Attentien in Columbus just now ia
moat strongly attracted to the aatahlith-
ment of a Female Collage. Tha bond
proposition, adopted by tha large and
influential meeting on Tneedey night,
meet* with general approval and ondorae-
The committee authorised to oan-
van the oity for subaoriptioaa for bonds
is given in thia paper. Wo conversed
with moneyed men yesterday—those from
whom the institntion must mostly rely for
the tends to put it in operation. With
proper system, and tha character of the
College agreed npon, there will not be a
partiolo of difllonlty in having M many
bonds as need be taken by individuals,
so that tha neoessity will never exist foi
calling npon tho oity for a dollar.
It seemed to be the voioe of the moot
ing, that when the stock had been sub
scribed, those who own it should select
their own trustees to manage the affairs
of the corporation, and those offloiels to
purohane property and sleet what, and as
many Professors, and make such regula
tions m they may deem beet.
The design also of those who propose
to invest most money is to have a college
of high grade, with no preparatory de
partment. Not many in Golnmbns will
be fonnd who will take stock if tho latter
is to bo connected with the institution.
They will not Bay to the world that onr
Public Schools or private, have proved
inodoqnato to tbs wants of onr pooplo as
ter as they go. They want a college at
whieh thoHo who have advanced m far
os they can in the grammar department
of the public and other schools, oan por-
sno tho higher brandies of learning.
The college is needed to supply a want
which tve havo not now—tho obtaining
finished and polite education.
The Trustees of the Publie Schools are
in favor of abolishing their High Sohools
when the Collego is thoroughly under
way. They are of the opinion that the
oity is doing sufficient when she gives her
ohildrcn a good English ednoation. The
nigh School was inaugurated for the ex
press purpose of doing what is desired
from a more elevated institution, and it
will be abandoned when the Female Col
lego is a matter of fact.
Tho genorel sentiment of the commu
nity, ia that the Holmes’ lot is pre
ferable to any other in the oity, on ec-
aount of its many advantages of loca
tion.
We oannot at onoe expect a full grown
oollege in all its fair proportions. The
first session will probably see not more
than three classes folly organized, if that
many. We anticipate only two very tell
olasses—the Freshmen end Sophomore.
It will not require a full oorps of profoa-
sore for those. Two might do for the
present in the English, classic and seien-
tifio branches, with the addition of one
modern for languages, and another for mn-
sio. Then, neoesserily, there must be a
steward. Tho institution will grow in
repntation and asef alneee, and in three
years, at least, it onght to number two or
three hundred pupils in the various col
legiate oonrsee.
We have fonnd very few who wonld
take stock if a preparatory department is
attached. Without it and with a elear
understanding of the management and
aims of tho college, we firmly believe
twenty men will take #10,000 in stock
and the remainder of onr oitizens an
equal or larger amount.
The ooiumittee appointed ia a strong
one, and have deeply at heart everything
that will promote the welfare of Colun.
bns, and aach one evidently desires this
oollege. Columbus is Bure to havo one.
The gentlemen of the eommit-
tee can effect proper arrange
