A Stubbing Affray.
Last week a negro named Will Ilollcy serious
ly cut a young white man by the name of Prather
with a knife. An attempt was made to arrest
Holley, but lie made a vigorous fight for liberty.
In the melee he was shot but succeeded iu
making his escape.
A warrant was sworn out before Justice Gor
man, and Holley was finally arrested on Sunday
last by J. M. Johnson, constable bent 3.
Holley is now in jail, and is in a critical condi
tion from the effects of his wound. Should he
recover he will be tried before Justice Gorman
for assault with intent to kill.
From the facts, as far as we can ascertain them,
Holley’s attack upon Mr. Prather was malicious
and uncalled for, and no sympathy need be
wasted upon him. —Opelika Times.

For Engagement Rings.
The ancients attributed marvelous properties
to many of the precious stones besides the opals.
A particular stone was regarded us sacred to
each month of the year, a meaning or languuge
was given to each, and it was supposed that
good luck and prosperity would be insured to
those who wore constantly the stone belonging
to tlic month in which they were born. It is
stiil customary among lovers ami friends to no
tice the significance attached to the var.ous
stones in making birthday, engagement uml wed
ding presents.
The r.toties are sacred to the different mont hs
and th* language of each is as follows:
January, gurnet; constancy and fidelity in
every engagement.
Febrtlury, amethyst; a preventive against vio
lent passions.
March, bloodstone; courage, wisdom, and thin
ness in affliction.
April, diamond; denotes faith, innocence, and
virginity.
May, emerald; discovers false friends, and in
sures true love.
June, agate; insures long life, health and pros
perity.
July, ruby; discovers poisons and corrects evils
resulting from mistaken friendship.
August, sardonyx; insures conjugal felicity.
September, sapphire; frees from enchantment
and denotes repentance.
October, opal; denotes hope, and sharpens the
sight and until of the possessor.
November, topaz; fidelity and friendship, and
prevents bad dreams.
December, turquoise; gives success, especially
iu love.
Among other stones the moonstone protects
from harm and danger: the heliotrope or blood
stone enables one to walk invisible; the pearl is
an emblem of purity, and gives e’earness to
mental and physical sight; and the cat’s-eye en
riches the wearer.
