TO-MOBSOW.
The honored custom, suggested first by
the ladies of Oolnmbus, of sntmally deco,
rating the graves of thoee “who wore the
gray' with Spring’s choicest floral offer
mgs—beauty’s tribute at valor's shrine—
is tp be observed to-morrow. It is the
Sabbath of Georgia and the Bonth, a time
for recalling cherished memories and
illustrate the maxim of the illustrious Lee,
when he sheathed his sword forever,
thst “hoinan virtue should be equal to
human calamity." According to our
grand eld hero, “duty is the subliment
word in the language," and to-morrow
the holiest duty of the South will be
shown in harmonizing the resting places
of our “living dead," the cause they and
we loved and the noble history they made.
Old o*ks still wearing the gray, sentinel
their tombs, and loving bands will soat-
tersweet flowers over them, and while
the tear drops from saddened eyes the
bosom swells with exultant thought
dwelling on tbemeB of ohivalrous fame.
The time has been declared a legal
holiday by tho Legislature of Georgia,
and we trust—we donbt it not—that every
business house will be closed iu tho after
noon and all repair to the Opera Honse
to hear the address of Ool. Thomas Har
deman, one of the most brilliant of ora
tors, himself a wounded Confederate, and
thence join the procession to the grave,
It will be noted tho ladies invite all as
sociations iu the city to unite in the pro
cession. What say onr firemen to tnrn
ing ont in a body. There is abundance
of time to make tho arrangement, if it
has not already been done. Appear in
utiiform without the engines. Their ap
l>( arauce iu the line will add greatly to
tLo general effect.
One feature we hope to see largely rep
resented, and that is a column of
school children—Sunday school and others
—all provided with wreaths of flowers to
stiow upon tbe graves. The idea is poetic
and beautiful. Tbe day promisee to be
fine The plan of the managers is to have
thcNoobildren formed in aline in front of
Slade's school house, or at any other con
veiiient point, about 4 or 4 J o'clock, aud
join the column as it passes.
Every flower in the city should be
collected, for they are unusually scarce
this season.
The graveyard is cleaner aud brighter
than we have ever seen it. The ladies
have prepared many rich adornments,
The people generally appaer to observe
the day moro universally than ever before,
The Bee Lmet Night.

Spelling Bee at Beallwood.
Our surburban neighbors, the Beall-
woodisns, amoved themselves with a
spelling bee at thier Academy, on Friday
night. A goodly number of spectators
were present. There were two divisions
or olssses of ten eaob, composed of ladies
and gents, girls and boys. Tbeso divi
sions were beaded by Mr. Jss. Yonng and
Mr. Griggs. The spelling, as a rule, wan
excellent. Onr old friend, the ex-tax col
lector, went down early in the contest,
although he says his bee ean oat spell any
similar number in the city. Mr. James
Young’s division came out masters of the
situation, that gentleman being the only
person who did not miss a single word.
Miss Ida Frazer was the only lady who
did not miss three words. One pretty
i spelt sugar “shugar," but thinks sho
will do better next time. Altogether the
amusement of the evening was highly en
joyed.

In Command•
Capt. W. S. Shepherd, of the Colum
bus Guards, will have command of the
oolumn to-morrow iu the Memorial pro
cession. He will be assisted by several
Marshals. He has appointed H. B. Beecher
Sergeant-Major of the military battalion.
Onr friend will perform his duty admira
bly, unless he has forgotten tho active
fighting in Virginia, in which bo held
that offloe before be became Adjutant.
Decidedly a more peaceful operation than
being Sergeant-Major, when bullets
were flying like |hail around you, and
obeying Col. Homines’ orders, and yon
were dodging.
Death of Capt. W. J. McAlister.
A telegraphic dispatch reooived here
announced the doath, at 11 o’olook yonter-
day, of this well known and highly
respected citizen, at Sullivan's Island,
near Charleston, whither he had gone
some weeks ago for his health. Ills age
was fifty-nine years.
C»pt. McAlister, we learn, wnH born in
Ireland and oamo to this country when
only six years old, landing with bis
parents'at Charleston, 8. C. When quite
a young man, he removed to St Joseph,
Fla., and was engaged in building tbe
railroad from the latter plaoo to Iola.
After the downfall of St. Joseph in
1844 or 1845 he removed to Colnmlms,
and sinoe has been one of our most ener-
gettio and prominent citizens.
For quite a number of years he held
the position of captsiu on various river
ssesmers. He built the following steam
ers : Notion, Palmetto, South Caroline,
Harriet, Laura, Munnerlyn, Calhoun, W.
H. Yonng, and New Mnunerlyu. Two of
these, the Lanra and Harriet, marc named
after his daughters.
In fact, during the flush times on our
river, he was known widely as an ener
getic and popular river man.
As sn architect he superintended tbe
Georgia Homo huilding.
Sinoe the war, for roost of the time,
he was in ohafge of the building depart
ment of the Eagle and Phenix Mills, and
did much towards planning aud engineer
ing that immense establishment to its
present high stato of prosperity. He
was possessed of strong capacity and sa
gacity, and was perhaps one of the most
industrious workers who ever lived in onr
midst. A few months ago h e resigned
his position at the factory aud has since
been engaged in travel np to within a
few weeks past, when he was taken sick.
Columbus cannot well afford tfrvlose
snob a man, aud we arc sure onr citizens
will recoive intelligence of his death
with surprise aid regret.
He loaves a wife and three daughters,
all married, the eldest t<> Mr. J. J. Brad
ford, the second to Wm. M. MuokenfusH,
of Charleston, R. C., and the youngest to
H. W. Chandler, formerly of this city,
now of St. Lonis. His remains will be
brought here for iuterineut. They will
arrive here to-morrow night on the Ma
con train which arrives at forty-five min
utes past one o’olook.
