It was the act of an incendiary. The
loss was between eight hundred and

cotton gin of Mr Barnoy Parker, about
two and a half mi'es from Ame icus,
was destroyed by lira. The hands were
at work at the time it caught, nnd it Is

bales of cotton and about two hundred

grist mill near by was on lire several
times, but by hard work was saved,
Mr Parker puts his loss at about one

—Mrs John C Reid, of Selma, Is
dead.
—There has been one death and one
new case of yellow fever at Brewton
each day this week.
—Eufaula Bulletin: Parties up from
Henry and Dale counties yesterday,
report a very heavy rain on Monday
afternoon last. Indeed, whorever It
rained at all, in this seotiou, more
water loll than in this city aud vicinity.
—Mr Lucieu Walker, editor of the
Eufaula Times, has been appointed su
perintendent of the ladies needle work
department at the fair. The Bulletin
says he will make a capital superin
tendent, he doesu’t know the difference
between a hemstitch and a handsow.
—Mr John Hogan, who lived throe
miles east of Glopton, died on Friday
morning last at 9 o’clock, aged 78years.
He was buried on Saturday at Ulopton.
Deceased was a worthy and good old
citizen of Dale, whose death is much
lamented in the neighborhood in which
he lived.
—There is a young lady on Eufaula
street who is fattening two geese for
the fair, She should exhibit them in
the department of fancy work.—Times
aud News. As Walker is superinten
dent of that department, this is a sly
way he has of getting an opportunity
for a good square meat. Walker should
not take advantage of his position.
—At Birmingham on the 23i the
United Slates court dismissed the fa
mous government land suit against the
holders of lauds formerly owned by the
government. The court held that the
evidence did not establish the fact that
conspiracy existed, as charged, to do*
fraud the government by entering the
mineral lauds rs ordinary farm lands,

Smith, quarantine officer on the train

April term of tho court for taking re
ceipts from several of his deputies for
larger amounts than was actually pa d

be no case.
