Upon one occasion the writer hud the
opportunity of studying the superstitious
proclivities of a great Newfoundland dog
whose chances of association with chil
dren had been very limited. With some
visitors to his house came n child witn u
doll large enough for the dog to take in
the human characteristics of its head und
face, surmounting the dress in their
proper order and proportion. This, united
with such fairy-like dimensions, consti
tuted a mystery too profound for the
mental penetration of Iiruiu. He was de
lighted with the association of the child,
as it was the first of its kind with whom
lie was on terms of intimate acquaintance.
He would follow her about everywhere
and lavish upon tier the most friendly at
tentions; but the doli, “none of it in mine,
thank you,” and he was always careful to
keep on that side of his little l'riend furth

actions, the writer took the doll and ad

with the utmost precipitation, but llnully

ing his retreat out off, he made a dash past
the doll with an energy which could not
have been more desperate if his life hud
been at stake. But the most comicui purt
«>f the circus was the pretense he made of
not being frightened. As soon us lie se
cured an open line of retreat he would
take up a position at u respectful
distance and skip and caper and
bark in n manner which clearly indicated:
“ffho's afraid ? If there is any dog in this

To see ourselves as itliers see us.
A farmer was greatly annoyed by his
neighbor’s pig getting into his potato field
and harvesting oil hisown account. When
ever he drove the aggressor out, he was
forced to lay down a panel of the snake-
fence, as bacon in the conscious state is al
ways careful never to betrny the place
where it enters a bonanza by going out
there, unless it is very linrd pressed by
dogs. The farmer had diligently searched
for a detect in tlie fence, and tailed to find
one where the pig eould, by any possibili
ty, enter; so he concluded to watch, and
■soot had the satifaction of seeing the thief
«nter the end of a crooked hollow log
which mnde a part of the fence; one end
being in his held and one in that of his
neighbor. After driving the burglar out,
he changed the position ol the log, so that
both ends were in his neighbor's field,
•nod concluded to watch the
result. Soon the pig came along, nnd
went through tlie log, as usual; but upon
searching for potatoes he found only pm -
ture grass, and after some little delay he
seemed to arrive at the conclusion that In-
had not gone through the log at all, so he
went through again, and upon emerging
into the pasture-field seemed more mysti
fied than ever; hut after a m ire protracted
search for the potatoes titan bufoie e
seemed to com.tale that owing to some
blunder of his own lie hail not really gone
through the log, so in he went again and
out iiuo the pasture-field, but this time he
stood still as a statue for about half a min
ute, ami slowly the bristles began to stand
■erect along his buck, and with two or three
tremendous snill's he set olf at the top of
his speed for the house of his owner, and
never afterward could be induced to ap
proach that part of the pasture-field.
A gentleman who is now, us the old
Greeks would say, with the gods, pledged
his veracity upon the followi ng statement:
-“When a youth on my father’s farm near
the boundary of Canada und Vermont I
owned a young mare which I called Kitty;
she was black its jet. Upon the occasion
of a social gathering of young people at a
neighbor’s some fourteen miles off, 1 rode
there on this favorite colt. When the
party broke ]up toward midnight und
friends advised me to take the roundabout
way home, as the short cut led through the
glen, where the headless ghost of a British
officer, said to have been killed by a can
non shot in some frontier encounter, was
in the habit of appearing. 1 laughed at
their fears ami took the short cut home.
The night was dark and shadows of the
trees made the glen darker. Just as 1 got
to the spot where the ghost was said to
appear tlie colt stopped- from
the canter so suddenly, by ,
bracing her fore feet that she !
almost threw me over her head, which
made me show some temper in endeavor
ing to force her past, but she would not go.
After fruitlessly struggling with her Tor
some time 1 concluded to ride back u little
tv t v ■ :d get her over lu-r fright, then turn ;
a nd go nome, hut she did the same thing
the second time and at the same s|ot..
Again I rode back, but this time eould
hardly hold her from running away, a ,d 1
had great difficulty in turning her head
homeward this third time, but finally got I
her started and then put her to Ik-1- speed.
In order to give her no time to bulk 1
struck her sharply with the whip just at
the dreaded pomt, and it seemed to me
that at a single bound we went fifty feet
through the air, and then she went like
the wind. 1 eould not hold her in. When
we got home she was teeming with
perspiration and trembling like a
leaf. 1 put her in the stable, nibbed
and covered her with blankets
m *>, I * , i ler front taking
cold; then I stole to my room through the
book door, so that my father would not
know how late 1 hud been out. In the
morning I was startled out of mv sleep bv
the old gentleman standing at niy bedside
and wrathfully demanding why 1 had
traded Kitty oil without Tiis permission ^
and, upon my declaring that 1 had not he
ordered me to come to the stable
whether 1 had ov not.
nail Times-Star. Gessner was in Canton,
at the prohibition 'convention, and stated
Unit Francis Murphy was employed by tne
republican party to keep temperance men
from going into the prohibition party.
Gessner said he knew this was true, be
cause he was a member of the executive
board of the republican party of Cincin
nati. Murphy was a good deal rattled in
his Youngstown speech, but he uuaoubt-
edly showed himself in his true light. He
can now travel on temperance in the in
terest of Francis Murphy and the republi
can party, with the gospel love und charity
features thrown aside, as they were at
Youngstown.”
