He took me in from head to foot.”
But sometimes, after taking a squ ire

Mr. Cleveland was governor Col. Lament

constant lookout to prevent him from
being imposed on. If a man had an im

apparently frank manner, he would be cer

wholly without influence at home, and of
no real account. Colonel Lainont, who
sat behind the governor, had a very active
and complete knowledge of all the leadin'*
men of the state. He was too much of a
diplomat to ever contrudict the governor
or interfere with him in his first ecstaey of
discovery. The way he would take to en
lighten Mr. Cleveland wouid be through
indirection. The next time the lieu
tenant governor would happen in
the office Colonel Lnmont would call
out to him and announce that so
and so was in town, giving the name of Mr.
Cleveland’s latest favorite visitor. Then
Mr. Hill would respond by saying: "I won
der how he got enough money to get to
Albany,” and then would go on and give
an exact valuation of the man socially and
politically. Mr. Cleveland would pretend
not to listen, but it was noted that after
such a conversation had taken place in his
presence he always refused to see his new
discovery the next time he called. The

The editor of the Blue Knob Eagle came
to town the other duy purposely to make
the acquaintance of the editor of the Daily
Advocate, Colonel Brooks. Brooks had
copied so many items from the Eagle that
the editor of that sheet knew that lie
would be a welcome guest. When he en
tered the office of the great daily, instead
of introducing himself to the editor, he sat
down carelessly, chuckling inwardly at
the surprise which he would create. After
awhile he said:
“I see that you copy a great deal from
the Blue Knob Eagle.'’
“Yes.”
“Rather like its matter, eh?”
“Oh, it doesn’t amount to much. You
see I copy it because the Eagle has so little
circulation that no one has seen its stuff,
which is consequently new when I get it.
If the paper had any circulation I wouldn’t
clip a line from it.”
