Brown's troupe drew a large audience
of our beet ladies at the matinee at the
Opera House last sfternoon. Eaat Lynne
wss played in such s manner as to bring
tears to many eyes.
Torrents of rain fell at uight, and in
oonsequenoe only a small house assem
bled, though many reserved seats were
sold.
Huntly's personation of Rip Van Win
kle was much admired, though ho had the
disadvantage of a comparison with the
faultless, sympaihotio acting of Joe Jeffer
son, who has made the character a spe
cialty. Miss Belle Reynolds made a
charming Meeuiie. Mr. Huntly is an ac
tor of high uieritraod displays remarkable
versatility of talent.
The company is fur above the average,
and their entertainments are of the most
excellent and praiseworthy description.
They have ono of the best brass bands
and orchestras which has ever visited the
South with a theatrical troupe.
Columbus Colored Emigrant to Liberia
We have been shown n letter written to
Mr. Joseph Kyle by his former colored
oarriage driver, Janies Potter, who was
seized with the emigration fever
several years ago, aud W'cnt to
Liberia. The writor says he
would like to see all the home people once
more, hut has not the means to return.
Hiuce bis arrival in Liberia ho has planted
coffee and gathered ^soiue. It is
growing. Would send somo to Mr. Kyle,
ouly he had uot enough at the tiiuo of
writing, uud it is so hard to get anything
to a person when sent away. The writer
did not find the country such as he ex
pected, aud at first was very much dissat
tatted ; but not having the means to re
turn, he was compelled to be content
ed. The country is not what they (the
Colonization Society) say it is. lie Bays
Hannah and Virginia, daughters of James
Potter, are well, llowdys are sent to all.
He requests his letter to be read in the
colored M. E. church after Mr. K. is
through with it.

Contributions of a Columbus Church
and E. S P. Mills to the Baptist
Orphans* Home Near Atlanta.
Rev. E. W. Warren, pastor of the First
Atlanta Baptist Church, in a letter which
is published in tho Christian Index, after
speaking of llie reception of $10 from
several lady mouthers of tho church and a
box from Columbus, says:
Here is an inventory of the contents of
the box:
Donation list for Orphan Home sent by

Church, Columbus, Georgia.
EAOLX A FHENIX MILLS DONATION.
Two bolts and 7 pieces white home

society’s donation.
Half dozen socks, 1 pair stockings. 9
yards calico, 1 pair stockings, thread and
homespun, 1 bolt homespan, 11 yards cali
co, 1 pair socks, G yards homespun and
thread, - G yards linseys, 2 aprons, 2 pair
socks, suit of child’s clothes, flannel for
blind bat»y,thread and stockings, 1 apron,
l pair socks, 2 towels, 2 aprons, 1 apron,
9 yards calico, 1 quilt.
The Eagle A Phenix Mills are the first
corporation to open their hearts aud
purses to this benevolent enterprise. Let
this generous deed be remembered, and
returned in kindness by the friends of the
Home. The Southern Express Company
did what ip characteristic of them, brought
the large box, and delivered it free of
charge. Henceforth, let no one say there
is no unselfish generosity, no disinterest
ed benevolence.
SCENE A1 THE ORPHAN HOME.
The pastor went out to 6ee the box
openod. As the lid was removed, the
matron saw the blankets which lsy on top
of the other goods. “Providence has sent
the very things we wanted most,” she
said. Then as bolts of homespun, checks,
and the great variety of much needed ar
ticles were exposed to view, sho wus af
fected at such unexpected generosity, and
said, “We ought to have a thanksgiving
meeting.” So, after all had been seeu,
we retired into tho room, called all the
children together, read a thanksgiving
psalm, aud returued thunks to God, and
invoked His blessings upon the generous
donors.
They will not be soon forgotten by the
matron, teacher and orphaus; nor by
tbo»e of us to whom, in a special manner,
is committed the oversight of those dour
children.

—The modern American boy, plodding

Louis Napoleon, tho late Emperor, was
tho theme of comment. One account
says:
“When young Prince Louis Napoleon,
two or throe years ago, made a descent
upon France, a remarkable omen attended
him. An imperial eagle swept from the
sky and perched upon hia shoulder. Huw
mnch destiny was in this eagle is tbu« de
scribed by a Paris editor: Twos in Loudon
at the time the Prince was eduoatiug tho
famous eagle. Every morning the Prince,
clod in the traditional costume of the Em
peror, placed himself in the centre of the
large gurdeu attached to the homo in
which he lodged. Iu the top of the im
mortal cocked hat was placed a beefsteak.
The eagle, kept hungry till this hour, was
launched into the air from a remote cor*
uer of the grounds, and after wheeling
around once or twice, he punctually des
cended to the cooked hat, wherein was
served bis breakfast. It was thought nec
essary that the multitude should be aston
ished with seeing the imperial bird whis
per to the Prince tbe counsel he brought
down from the Emperor on high. Occa
sionally, therefore, his breakfast was mis
sing, and as he was found, with all hia
dignity, a bird capable of a pin alter, a
morsel of broiled ham was placed in the
Prince’s ear, when, not fluding the steak,
he would lean over and daintily pick it
from its hiding place.’ ”
Tbe claims of Louis Napoleon at this
time began to be agitated in France. The
government organs said if ho was elected
President the country would be ruined.
An amendment was proposed iu the As
sembly against the Bonapartists. Louis
arose in tbe Assembly and made a short
speech, disavowing tho applications of
‘Pretender” in the name of the 300,000
electors who had twno honored him with
their suffrages, Tbe government organs
claim his effort as a disastrous failure, he
was no speaker and had no ability. M.
Anthony Thouret arose, and in a tone of
contempt, stated after what he had heard
he was quite satisfied that his fears of the
Pretender” were exaggerated, and that
his amendment was useless, aud therefore
he withdrew it.
