tiring, modest man, a large planter, and
useful citizen. For a very considerable
period he has been hovering between life
and death. He has been a member of the
ohurch for years. Our older citizens are
rapidly paaaing away.

Some Comfort.
Cotton buyers, with whom low eetimates
of tbs cotton crop are favorites, are com
forting themselves with the reflection that
in 1870-'71 the New York Chronicle missed
the crop by an under estimate of 1,100,000
bales, and tba next year by an overesti.
mate of 600,000. They must remember
the Chronicle has better and more reliable
statistical information than then, and
greater telegraphic facilities. In answer
to several queries ws have received by let
ter from farmers, we really doubt whether
the editor ever saw a ootton field—we
really do; but hie paper has fuller aud
more reliable returns than any published
in this or any other country.

Mo Dividends- Salaries Affected.
Neither the Central nor Georgia Rail-
roads have deelared dividends. Owing
to this faot, we hear from good authority,
the salaries of Meroer University, located
at Maoon will have to be reduced, as a
large portion of the funds are iuvosted iu
the Georgia Railroad. This is rather hard-
on able men who have little else besides
their salaries.

The Catholic Pair.
Last night, under the green arches and
bright lamps of the Rankin Skating Hall,
was gathered a fair assemblage of lovely
women and generous gentlemen. The
Catholie Fair grows in popularity. The
largest number yet aaambled attended last
evening. We are in favor of admitting
ladies to the bar. They make magnificent
special pleaders, and can draw the last five
cents from a teller's pocket. If you have
any money or oredit they are bound to
have it, and the begging is done in snoh a
sweet, winning manner, that you are really
thankful to get rid of your superfluous
cash. It's a funny, and at the asms
time a delicious Bensation to be thus be
guiled out of your hard earned oash, but
its exhilarating, worth living for, and
you're giving your money to a good oauae.
The Fair nightly adds to its attractions.
It is a charming place to while away pleas
ant hours. Something fresh and novel is
always springing up. All should go and
help on the good work.

the railroad presidents and superintend

upon, but we doubt whether it lasts long.
There has been two much of these things.
The Central had better fight it out on its

Theatre Last Might.
Heart Hungry was played to a paying
house last evening by the Helen D'Este
troupe. We oannot but add to the high en-
oomiums we have before given this com.
psny. It is far above the average, and
the leading lady possesses abilities that
will win her fame and fortune.
In Maud Livingstone she wsa
most excellent. The (iley closely
follows Mrs. Westmoreland’s novel. Mr.
Stuttz was much admired io his rendition.
Several others of the players evinosd de
cided interest, and tha entire play passed
off well.
To-night the troupe gives an entertain
ment for the benefit of the Female Orphan
Asylum of Columbus. The entire pro
ceeds will be given to that Institution,
after deduotiug $200, not tha neee
expenses of the oompany per day.
All should attend, to se
fine play well acted. The play of Hamlet
has been chosen. In this character Mr.
Hiuttz has won an enviable reputation.
Theatre-goers will be highly interested
aud pleased. This is the last appearance
of the troupe in Columbus.
