DAILY ENQUIRER • SUN: COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, THURSDAY MORNING, DECEMBER 30, \m
Caught on a fonrrntehrr.
'Chattanooga Times.
,.^, h . e cannon-ball train on the Georgia
0t i tbe .? ast Tennessee, Virginia
and Georgia railway was late yesterday
?“fhrt.thundering speed from Atlanta
to this city. As the train swept round a
curve into a cut near Ooltewah Junction,
fifteen miles east of Chattanooga, an enor-
Ttr* U w a iw p agl . e was seen on the track by
, r ,VFortune, the fireman, who was
at the moment peering through the for-
ward window of the cab. The pilot was
h?J? ..?^Li e8 Ji li u P , before he could rise,struck
him, tumbled him uo on the frame, where
he clutched a wooden beam with one of
his great claws and held fast.
Before the bird had time to recover
‘ he . fr‘?ht and shock of his
collision with the cowcatcher. Fortune
had climbed along the footway to the pilot
and was upon the noble emblem of Ameri
can liberty, when a lively tussle ensued.
The eagle fought viciously for his liberty,
and the fireman was equally determined
on making him his prisoner. The train
was running at the rate of forty-five miles
•an hour. The man had to hold by one
hand with all his power to one of the iron
guards below the headlight to keep his foot
ing, as the engine swayed from side to side
and bounded over the inequalities of the
track in its headlong race against time,
and manage the eagle with the other.
But his birdship was finally secured,
after he had nearly torn Mr. For
tune’s overalls to shreds with his powerful
talons, that are fully four inches long.
He wus carried back over the footway
fighting like a demon. Onee in the cab,
Engineer Parks went to Fortune’s aid, and
by hard work they succeeded in tying the
’king of the upper ether” securely,
though their task was no easy one, as
the eagle fought savagely with beak
and claws as one of his captors
was within reach. When tired he
was spread out on the cab floor and found
to meusure seven feet from tip to tip of the
wings. He stands fully two feet high
when fully erect, and is altogether a splen
did specimen of the monarch of American
birds. He was sold to Sam R. Read, of the
Read House, for $12.50. This is probably
the first instance of the capture of an eagle
by a railway train, and Mr. Fortune’s ex
ploit in securing the gallant fellow clearly
entitles him to rank as a man of great
presence of mind and rare grit.

Big Checks.
When Jay Gould scribbled off a check
for $1,500,000 to pay Tom Allen for the
Iron Road it was thought to be the largest
individual check ever written. Gould wrote
it on a sheet of note paper. John B. Allen
once dashed off a check for $400,000 and
gave it to Senator Dorsey for a half interest
in the senator’s cattle ranch. There are
several United States government checks
for one cent, to square up accounts, in
existence.—New York Sun.
balls. The Georgians formed and prepar
ed to make the attack by crossing the
branch. There were 10,000 men on
each side, and the scene was very
imposing. As soon os the Geor
gians crossed the branch they met
a terrible fusllade from the Tennesseeans,
who were at home in the snow. The com
mander of the Tennesseeans was captured,
but a bold dash was made by the Tennes
seeans and ho was rescued. The Georgians
and South Carolinians, being unused to the
8gow, were at a great disadvantage, and
were forced back across the branch. As
the Tennesseeans crossed the branch they
wet their snowballs, and the next volley
fired at the Georgia and Carolina boys was
terrible in its effect. Passing on the Ten
nesseeans captvfred the quarters and pro
ceeded to loot the whole shebang, carrying
off rations, tobacco, pipes, and everything
else that did not belong to the government.

advice to Mothers.—Mrs. Winslow’s
Soothing Syrup should always be used
when children are cutting teeth. It re
lieves the little sufferer at once; it produces
natural, quiet sleep by relieving the child
from pain, and the little cherub awakes as
* ‘bright as a button.” It is very pleasant
to taste. It soothes the child, softens the
gums, allays all pain, relieves wind, regu
lates the bowels and is the best known
remedy for diarrhoea, whether arising
•from teething or other causes. Twenty-

Killed the Rill.
“What’s become of the clerk you used to
have?” asked a traveler of an Iowa drug
gist.
“Had to let him go.”
“What was the matter? Didn’t he fill
the bill?”
“Yes, he di ; that was just the trouble.
His brother Bill was the hardest drinker
in the county, and he undertook to fill him
and keep him full. He came pretty near
ruining the drug business in this town.”—

Free Trade.
The reduction of internal revenue and
the taking off of revenne stamps from Pro
prietary Medicines, no doubt has largely
benefited the consumers,as well as relieving
the burden of home manufacturers. Es
pecially is this the case with Green’s Au
gust Flower and Boschee’s German Syrup,
as the reduction of thirty-six cents per
dozen, has been added to increase the size
of the bottles containing these remedies,
thereby giving one-fifth more medicine in
the 75 cents size. The August Flower for
Dyspepsia and Liver Complaint, and the
German Syrup for Cough and Lung trou
bles, have perhaps, the largest sale ot any
medicines in the world. The advantage of
increased size of the bottles will be greatly
appreciated by the sick and afflicted, in
every town and village in civilized coun
tries. Sample bottles for 10 cents remain
the same size. octl2 d&wly

DYSPEPSIA
Up to a few weeks ago I considered my
self the champion Dyspeptic of America.
During the years that 1 have been afflicted
I have tried almost everything claimed to
be a specific for Dyspepsia in the hope of
finding something that would afford per
manent relief. I had about made up my
mind to abandon all medicines when I no
ticed an endorsement of Simmons Liver
Regulator by a prominent Georgian, a
jurist whom I knew, and concluded to try
its effects in my ease. I have used but
two bottles, and am satisfied that l have
struck the right tiling at last. I felt its
beneficial effects almost immediately.
Unlike all other preparations of a similar
kind, no special Instructions are required
as to what one shall or shall not. oat. This
fact alone ought to commend it to all
troubled with Dyspepsia.
