AN Examination of this Institution took place
on the 16th and 17th inst. And the Trua
'ees do unhesitatingly state, that they never wit
nessed young Ladies and young Gentlemen do
themselves or their Teacher more credit than
these did. There was scarcely a blunder by one
of the students on either day of the Examination
in the different branches of study which they
had been pursuing.
The following young Ladies and young Gen
tlemen on English Grammar merited much
praise ■ —
Miss Elizabeth J. Marshall, of Abbeviile Hist.
“ Sophronia C. Cornier, do.
“ Mary Ann Jordan, do.
“ Agnes C Weems, do.
“ DU: a Anderson, do.
“ Eliza Herndon, of Newberry District.
“ Alary Ann Conner, of Abbeville District,
“ Alary dun E. Travis, do.
Mr. William L. Gairy, of Alabama State.
“ Jacob Clechley, of Orangeburgh Dist. S. C,
“ Daniel A 'Tarrant, of Barnwell District.
“ William C, Gnerry, of Sumpter District.
“ Jlichard J Winn, of Walton County, Ga.
“ Wm. A. H Unit, of Columbia County, Ga.
“ Urban C. G. 'Tarrant, of Uarnwell, S. 0.
The greater part of these exhibited composi
tions which were much approved, not only by
the examining Committee, but also by the Spec- V
tutors at large, hi Geography they done very
well, and with great promptitude and accuracy
performed several problems on the Globe, not on
ly the most familiar, such as the Latitude and
Longitude of places and the measuring of distances
by the Quadrant of altitude r but with equal rea
diness they gave us the Antoeci, the Tcrioeci the
Antipodes, &c. of places.
Miose in the languages stood a very correct and
good examination. In Arithmatic they generally
done well. There were 15 or 16 who delivered
speeches, the greater part of whom obtained much
eulogy from the Spectators.
The Academy thus far has exceeded our most
sanguine calculations, both to the respect of mem
bers and to progress in learning. And we would
here correct an error which seems to have gone m
abroad, that our number is completed, and that .
we can take in n > more students, and again, that
there are already too many or one man to do
justice to, we therefore inform the public, tha
we shad procure an assistant for the Hev. Josj p.i
Travis, A. M.and one whom he shall approve of,
whenever the number of students shall exceed
forty Jive, A few more are yet wanted to call for
an assistant, and we have had demonstrative proof
at our late examination that the students have noi
been neglected. Convenient and good boarding
