ceived yesterday the following reports from the
various points, showing the condition of the eotr
ton crop:
Austin, Texas.—The crop in this section will
likely equal last yenr. Cotton is shedding badly.
The drought has done serious injury.
Houston, Texas. -The weather continues un
favorable. The drought is doing harm. Cotton

Yesterday while Policeman Johnson was tak
ing Tom Richardson, colored, to jail to serve out
a ten days* sentence for disorderly conduct, Rich
ardson took to his heels and attempted to escape.
The officer, in pursuing him, fell into a ditch, hut
soon recovered himself, drew liis revolver and
commanded tlu* fugitive to halt. Richardson
obeyed the command and quietly surrendered
himself, and was taken to jail. j

Capi. Murcrum, of tile steamer H-iys, in a con
versation with the editor ofthe Times a few days
ago, said that his company stood ready to carry
the mail once a week from this point to Chatta- ,
hoochee and that the line was now waiting further
developments. He further stated that the Hays 1
would not Agree to take tlu* mail if she had to be
confined to a prompt schedule, as there were oc
casions when the boat could not make schedule
time. lie did not, however, object to being con
fined to within a few hours of tlu* schedule time. ,
This is about as good as we can do, and the
Times advises the acceptance of the proposition.

A telegram receive,! from Humesville brings ,
the sad news that Mr. Madison Wisdom was |
killed by lightning yesicrday afternoon, at 2
o’clock while standing in the yard. Mr. W. left i

a visit to his grandfather, Mr. J. E, Ridgway. |
Miss Annie Ridgway accompanied him to
his Rome, and it was only a few hours |
alter they arrived in Barnosville before the I
awftil accident occurred. Mr. W. was about
seventeen years of age, ftill of promise, and a
bright future lay before him. Mis recent and
pleasant visit to his many friends in this county
causes deeper sadness at his sudden death. :
