THE LECTURE OF WILLIAM DUGAS TEAM-
Last evening, in the handsome rooms
of the Young Men’s Library Association,
the first of the summer aeries of lectures
at the rooms, wm delivered by Win. Dugas
Trammell, author of “Oa Ira.” The lec
turer, Mr. Trammell, is a young man of
striking personal appearance, evidently«
student and man of strong individuality,
lie apoke in a calm, dispassionate way,
and made his points with considerable
graoe.
Mr. Trammell said he would tell a story
of the commune of Paris. The 18th
March, 1871, marked an era in history,
and from thence on, forever and over,
shall tho heights of Mount Martrehe one
of the places which men will feel like
approaching with bared feot. The battle
of the commune had been preparing since
tho beginning of time. For this Aegis
and Gleoraenes shed their blood and sue*
nessivo heroes hnd laid down their lives.
The history of tho commune was inter
esting bocnuHG it was the first government
ever established by tho working men,
and beeanso it was the beginning of tbe
end of the battle between labor and
capital.
The speaker fully sketched tho causes
which led to the establishment of the
commune, tho perfidy and treachery of
the government, headed by Thiers, Fa-
vre. Ferry and Picard. He g ive many
of the interesting incidents of the estab
lishment of the funions central commit
tee, and quoted from its proclamations
to the people. He then referred to the
social oanses which lout force and direc
tion to tho commune, and dilated upon
who were the proletairiats, introducing
and nsiug to his purposes tho definition
of Adolph do Oassagnac. Mr. T. said
they were the disinherited classes,
slaves of tho burger societies of
world. And all along their history have
been emancipated in order to cheapen
labor and relieve thoir masters of their
eare and expense in sickness snd old age.
• Their present condition was well voder-
stood. Carlyle saw the picture in all iti
force a half century ago. Rousseau
said: “When the first man dug a ditch
about a certain piece of land and said
•this is mine,’ how many wars and miser
ies would that man have saved if he had
pulled up the stakes and rilled np the
ditch and said, ‘believe not this madman;
the world is given to all men and its
fruits are theirs for their enjoyment!
Buoh, said the speaker, was the doctrine
of Rousseau ana such the commune. of
Paris meant to re-oflirm. Tho working
men of Paris hoped to settle the war be
tween capital and labor peaceably. The
wild beasts—tbe monarchists and praeto
rian hands of the empire—forced them
to war. . , . .
The speaker sketched the formal estab
lishment of the commune in glorious
terms, justified it, spoke of its grand re-
salts during its brief reign and preaKweo
a “great to-morrow” when it should tn-
% mnjpb everywhere. He said be wished he
baa the roll of those who defended the
barricades in the last days; he would de
vote the leisure hours of his life to read
ing them over, and held them more sa
cred than the Mussulman does his koran
or the Christian does his Bible. He held
that tbe enemies of the commune burned
Paris in order to charge the commune
with the deed. After a beautiful tribute
to the memory of Do La Cboux, the
speaker closed with a prophecy of tbe fu
ture triumph of “Tho Red Flag.”
The lecture was attentively heard, and
evidently impressed tho auditors in many
ways.—Atlanta Constitution, 24th.

OO-OPERATIVE SOCIETIES DESIRE A UNION
WITH TOE ORANGEHB.
London, June 24.-Preparatory steps are
being taken to bring About a Bystem of
international exchange between Grent
Britain and the United States, through
the medium of tbe Co-operative Society
Great Britain, end tbe Patrons of Hus
bandry in America. The Central Co-op
erative Board of tbe Co-oporalive Booie-
tiee has boon in correspondence with
Secretary Kelly, of tho National Grangn,
for some past relative to the project, and
a recent mooting of the Executive
Committee.#the National Grange. Next
week the anbject will bo formally preeout-
ed by a deputation from the Go-operative
Societies now brought to the United
States. The British Co-cperators ask the
aoooptanoe of tbeir plana of union and
state that tho objeot is to reform com
mercial abuses, get rid of middle men,
restore integrity in dealing, equalize
wealth, and represent that a .much
greater quantity of American pro
ducts would be eold in England,
bnt for tbe extravagant charges of
middle men, and that the same is true of
manufactured articles sent to America
from England. They propose lo operate
with the grangers by direct trade lines
sanding their own ships freighted with
their own goods to exobange for Ameri
can products, such aa wheat and ootton,
on fair, oquitable and economical torm|.
Tbe co-operative aooietiee of Great Brit
ain number about 500,000 members,while
the number of granger, is estimated at
about 2,000,000. Aa the tatter already
have State agenoiee established for tbe
purchase at wholesale ratee and for oash
of all the artiolea they desire, the plan
of exobango proposed is believed to be
feasible aiuee co-operation is one of the
underlying principles of the order. Promi
nent grangers now in the oity, especially
those from the Sooth and West, are anx
iona to have the propoeition of the Britiab
co-opeiatora aocopted, since they assert
they could sell their agricnltnral products
to better advantage in Europoan markets,
and get many artiolea of English menu
factnre at cboapnr rates than in this
oountry.

DISUOP VS. MOODY AND BANKEY— OLAD-
London, June 24.—The Bishop of
Chichester in a speech at a luncheon,
wbioh followed the laying of a corner
stone of a chapel at Ardingly, expressed
his regret that Moody and Sankey had
been allowed to bold a meeting near
Eton. He contrasted the weakness of
the authorities there npw with the vigor
whieh had been shown in former times.
Then Moody and Bankey might have
fallen on their knees before Buch a priv
