—The brave talk by people not so*
ijeri in banks as to what they would
re done if they had been in the place
the Milford cashier, reminds a Lowell
bier of the message from a landlord in
Uiid to his agent: “Tell the tenants

One op Bbownlow’s Yarns.—Parson
rowulow tells a good story of an old
resbyterian baohelor preacher, known
ltnojt as a woman-hater until he was
eurly fifty years old, when he married
ind settle! somewhere among the mouu-
ains of North Carolina. The parson
lays: “Our bachelor friend was preach-
ng on the sinner’s excuses. *1 have
)ought a piece of ground, and wiah to go
ind see it,' said one. ’Here is want of
ndination to atten 1 to divine things,’
mid the preacher. ‘Another said, ‘I have
bought five yoko of oxen, and must ndeds
go and prove thorn.' This seems a case
of necessity. A third said, *1 have mar.
ried a wife, and therefore I cannot come.'
Huro is a case of natural impossibility,
from which we may infer,’ oontinued our
bachelor preacher, ‘that one woman will
pull a man further from the Lord than
ten steers.’ ”
The Wenders of Telegraphy.
The wonders of cablo telegraphy »re
set forth in tho following story, related
by an agent of the New York Associated
iPress: A gentleman of the Western
Union Telegraph office, at No. 145 Broad
way, New York, was sitting in the cable
oom when a d.spatcb, destined for Paris,
lame over the wiies. This message, liko
ill others for France, was to go over the
ible by way of Duxbury, Mass. The op-
ator colled Duxbury a few times, and
ten said : “Tho fellow is aaleep, evi*
*atly; but the cable men ara always
^ske; I’ll have to get one of them to
^ake him up.” tio he stepped to another
esk, called Plaiater Cove, Newfoundland,
and sent the following message : “To ca
ble operator, Duxbury—Please go and
wake up my own true love.” This mes
sage Plaister Cove hastened to send across
tho ocean to Valencia, Ireland, who in
turn “rushed” it to London; thence it
wan hurried to PuriH, and still onward to
the European end of the French cable at
Bt. Pierre; tho operator there flashing it
back to Duxbury. Iu less than two min
utes by the clock the message had accom-
p ished its journey of some eight thou
sand miles, by land and sea, as was evi
denced by the clicking of the instrument
on the Duxbury desk, which licked out in
a manner a little more petulant: “That
is a nice way to do; go ahead. Your own
true love.”
