—Here in n Jnpaneso recipe for kot p-
ing meat fresh in hot weather: “Place it
iu a clean porcelain bowl, and pour vary
hot water over it so as to oover it. Then
ponr oil on tho water. Tho air is thus
quite excluded, aud tho meat is pro-
nerved.’’
Soil von Fnuirs.—Tho Gardeners'
Monthly gives briefly the following rules
for selecting tho best soils for the ililler-
out fruits: "Alight, dryish soil for the
poach ; a strong losuiy noil for the poar ;
nearly the Kamo fur tho plum ; a houvy
loam for tho upplo—if on limostono, all
the better; and for tho chorry, a soil
similar to that of tho peach.
Salt Fon Ants.—A writor in the Hor
ticulturist Hays: Ho had an apple tree
about four inches in diamotor that ap
peared to bo dying last your from tho of-
foota of a largo nut-liill near it. After
trying lirno and other expedients to de
stroy them, ineffectually, aud becoming
satisfied that tho tree would die if not
relieved, ho applied about four qimrtH of
salt to Iho ant hill. Tho salt produced a
terrible squirming among tho ants, caus
ing them to leave incontinently. Tho
treo is recovering its normal vigor and
bearing a lino crop of applos this yoar.
Washinu Woolens.—Prof. Artus, who
has devotod himself to tho discovery of
the roason why woolon clothing wlion
washed with soap and water, will insist
upon shrinking ami booomiug thick, aud
acquiring that peculiar order and feeling
which so annoys housekeopors, says these
evil effects aro duo to the dooouipositiou
of soap liy the acids present ill the per
spiration and other waste of tho skin
which tho clothing ahsorhs. The fat of
the soap is then prenipitalod upon the
wool. Those effects may he provented by
steeping tho articles in a warm solution
of washing soda for several hours, then
adding boiiio warm water and a few drops
of nraonia. The woolens aro thon to bo
washed nut, and liusod iu lukewarm
wst er.—Kxlumya.
Out Wonu Pheventive.—Tho Uuiou-
town Genius says : Kills It. Woodward,
of Menallen township, informs ns that
elder leaves, or loaves from tho wild
oherry treo, strewn through a com Held
iu bunches, nay twenty-five feet apart, is
a sure preventive against tho cut worm
cutting off the corn. Ho says he has
tried it for thirty-throo years, and never
knew the remedy to fail in a single in
stance. Mr. Woodward alleges that ho
has frequently tried tho experiment in
his corn flolds about the time
tho out worm was making the attack on
his corn, when they would shortly gnthor
ou and under tho bunch of leaves, whuu
they can bo killed by tho hundred. Mr.
W. vouches for tho truth of tho above,
having frequently tried the rornedy, and
it never failed iu producing tho desired
result.
Hbalttifttlnehs op Lemons.—When
people fool tho need of an acid if they
would let vinegar alone, and nse lemons
or appleB, they would fool just us well
satisfied and roocivo no injury. A sug
gestion may not como amiss as to a good
plan when lemons are cheap in tho mar
ket. A person should then purchase
aeveral dozen at once, aud prepare them
for nse in tho warm week days of the
Hpring and Summer when acids, especial
ly oitrio aud malic, or tho acid of lemons,
are so grateful and useful. Press your
hand ou the lemon and roll it back and
forth briskly on the tuble to make it
sqneozo moro easily ; thou press the juico
into a bowl or tumbler—never into a tin
vessol; strain out nil the seods as they
give a bad tasto. ltemove all the pulp
from the peels, and boil in water—a pint
for a dozen palps—to extract the acid.
A few minutes boiling is enough; thon
strain the water with the juice of the
lemons; put a pQund of white sugar to
a pint of tho juice; boil ten miuntes,
bottle it, and your lemonade is rondy.
Pat a tablespoon ful or two of this lemon
syrup in a glass of wator, and have a
cooling healthful drink.—Ex.
