WALL TAPER JOURNALISM BEFORE THE fetJR-
RENDER—MULE AND OAT MEAT.
Some one sends us a copy of the Min
neapolis (Minn.) Nem, of tho 24th inst.,
which contains the following remini
scence of the days of shot and shell and
bellowing of the'mortars.
Through the kindness of Mr. J. P. Bay,
of this city. We have examined quite a
newspaper curiosity. It bears the title
of the “Daily Citiiett, ” and was published
iu Vicksburg, Thursday, July 2ud, 1803.
It is printed on the blank side of a small
strip of wall paper, there being four col
umns of roadiiig matter on the sheet,
contains many interesting itoms, of
hich wo make extracts.
The editor, Mr. Swords, acknowledges
the reoept of a “mule steak,”.as follows:
Wo are indebted to kbj. tiiltwipt* for
atoi-k of Confederate beef, aHax most.
We Iihvo tried it, end o»n awmre onr
friendH that they need bare no aornplea
at cling tbe meat. It is sweet, savory
and tender, and no long as we have a mule
lefl, we aro satislled onr soldiers will be
oiii) tent to Hill mist upon it.”
bponking of tbe searoity of provisions
in tile city, of their secretion and Rale to
tlie half-starved citizens, at exborbitant
prices, tho Citizen aays :
‘•A rnmor Ims reaoljpd ns that partios
our city have been, and now are,
soiling flour nt five dollars per pound,
molasses nt ten dollars a gallon, and oorn
nt ten dollars per bushel. Wo hope this
allusion to tbe subject will induce some
one to ascertain upon whom rests tbia
extortion, and if so, let a brand not only
be placed upon bis brow, but let it be
neared into tho very brain, that humanity
may scorn and slum them as they would
the portals of boll itself.”
Tho following shows one dinner bill of
faro:
‘Toor defunct Thomas wus then pro-
pared, not for tho grave, but for tho pot,
and several frionds invited to partake of
nice “rabbit." Aa a matter of course,
0 one would wound tho feSlingH of
another, especially in tliose times, by re
fusing a cordial invitation to dinner, and
tbe guests assisted in consuming tbe pour
animal with a relish tbat did honor to
their epicurian tnsto. The “sold" assure
ns that the moat was dolioions, and that
henceforth “pussy” must look out for bor
own safety.
Of Grant's boast of ocenpying tbe oity
on tho fourth of July, the paper says:
“Grant has expressed his intention of
dining in Vicksburg on Saturday next,
and oelebratiug tbe Fourth of July by n
grand dinner, and so fortb. Ulysses must
get into tho city before he dines in it.
Tho way to cook a rabbit is “first catch
tho rabbit, etc.”
But on tho morning of the Fourth of
July tho city foil, and tho Union troops
iu the oity. Tho “form” of Thurs
day’s Citizen wrs still standing, and some
Union “oomp,” at the lower right hand
corner, inserted the following and re
printed tho edition:
NOTE.
July 4, 1808.
Two days bring about great changes.
Tho baunor of the Union floAts over
ViekHhnrg. Gen. Grant has ‘caught the
rabbit,’ be has dined in Vicksburg, and
be did living bis dinner with him. The
Citizen lives to see it. For the last time
it appears on ‘wall paper. ’ No more will
it imagine tho luxuries of mnle meat and
fricassed kitten—urge Southern warriors
to such diet no more. This is the last
wall paper edition, and is, excepting this
note, from tho types as we found them.
It will bo valuable hereafter as a curi
osity.”
Tho extracts above are substantially
correct. Major Gillespie had the mule
moat “jerked’ by Mexican “experts" be
longing to Want’s Texas Legion, and it
was au experiment of Gen. Garter L.
Stevenson, like that of tho pea bread,
and became a leading article of food
during tbo latter part of tbo seige. The
rnmor monlioned about “extortion” is
trno, though some of the parties “mark
ed” then would grow bellicose if such a
thing was intimated now, yet the proof
might bo found no farther off than Mon-
roe, Louisiana. Tbo extract about the
killing of a cat ia true. Tbe cat was
killed in tho yard of Mr. M. Shannon, one
morning about five o’clock, and the
partios to tho “demise" were Marmaduke
Shannon, Jr., afterwards killed in e
charge at Spanish Fort, noar Mobile,
and I ho writer. Tho venerable Thomas
prepared for table use by a oook
belonging to ouo of the boats sent np
Yazoo river for safoty, and Gus Lewis, a
servant- of Mr. Shannon, yet in the city.
Tho “rabbit” was made attractive by pas
try, and in addition, tlioro was mnle sonp,
pea bread, fig leaf greens and corn boor.
Invitations were sent to Col. ltobt. llioh-
ardson. Capt. Frank l’enningtym, Mej.
II. S. Ward, Moj. E. S. Gregory, now of
tho Betorsburg Appeal, and ono or two
othora. Tho businoss end of the Fedorals
attracted considerablo attention just then,
and tlio dinner was aparsoly atteudod. A
plato of the dinner wan, however, sent to
tho residouoo of onr present Alderman,
and to somo lady friends at tho corner of
Sooond E-fit and Cherry streets. The
“rabbit” and aocompaui moots were pro-
nonneed “dolioions,” but tbe young men
who perpetrated tho joke, made them
selves scarce until after they received
their porolo papers which followed very
soon, as tlio Fedorals caine in and found
the forms of tho Citizen “looked,” and
tho establishment deserted.

Engineer, 2; Bachelor of Bhiloaophy, CO;

In the after-dinner speeches the most
noticeable feature was the conciliatory
character of tho remarks from th.
alumni from tho Konth and North.
Col. Lorenzo James, of Montgomery,
Ala., spoke feelingly of tbe conflict and
its close, and extended the band of fel
lowship to all with a heart fnll of love.
Gov. D. H. Chamberlain, of South Caro
lina, spoke eloquently of that iiomul
