What 4 host ofgrumbling malcontents do
X»e ti id in'every different faculty and sect
in life ! The discarded st.atesm in, consider
ering the corruption of tne ti nes, would not
have any thing to do m the id uininistration
of alVairs, for all the world. The cashiered
lieutenant, disgu*t.ea with military usage,
•olemnly declne* a re-appointment—he
could not **•> persuaded to accept even a
captaincy, .1 it were to save his country;
and. so spunky has he grown, that he would
deter his comrades from taKing the coin-'
maud, if he could eff-ct it surreptitiously
•The long self nominated candidate for public
favour, convinced that he could not obtain a
vote—in the last nick of time, positively
withdraws his nam* orn the list of compe
titors—protesting at last, that he has had
enough of nuidic stations; and thatonhisi
own account, he must be permitted to waive |
the proffered honor, and thus divest himself j
of an official incumbrance, which he has!
In ig been anxious to resign. The frivo-i
lous knight, too, who, for years, has travel
led reekless of the course lus steed was bear
ing him, and inattentive to his welfare and
subsistence ; most opportunely resolves to
dismount, just as the neglected and injured
animal is ab mt to throw his rider in the
mire. Now, all this is well enough. It is
the way to “ make a virtue of necessity”-
And with a parcel of vain coxcombs in the
world, it is the summit of their philosophy
-11608086 they would never be thought to be
disappointed in any of their objects, they
pretend a serious dislike for every thing
which they cannot obtain ; forgetting all
the while, that the* never lie more notorj
' , ously, than when they affect to disparage
and find fault with a tiling, merely because
' it is out of their power.
In this class of malcontents, however,
there is here and there a more rebellious
wig it; who will sometimes take lire when
he sees others promoted to those offices,
which, in words he declines, but covets at
heart; although, of which, unfortunately
for his fictitious air of independence, form
er delinquencies have rendered him unwor
thy. There are many such aspirants in the I
w >rld. The most obnoxious feature of their
ambition is the base design of excluding
every body else from those honorable posts,
which themselves are not permitted to mon
opolize. Thus they play the part of the
dog in the fable ; they will neither eat hay
themselves, nor suffer others to do it. But
unlike the mastiff, who growls and barks
unmask'd, under a semblance of f iend
ship, they cherish revenge. Continual
ly do they subject themselves to real pain,
by wishing ill to others. |f they cannot
prevent others, from resuming distinctions
which they have lost, they aie prompt in
cunning, though detestable expedient to
atone for their humiliatingdis:i.o/)oii><, fl '
'CK«ir aniftc.es to
as they are silly, remind one of the craf«i- !
ness id’ reynaid, on losing his tad. Having
the misfortune, one day, to be caught in a|
steel trap, by that precious member, he
was glad to compound for his escape, with'
the loss of it. But on going into the world,'
he grew so sensible of the disgrace such a
defect would bring upon him, that he al
most wished lie had died, rather than lost" 1
his tail : However (o make the best of a,
bad matter, he resolved to call an assembly!
of foxes, and propose it for their imitation,
as a fashion that would be agreeable and be
coming—thinking that, if he could induce!
his whole species to cut off all their own
tail**, he would not appear to a disadvantage
among them. The meeting was called;
and he made a long harrangue upon the
nature and offices of tails in general, and
endeavoured to shew the awkwardness and
inconvenience of a fox’s tail i,n particular;
declaring that it would be more graceful and
expeditious, to be altogether without one ;
i for he never had enjoyed himself so well,
and found himself so light & easy, as he had
done, since he cut off Ids tail. Not under -
standing the art of writing, or of talking
long without saving any thing, he did not
attempt to intimidate his friends into the
measure by long speeches, or by anony
mous innuendoes —but stopt short and said
no more. While he was looking round the
company, with a brisk air of self approba
tion, to see what proselytes he had gained
a sly rogue, who understood trap , replied
with a leer, " 1 believe, sir, you may have
found a conveniency in parting witli your
tail; and when we full into the same circum
stances, perhaps we may do the same.”
None but fools will be gulled by such
tricks ; while none but they who have more
y resentment than piety, will bml gratification
in the use of them. Upright and high
minded men never descend to legitimate
mean actions ; they always act openly ; and
if defeat and disappointment be their lot,
they bear it with a g -od grace To accom
plish their aims, they practice no strata
gems, which they are ashamed to own. If
they would caution a friend, or reprimand a
foe, they perform (he office boldly; with
out adopting the pitiiul alternative of anon
ymous communications,and without enticing
an\ ol their compliant satellites to become
thcii cat’s paw. LAVEA I’.

The London Courier, in detailing the
advantages of Rail Roads, upon the locomo- i
tine steam engine principle, contains a re
mark relative to Mr Rush, our present j
Minister in London, and who is soon to re
turn as Secretary of the I’reasm y :
“ Whatever Parliament do, they cannoti
stop the course of knowledge and improve-'
meat! The American Government has,
possessed itself, through its '-blister, of the '
improved mode of constructing and making
Rail Ro uls, and there can be no doubt of
their immediate adoption throughout that

V ALUABLE CAP CURE.
The editors of the Balimore American,
have been politely favored by an esteemed
[friend with the following extract ol'a let
ter from a respectable source at Havana,
dated
n Havana, March 9, 1825.
We have nothing new here from Mexi-j
co or Colombia. The Colombian sloopl|
of war Bolivar, has captured the famous, J
well arm *1 ship, farautuia. (sailed from ;
Charleston , for Cadiz, on the 29'h last 1
August,) of Cadiz, and which loaded the
year before last at New-Vork with flour,
mounting 16 or 18 he'vy guns, with a|
lerew of 120 picked men, having a cargo ,
on board, it is said, of quick-ilver, &c.
worth nearly half q million of dollars.
The Tarantula having struck upon a
r i'e.y, the prize master had to go into Key
I West to refir y where lie in going in, struck
[upon the bar, and would have been lost,
hail it not been lor the aid of a vrecker.
i This wrecker claims a heavy salvage,
/which can only be satisfied by a sale of
, 4 the cargo and vessel, or so much of her
’cargo as will pay it. If thi is done, I
t iexpect that the government of Cuba will
prohibit all trade with that Island (Key
H West) as it will certainty give great of
i fence here, there being, it is said, more
than seventy owners here of her cargo,
and many of them d e most influential mer
chants o. Havana.’
An extract of auoVnev hitter dated on
i• the 12ili inst. says ; “ A Spanish schooner
/came in to-day from windward, and re-
I ported that lie had boarded a large ship a
. shore on Point Yacos, near Matanzas ; that
[{her decks were covered with blood, and he
[ supposed the crew had been murdered.
; What vessel she was, whether American or
1 European, he could not tell, but that the
; ship was loaded with dry goods. We are
( inclined to believe she has run ashore and
| the people made their escape to the beach.
.j We have to day a report that our Minis
r ter i- recalled from Spain ; that our naval
t officers are ordered to duty, and that our
; ships of war are to be immediately equip
. ped and ready for sea. At this news the
pleading Spaniards are much alarmed.”
—»>#•"
We learn from a source entitled to credit,
■ that the vessel mentioned below, is the Schr.
I Florida, (lately reported) and that there is
- no doubt of the persons left on the wreck,
r having been saved. [67ias. Patriot.
"i Shipwreck.—Capt. Mclntyre, of the
sclir. Herald, arrived at Providence from
1 Mobile reports, that on the Bth ult. in lat.
; 31,25, long. 77, he fell in with the wreck
1 of a schooner, about 70 tons burthen, new,
1 and full of water, but visible at intervals,
\ her decks varnished, small break to her
quarter deck, both masts gone, quarter and
’ wasie boards and boom painted green, quar
ter board outside, p tinted black with a green
' streak, bright varnished sides, green boot
top an! copper bottom; stumps of masts
V standing, all the spars, sails, &c. lay along
'iside. A number of small articles came out
"of the cabin window; among them a cane
5 with a silver head, a feather fan, a small
e pillow case, some chairs, and a number of
other small articles. Having no small boat
could not obtain any of them. Her stern
- wa- painted with floweis black and green.
Uould not ascertain her name. One hour
after leaving the wreck, spoke schr. Mary,
, >t Charleston, bound to the West Indies:
r informed him of ilie wreck ; bearing SS W
5 miles, he stood for the wreck, and soon
- after saw him heave to.

CauHm. —The subscriber lakes this me

which in this country he believes to be with
ou l a precedent. About six weeks ago I ad

of which a young woman, named Emma
Bradford, English, of Boston, called at my
house and off-red her services in the above
c ipacify ; ! employed her, and she continu
ed in the performance of her duties, and con
ducted herself apparently, with the most
perfect propriety,' fin til about two weeks
ipast, when she one day came into my private
room, and without ceremony proposed to be
come my wife. 1 was surprised at such a
proposal ; but having been gjeased with the
kind care and attention site appeared to
I manifest towards my children, I acceded to
her proposition and left to her the appoint
ment ofa time for the matrimonial ceremo
nies. She said the anniversary of her birth
day would be on tip* 13th inst. and she
| would pr efer being married on thar day. This
being agreed to, I procured from the parish
judge, the H "I. J. Pitot, a licence in legal
form for marriage—on the evening appointed
the Rev. Mr. Hall and sever I gentlemen
and ladies, who had been invited on the con
templated occasion at my house, and after
being seated a short time, the pretended
bride entered the room, and making a few
remarks, left the house. Supnosing sire was
tube my wife, I at her reque-t, famished her,
with do lung, &<-. tea considerable amount
which she clandestinely removed from my
house near the time ofhtM - leaving it. From
a sense of duty to myself and the public (
