lying on tho side of tho road beyond
Girard. It is supposed the express driver
told biui to get out, and tho iuau did so
nnd W’&lkod as far as ho could. Many of
his own race parsed, but none extended
aid. On this side ho was cared for, but
ho wanted to got out of tho way of any
possible punishment of the theft.
Country Frodncta at Auction.
The farm property of the estate of the
late J. A. L. Leo was sold on tho planta
tion Thursday, Mr. D. P. Ellis, of Ellis
A Harrison, being auctioneer. The at
tendance was very good. Hogs brought
$3.00 to $8.50 each; luilk cows $20 to
$40 ; sheep $1.50 to $2.25 ; corn 85c. per
bushel; fodder 75c. per hundred weight;
cotton seed 15c. per bushel; mulos (not
iu good order) $00 to $85 ; colts $30 to
$50; horses $00 to $90. Prices geuorally
are regarded as good. Corn, fodder, and
cotton need would have realized higher
figures, but they wero desired on tho
place, aud parties wero unwilling to run
them up on Mrs. Loo.
lteleaaed on Hand.
Daniel Wilkinson, arrosted on a bench
warrant, was yesterday brought before
Ordinary Brooks, who released him on a
fifty dollar bond. He is the one who es
caped from BailiiT McMicliael, nml was
recaptured. He has been in j iil some two
mouths, aud all parties are represented as
desirous of sottling the matter. Tho
chargo is a slight misdemeanor, and tho
escaping is regarded as a very foolish no
tion, as ho has sutTerod much longer iui
prisonmout thereby. Tho grand jury
foiiud a true bill against him, but tho
prosecutor is now roported us willing to
drop the mutter.

Strong Probability of m Fair Next Fall,
The buildings on tbe Fair Grounds be
longing to tbe Columbus Industrial Asso
ciation were not sold yesterday, as adver
tised. A company of gentlemen is being
formed to buy tho property, and if the
Commons Commissioners will renew tho
lease of tho grounds, they will do so, ro-
pair and improve the buildings and sur-
ronndings, and give a grand exhibition
next fall. Faom the character of the men
who have undertaken the enterprise, wo
are confident success will crown their
efforts, and that we can again have annual
Fairs as delightful, admirable, and inter
esting as those of tho post. The entire
community will endorse tbe louse of the
commons. All approve the idea of having
these autumnal expositions, but nro not
willing to risk money in the enterprise.
Nnoe will object, however, to a second
lenso of the grounds, for the improve
ments put there havo already onhanced
thoir value, and a Fair each October will
not only add to this, but also to that of
the adjoining grounds. The now company
proposes to havo grand “flower shows’’
