Paladins.
Tliis Is the title of anew book, by J. Estln Cooks,
of Virginia, author of “ Surry- of Eagle’s Nest.”—
It. is a richly bound book, printed on fine-toned
paper, lias for its frontispiece a tine steel medallion
head of Gen. I.ms, and four beautiful illustrations
in Homer’s best style. It contains upward of SCO
pages. Price, sent to any address post-paid, $3.35.
From the advance sheets we make the following
extract, which, in speaking of the “ last charge”
made by the Army of Northern Virginia, thus hap
pily mentions the part borne by Georgia’s gallant
son, General John B. Gohdon ;
“ Gordon had formed his line of battle across the
road just beyond the Court House —and, supported
by Fitzhugh Lee’s cavalry, and Carter’s artillery on
Ills right, was advancing with measured steps to
break through tlie enemy. It was a spectacle to
make the pulse throb. The little lmndlul waß go
ing to death unmoved. The red light of morning
darted from the burnished gun-barrels of the in
fantry, the. sabres of the cavalry, and the grim can
non following, In sombre lightnings.
Gordon, the “ Bayard Qf the army,” was riding in
front of his line. The hour and the men had both
come. Steadily the “ old guard” of the Army of
Northern Virginia advanced to its last field of battle.
Suddenly, in front of them, the woods swarmed
with the enemy’s infantry, cavalry, and artillery.
The great multitude had evidently employed the
hours of the night well. Grant’s entire army seem
ed to have massed itself iu Gordon’s front. But the
force was not the question. Gordon’s one thous
and aiul six hundred men were in motion ! And
when Gordon moved forward he always fought, it
lie found an enemy. It five minutes the opponents
had closed in, in stubborn fight, and the woods
roared with musketry, cannon, and carbines. Then
a resounding cheer arose. Tlie enemy had recoiled
before Gordon, and lie pressed forward, sweeping
everything in bis path for nearly a mile beyond tlie
Court House.”
Homicide.
Wc learn that on Monday evening Mr. Mai. Cheek
was killed near Shady Dale, Jasper county, by a
brother of Capt. McGinnis, who was killed some
months since by Walter Check, brother of the man
now slain. The particulars which are given are
about all we can learn at present. McGinnis seems
to nave been seeking Walter Cheek, when the en
cdunter occurred resulting in the death of Mai.
Clerk, as above stated.
