Yesterday wc were informed bv the master
workman of the knights of labor that ex-Gover-
nor Smith did riot speak at the picnic on Satur
day. It had been agreed to invite him. hut the
matter was neglected. We got our information
from a member of the order who spoke so posi
tively that we did not for a moment doubt its
r< ^-c-ctness, and we regret that the mistake oc
curred.

Eminent Commander George W. McEIhum-y,
of St. Aldenmr commandery. received hy yester-
dav’s express the line prizes that will he awarded
to the best drilled commandery at the grand con-
clave at Augusta on the 19th of May. They con
sist^ twelve silver candle sticks and an elegant
water service. Either prize would be n valuable
acquisition to St.* Aldenmr, and they hope to
bring one of them hack. They will he on exhibi
tion for two days at Wittich KinseU'N.

IT. L. Munson, of Columbus, stood a creditable
examination yesterday morning and was admit
ted to the bar.
Col. T. W. Grimes is now a real estate owner
in Marion county. He bought a lot of land Tues
day for $9.
Mr. A. II. Donnan, near Tazewell, came near
being bitten by a mad dog. or one supposed to be
mad, a few days ago.
Measles and roseola seem to be prevalent all
over the country. Several in Buena Vista ha
had the latter the past week.
