yS**-Tstivo Warun.”— Every one acquainted with
the genial and kind-hearted recently elected city
bridge keeper, knows that, though the imperson
ation of good humor, he is pretty much of a man
when aroused, and is about tha last one to **back
down/* when fairly and squarely into a fight.
But, notwithstanding his well established repu
tation for courage, Mr. C was observed to
"lake water** rather fiuddcnly oa Friday last, in
a little muss he got into with a couple of Ifilesi*
ana The cause of the difficulty was about this:
During the building of the city bridge, a flat
toteing used for ferriage purposes, aad Mr.
bus a wan employed to attend to it. On Friday
lant, in his eisit to the river, and when nesring
the bank.hc observed a couple of Irishmen maul
ing bis employee, ending with pitching him in
to the river. Apart from hie interest.in the man,
the natural Instincts of Mr. C., prompted him to
take the part of the weaker side in ibis "double*
teaming*' process; land '‘pealing'’ his coat, he
started in a brisk trot, picking up a pretty stout
•tick on the wing—determined to "fight the dev
il with fire;** or, in other words, meet the 'Greek**
with their national weapon, the shilejah. Wheth
er our stout friend had given himself too much
impetus In his run down bill, or a shove from
one of the Irishmen, administerd at the oppor
tune moment, was the propelling force, we know
not, but Mr. C., found bimself "taking water"
in ratberan unceremonious manner. Scramb
ling op the bank, still retaining a hold of his
•tick, Mr. (L, "let in" on the Irishmen rather
heavior than was healthy, and completely routed
them—using one of therm up pretty severely.
Meanwhile the ferrymen had ewam out; when
mutnal explanations took place, the affair ended
with no one being "kilt lotirely"— one of the
Irishmen remarking, that he always "considered

Mat on’s Court.—A few cases were disposed of
by nit Honor yesterday:
John Gatlin made a clean "chill" of having
"taken in out of th wet" some fire chickens be
longing to a citisen. Perhaps ha thought the
peor things were ■ uttering out in the cold, and
deeded "bagging" to keep them warm; at any
cate, though there was nary feather sticking to
i»im when caught in indulgence in thisyeuf pro
ceeding, he stuck to the truth, and as reward for
his candor, was presented with a massive token
•of tho Mayor's regards in shape of a chain with
a heavy appendage at tha end, with which to
amuse pimself through the Christmas festivities
.and for two weeke thereafter.
Adolphus Wright departed so far from the
right path as to be caught with a bag of corn
about daylight, officer Corcoran. He told a
pretty plausible tale about buying the maise from
a government teamster for a dollar. Bat the

the tune of $5 snd cost, with an admonition to
leave the wtaixy paths of pilfering, have nothing
to do with "corn*—solid or^lquid—but to "raise”
the cereal in a legitimate manner.
Sidney Cannon—though not exact!y£a big^gun
—was "reported" as having'gone off half-cocked :
In other words "discharging** the butt-end of a
brickbat through one of tho street gas lamps.—
[Wa consider him in bad luck, as he might throw
bricks through any three out of fivo frames, in
certain portions of the city without cracking a
glass.] But, not wishing to be gassy over the
affair, he was let off on payment of 810 and costs.
Abraham—A vanerable colored father in Is
rael—was up, with a couple of degenerate molas
ses-colored youths, for participating in a little
cotton speculation. It seems the ancient darkey
was employed in some capacity about one of our
cotton presses, and allowed the boys, Henry and
Caesar to fill their sacks whenever occasion of
fered. The cotton thus stolen, was conveyed to
some white man’s premises—he giving the boys
receipts for the number of pounds brought—and
the ancient colored "indivfd” dividing the cash
when it ran np into dollars, with his youthful
confederates. The Mayor considered it a clear
case of unlicensed trading, and gave the trio the
choice of twenty days* sumptuous entertainment

Heaveaspeedily send the day when these swarms
of Egyptian locusts—breeding death and desola
tion— may be scattered, end our citizens onee
more breath# a pure and untainte 1 atmosphere.
But, as we have said, the freedman will soon
be convinced of the fallaciousness of his Utopian
dreams, acd with tha awakening will come the
thought of the comforts and joys that he one#
possessed. Memories of the "old plantation**
and the kind and thoughtful master or mistress
—visions of "hog and hotnony"—will once more
poetess his heart and head—and his every effort
will be strained to be onee more in the possession
of these lost joys. Tho negro is a creature of im
pulse—he acts on the spur of the moment—and
fet him fully realize that he can and will not ob
tain anything from the Government beyond what
he has already received—his freedom—and soon
the roads and highways wili resound with the
tramp of returning prodigals. Should such be
the case, we trust they will be received with
kindness and sympathy by their former mas
ters, and just and mutually beneficial contracts
made with them. Let this be done, snd all fears
in regard t© another cotton crop will vanish, and
•ro tho summer wanes, the broad fields of the
South will whiten with the silvery fleece—giving
assurance of comfort and solid prosperity to a
now impoverished people.

Look ocT, Dots.—A notice will be found else
where from the Mayor, and the police specially
entrustcd[witb the enforcement of the ordinance,
in regard to tho discharging of fire-arms and th e
burning of fire-crackers and rockata within the
corporate limits. The section reads thus:
"It shall not be lawful for any person to fire
a gun, pistol, or any other fire-arm within three
hundred yards of any house, except in ease of
military parade; nor shall any person burn rock
ets, craekers, or any kind of fire-works within
tho limits of the city. Any person so offending
shall be fined in a sum not exceeding twenty
dollars."
Now, in regard to the enforcement of thisordi-
nance, and the preventing of these things being
done on tho public streets, we think the ordi
nance should be strictly carried out; but we
do think the boys should be allowed the privil
ege of burning powder in its various forms, with-,
in the homo enclosures. . Wo mean, though, only
in such neighborhoods as are free from the pres
ence of cotton. We know that the juveniles are
anticipating having a nice time, and in view of
their four yefirs* deprivation of this pleasure, we
should like to see tho law stretched just a little,
and hoys allowed to Indulge within the bounds
of moderation. What say you, Mr. Mayor?

being agitated by the residents of that quiet
little suburban village, and that tho proposed
incorporation meets with the approval of a ma

successful issuo of the project with pleasure, and
trust the incorporation will be speedily accom

ceive the views of those direetly interested in
the matter.
