/. furs 1 < legruph : This delightful summer
resort is sitnnted in a bchutifnl valloy in Green
brier county, on tho -western slope of the Allo-
gehnny Mountains, and is now in West Virginia.
TTie charming scenery of the surrounding moun
tains, tho invigorating atmosphere, and the
pleasant climato will always make this place a
favorite resort. Tho Spring is a bold fountain
bursting from tho base of tho mountain, strong
ly impregnated with sulphur, and is very simi
lar to onr Indian Spring water though perhaps
somewhat stronger of sulphur,
Tho grounds aro tastefully arranged and tho
grany slopes and the winding wbIIch with tho
ranges of handsome cottages aro beautiful and
attractive. Tho Hotel in the center of tho
grounds, is three stories high besides tho tiase-
-^uent. Tho ball-room occupies one end of tho
building and the parlor the other, while tho
dining room, capable of seating comfortably,
one thousand guests, is between these rooms.
There aro in tho Hotel and cottages about seven
hundred rooms all of which, last wcclc, woro
foil to overflowing; whilo tho floors of tho par
lor wero covered with mntrasses, tho billiard
room was full and the church was full.
The company here assembled is tho finest
collection of pooplo I over saw at any watering
place. Every part of tho Sonth and West is
well represented, and so aro New York, Phila
delphia, Chicago and Baltimore. Maryland and
Virginia of courso are more largely represented
than any other States, but nmong all tho vast
assemblage there are, so far as I know, nono
from Now England. In tho evening nnd after
each moal tho parlor is crowded with visitors.
Here General Leo may bo seen quietly ming
ling with tho company, now walking with a
lady and now conversing with a gentleman.—
General Beauregard is also a constant visitor of
tho parlor and bnll-room, and being n widower
is very nttentivo to tho ladies. Besidos these
distinguished Generals thro may bo seen Com
modore Mnnry, Col. Mosby, Gov. Wise, Gov.
Aiken, of South Carolina, Gov. Weller, of Cali
fornia, Clymor, of Pennsylvania, Corcoran, tho
Washington Banker, nnd nny number of Con
federate Genorals, Colonels, and distinguished
^ men from all parts of tho country.
Among tho ladies, there are many very pretty
girls, and handsomo matrons, nnd the quantity
of fine drossos nnd jewelry seems almost fabu
lous in thoso times of desolation nnd reconstruc
tion. Of tho belles, Chicngo, Memphis, Louis
ville, Lynchburg nnd Baltimore, each furnished
one or more marked for beauty and intelligence.
It would not bo proper for mo to follow tho bad
example of Northern papers and mention names;
beside* it would bo invidious, nnd, if your cor
respondent woro not ho obscure, it might bo dnn-
Rerou^ I may be nllowed to add that Savannah,
Angnata, Macon nnd Atlanta have all contribu
ted to swell tho tido of wit and beauty.
Mr. Goorgo Peabody, llio American philan-
fmphist, in Loro, but his health is feeble and ho
baa boon in tho parlor only onco, then ho was
cjnito ovorcomo with fntiguo, nnd being unablo
to walk to bis cabin, was convoyed in a sedan
chair by two servants, whiio General Leo, Gov.
Aiken nnd Mr. Corcoran, tho bnnker, walked by
his side. This escort, altogether unpremedita
ted, was a singular combination—tho distin
guished Gonoral, tho distinguished ^ represent a-
r.vo of tho Southern planters, and a distinguished
Banker. By tho way, Mr. Peabody, as a mark
of his respoct for Gonoral Loo, has mndo a hand
some donation to Washington College. Tho do
nation consists of sixty thousand dollars in Vir
ginia Stato Bonds which woro lost in a ship in
tho Atlantic ocean, nnd is not now available;
bnt tho claim is a valid subsisting debt, and will
donbtless bo oventnally recognized and paid.
Tho Ohio nnd Chesapeake Railroad, formerly
known aB tho Virginia Central road, lias been
completed ns far as this place, a distance of
about two hundred miles from Richmond. It is
designed at some future day to extend it to tho
Ohio river, hut it will for tho present stop at
Lewisbnrg, tho county-Rito of this county. In
passing from Charlottesville to this point, tho
scenery la grand boyond description. We find
ourselves gradually climbing tho ascent of tho
Rlno Ridgo, with tho tali mountain on one side
and tho beautifully variegated valley on tlio
other—now flitting through a dark tunnel, and
now in mid air, spanning a high bridge, until
we reach tho Valloy of Virginia, in which is sit
uated tho beautiful town of Staunton. Soon
after leaving Staunton, wo enter tho Alleghany
Range, and tho mind is stnggorrod at tho im-
£ mensity of tho undertaking to build a road over
these mountains. The longest tunnel is about
one milo long, and at one point is said to be four
hundred feet below tho surface. Whilo making
the ascent of this mountain, thero wero at ono
timo threo locomotives attached to tho train, ono
at each ond and ono in tho middle, all puffing
and straining to movo tho immense weight.

OBOWTH OF NEW YORK.
With the increasing population of New York
the city is necessarily extending its limits, and
ana lying anywhere in reaching distance is com-
"landing fabulous prices. On the North river
side tho Jersey salt marshes, which, not manv
years ago were considered worthless, have been
drained; artificial bottoms made and elegant
windings erected. Commnnipaw Bay, next to
™y« being filled up by some company
chartered for that purpose, in order to make
land for building purposes, and so rapidly is the
city growing that many foreseeing men look
forward to the time in a few years when New
York and Newark, N. J., will meet each other
m their growth over the seven or eight miles
that now lie l>etween them. JSFous terron9.

CENTRAL PARK.
The boast and pride of New Yorkers is as yet
in its infancy, having only a growth of ten years;
bnt, as young as it is, it is large enough to defy
all description of your correspondent, unless he
should spend a week or two there and have all
yonr columns for several issues. The object of
greatest interest there is tho Croton Reservoir,
containing one hundred and six acres of water
about forty-two feet deep, which distributes the
lifo current through the great city. The circum
ference of tho Park is about eight miles, and it
is intersected in every direction by beautiful
roada for carriages, oqnestrians and foot passen
gers—the footways, particularly, are admirable,
being constructed of a compound of sand and
tar, nnd are quite smooth and elastic. Through
out the Park aro thousands of delicious cozy
little retreats for lover, which find constant use
—your correspondent speaking entirely from the
experience of others, of course. Saturdays tho
Park Commissioners fnrnish the best mnsie tho
city affords, gratis, to tho immense throngs
collected hero ; for Saturday evening is a genoral
holiday which is spent by largo numbers at this
delightful placo. Bnt I mnst leave the Park
abruptly, withont so much as a parting notice of
Its beantifnl girls and many other delights.
SUNDAY
In lower New York, is quiet, bnt lively enough
nmong the fashionable npperdom. Broadway
goes to sleep, tho rustle of busses is hushed, no
lond sounds greet tho ear save tho chiming nnd
ringing of church bells; the pnlso of tho city
is at rost, but it is tho rest which follows nnd
precedes tho storm of tho week before and the
week to como.
pnHiADExjmA.
Threo hours carries yon to tho Quaker City.
I might add tho quaking city, for New York is
taking away its commcrco rapidly, nnd many of
its merchants have moved there. Its stores nnd
streets nro idle, and people do not move with
tho spirit and alacrity which characterize New
York. Here I had tho pleasure of seeing the
bell which proclaimed the birth nnd indepen
dence of tho Republic. Thero is n very large
crack in the boll, bnt a much larger one in the
independence, visible to the moral eye. Por
traits and relics of tho good men of those hal
cyon days of the Republic nro on tho walls and
about tlio rooms of this wondrous Independence
nail. By somo strnngo mistake portraits of
Lincoln nnd Grant aro placed in tho snmo rooms
with George Washington and a host of other
rebels. What a shock for loyalty! It's a won

and I need not sny more than it was a grand
aucoeas, especially as I did not attend it. In
fact thero is a grand ball ovory evening, ana
those fond of dancing have ample opportunity
of indulging in tho moro recent round dan cos
and squaro dances to their heart’s content.
In order to vary tho performances wo had an
impromptu agricultural mooting daring tho
present week, when speeches woro made by sev
eral gentlemen, who it appears wero all lawyers,
and not agriculturists. And such is tho case
d ually at Commercial Conventions; the speak-
are nearly alwnys lawyers. Speeches on this
occasion wero mndo by Mr. Barry, of Baltimore.
Mr. Sontlierland, of Virginia; Gen. Lawton, of
Georgia: Gen. Barringer, of North Carolinn; and
Gen. Lawler of Alabama. By the way, the crops
in this State are almost ruined by an eight weeks
drought, and East Tennessee, upon which yonr
planting friends rely so much for corn, will yield
bnt a poor supply of com. I sadly fear that the
profits of these largo cotton crops will bo lnate-
riallv diminished by tho high price of provisions.

New York, August 21, 1SG9.
Editors Telegraph : Two weeks havo whirled
away in tho vast metropolis since I last wrote to
you, as busy and full of lifo even at this dull
season of mid-summer as it is with us at the
moat favorable part of the year. Broadway,
tho groat thoroughfare, is a solid moving mass
of earnest, bnsy-looking people, of all ages and
conditions, during tho entire day—where oven
■ Aleman of luxury nnd leisure catch the cur
rent of this great throng, and find themselves
harrying on as rapidly as the busiest of them.
For tho student of human nature or character
Broadway is a never-ending, evor-varying book:
here wo SCO a quick, nervous, impulsive-looking
little man, whom wo set down as a Frenchman ;
after him some stout Teuton, perhaps a banker,
or may bo Cxi’nder of sour krout nnd lager
enterprising and successful in bis business,
whatever it may be : these musically-talking,
olive-complexioned and dark-eyed people are
Italians ; nnd thisgenUemen of very sails coun

much valuable information:
Dr. R. W. Carr, of Baltimore, says—I
take ploosuro in recommending your Hosa-
dulis hs a very powerful alterative. I have
scon it used in twb cases with happy results:
ono in a caso of secondary syphilis, in
which tho patient pronounced himself
cured after having taken five bottles of
your medicine. The other is a case of
scrofula of long standing, which is rapidly
improving under its use, and tho indica
tions aro that tho patient will soon recover.
I have carefully examined the formula)
, by which your Rosadalis is made, and find
it an excellent compound of alterative In
gredients.
