The residence of United States Marshal
Nelms, at Smyrna, Cobb county, was de
stroyed by fire Saturday night.
At Jasper, Henry Mullinax and Lum Ray
were intoxicated and in the act of lighting,
when Joseph M. Watkins stepped between
as a peacemaker, and was stabbed in ids
arm, near his shoulder, by Mullinax, and
bled to death before a physician could get
there.
The subject of having a big military en
campment in Rome during the coming
summer is just now agitating her people.
It is intended to have an encampment of
the entire volunteer force of the state,
either beginning or culminating with a
grand fourth of July celebration.
A peddler named Murphy met with a seri
ous accidental J. K. Clarke & Co.’s mill, in
Tatmill county. He was riding on an engine
nttached to a freight train, and attempted
to jump off while the train was in motion.
He slipped and fell to the ground, break
ing both legs and arms, and otherwise
bruising himself.
Captain Wheaton and Mr. Lamar have
completed their bonds as collector and
postmaster at Savannah, and forwarded
the same to Washington.
Marmaduke Hamilton has been appoint
ed deputy postmaster at Savannah.
A white man, named Murphy, from the
lower part of Troup county, was taken to
LaGrange on Saturday and committed to
jail charged with rape on his thirteen-year-
old daughter. Strong threats of lynching
are made.
Mayor Felder, of Americus, who stabbed
Dr. Burt, has been required to give bond
in the sum of $1000.
Mr. Pleasant A. Stovall, formerly of the
Augusta Chronicle, has purchased a half
interest in the Athens Banner-Watchman
and with Col. T. L. Gantt, will hereafter
have charge of the active management of
that spicy daily.
A charter for the Madison and Eatonton
railroad has been granted under the gene
ral state law regulating the granting of
such charters. The proposed line is to
connect the towns of Eatonton and Madi
son.
The Western and Atlantic railroad has
just purchased of Mr. J. V. Motter, the
Atlanta agent ol thelthode Island locomo
tive works, three forty-three ton, ten whet 1
engines, strictly first-class in every respect.
They will be delivered and placed on the
road in November.
Captain Newman has taken the oath of
office as United States district judge for
the northern district of Georgia.
Mr. Mat Black, while at work at a
planing machine Friday in L. Black &
Son’s planing mill at Marietta, was striuk
by a piece of wood thrown from the planer,
which run through his thigh. The piece
Was about one inch square and about three
feet long. Twelve inches stuck into the

It is said that Hon. Chambers MeAdory,
of Jonesboro, has purchased St. Clair
Springs for $20,000, and will make it the
leading resort of Alabama.

Sam Johnson, the negro boy who thrust
a knife blade deep into his father's breast
at Madison, some weeks since, has been
released on a $350 bond, his father being
one of the bondsmen. The wound is about
healed, and but little inconvenience is felt
from it.
The Florida Baptist association will meet
this year on Thursday before the first Sun
day in October, at Harmony Grove, twelve

though a very serious one. He was re
moved to his home, and his friends telt
certain they would see him out again in a

Friday night. Mr. Black was a young man
who possessed many friends, and was re
cently married.
Fled Schmidt, who has been in the em
ploy of the Ridge Valley Iron Company,
and also postmaster and agent of the East
Tennessee road at Hermitage, eight miles
from Rome, mysteriously disappeared
Tuesday evening and has not since been
heard from. Schmidt went to Rome Tues
day evening, and about 7:30 o’clock in
formed one of the merchants that he was
going to Ordcll, a few miles from Cave
Springs, on business. Not returning home,
his wife became uneasy and sent to Rome
to ascertain if he was there, but so far
nothing has been heard from him, and he
has not been in Ordell. His wife says
Schmidt had $200 or $300 when be left home.
