PAINLESS DIGESTION.
“No man,” says Sir Astloy Cooper, “ought to know
by bia sensationa that ho has a stomach.” In other
words, when digestion is perfect tlicro is neither
pain nor uneasiness in tho region whoro it takes
pltco. Nausea, want of appetite, fiatnlcncy, op
pression after eating, shooting pains in tho epigas
trium, a flushing of tho faco at meal times, and a
furred tonguod in tho morning, aro among tho diroct
symptoms of indigestion. Constipation, bilious,
ness, licadacho, nervous irritation, physical weak
ness, and low spirits, aro its almost invariable ac-
co’JJ auiments. All tbeso indications of dyspepsia,
whother lmmodiato or secondary, aro usually aggra
vated by hot weather.
Tho Close of summer is tliorcforo tho season when
tho victim of dyspepsia most urgently needs a tonic
and regulating medicine. Of conrso, every invalid
lias many advisers. Ono friend recommends ono
drag, anothor another; lrnt in a multitndo of coun
sellors tlicro is not always safety. Tho standard
remedy of tho presont ago for indigestion, in oil its
stages, is IIOSTETTF.R'S STOMACn BETTERS.
Time, that proves all things, has established its rep
utation on an imprognablo foundation,—tho sponta
neous testimony of millions of intelligent witnesses.
No acid oil or add defiles is its stimulating principle;
its tonio constituents aro tho finest that botanical
research has yot discovered; it combines tho prop
erties of a gentle ovacuant, a blood depnrent, and
an anti-bilions medicine, with invigorating <]nalities
of tho highest order, and is admit tod by tho pnblic
and tho profession to bo tho surest protection
against all tiro cases that aro prodncod orpropagatod
by pcstiforons air or unwholesome water, that has
ovor been usod either in tho United States or Tropi
cal America.
In cases of constipation resulting from a want of
mnscnlar tone in tho intestines, tho effect of tho
BITTERS is perfoctly marvellous; and williont tho
dangerous sequences of mercury, it restores tho dis
ordered liver to a normal condition,

Tho host teats of tho merits of my proprietary
irtielo is to ascertain what is thought of it at home

bo favorite remedy for chills and fever, dumb ague

vegetable preparation free from deleterious drugs,
and acts as a tonic upon the entire system, thereby

The second Bal Masque of tho season came off at
this fashionable watering place on Tuesday night
last, at the McIntosh Honso and was largely attend
ed : only a portion of those in attendance, however,
wero in mask or fancy costume : perhaps thirty or
forty appeared in as many different characters—
some of which were happily chosen and admirably
Rnstained.
Mr. King, of Savannah, appeared aa Bill .Sykes,
while his accomplished wife took tho character of a
ballet dancer, and so graceful and sprightly were her
movements, that no ono dreamed of her being other
than a girl of fourteen.
Miss B , of Macon, as Titania, and Miss Col
lier, as the Lady of tho Lake, personated the char
acters admirably, wliilo Miss L , as tho “ Un
known,” and Miss L. Thnrman. as a Sister of Chari
ty. wore observed with great interest when tho time
arrived to unmask.
The sweet, spiritunl faco and heavenly bine
eyes of this quiet yonng creatnro eminently fitted
her to sustain the character of a nun, more so,
after nnmasking tlian before.
Atlanta was represented by Miss C .as a Flower
Girl, whose graceful dancing was very much admired.
Another most interesting character was that of
Mag Wildfire, personated by the accomplished Miss
H , of Butts.
The foregoing is a portion of a letter received yes
terday, and we regret that wo havo not the. space
for the wholo of it. It closes by saying the affair
at the Spring on Tuesday night was a brilliant suc
cess and all present had tho happiest and most
pleasant timo imaginable.
A Novel way to Swindle There was a rather
novel case before ono of tho city magistrates a day
or two since, which resulted in tho prosecutor
being bound over to tlio next torm of tlio Superior
Court under a charge of subornation of perjury. It
appears that a negro man brought suit against a
white man for adultciy, in that tho white man had
induced tho wife of the negro to desert him, and
was Jiving illicitly with hor. Several witnesses sub
stantiated tho charge, bnt in such a confused and
bungling manner as to aronso suspicion; and before
tlio investigation of tho case closed, it leaked ont
that tho negro had snbomed tlio witnesses of tlio
prosecution, and tliat tho suit bad boon bronght for
no reason, whatever, other than to induce tho de
fendant to pay tlio prosecutor a sum of money to
drop tho matter and suppress its publicity.
This is not tho first or second caso of a similar
natnro which has been before onr magistrates'
courts, and which havo rcsnltod more favorably to
tho prosecution than this one; bnt wo aro glad to
notice that this disreputable and infamous modo of
obtaining monoy is abont to bo exploded.
Those Prizes.—Tho several largo prizes in gold
coin, recently announced by Mr. Huff, and which aro
to ho contended for by tlio velocipede exports of
tills and, perhaps, other States, has produced quite
a sensation hero and elsewhere among bicyclists.
Tlio prizes amount to $275 dollars in gold, $100 of
which is within reach of tho fastest rider. Such a
prize is not to bo snoozed at, and already several
yonng gents of tlio dty aro in daily training for tho
contest to come off somo day daring Fair week, in
November next.
The contest will ho ono of tho most exciting and
interesting features, in the way of amusement, wo
shall havo at tho Fair, and tho prizes aro tho most
liberal and valnahlo that will ho awarded daring tho
groat exhibition. Huff nover docs anything by
halves, or in an indifferent and lake-warm stylo.
When ho goes for a thing, ho Is in earnest and goes
it with a vfm, hence liis groat success and popnlari
ty. ’Itali for Huff!
More or the Same Sort.—Several negro women
in thia section are bringing suits at law for the re
covery of property willed to them by their old own
ers and masters. Wo noticed tho other day a rath
er heavy transaction of this sort, in regard to the
will of Wm. Zoiglor, and wo havo now to nollco a
similar caso, in Jones enmity, whero a white man,
sinco tho emancipation of slavery, had been keep
ing a colored woman and former slave, and at his
death, which occurred recently, willed to tho woman
his farm, containing somo threo hundred acres of
valnahlo land; no died leaving her in possession
of tho property; bnt wo understand that tho broth
er of tho deceased has instituted suit against tho
woman for the recovery of tho property. ^Yo know
nothing of tho merits of tho caso bnt tho foregoing
presents somo of its main features.

New Oottox.—Tlio now cotton crop is now being
hurried to market with all possiblo dispatch. Tho
lino prico which tho staple is commanding is cnongh
to accolerato tho labor of pickers, and should pres
ont prices ho maintained, wo may expect almost
every boll to appear in market within ten days after
oponing.
Tlio crop of Georgia, judging from recent per
sonal observations in, and reports from tlio host
cotton regions in tho State, will fall vastly short of
tho calculations mado a month sinco, and if it does,
wo may not reasonably look for a heavy doelino in
prico, nor do wo beliovosnch will tako plaoo. Thirty
conts per pound leaves a heavy dividend in tlio
hands of tlio producer, and if tho prico stands at
that figure, wo would not care to boo tlio wholo of
tho Georgia cotton crop in market tonlay.
