Democratic Negro Killed.
On Friday night, the ltith inst., a negro named
Manuel, was killed hy some unknown parties on
Mr. Maxey’s plantation, at the house of Tom Allen,
late negro member of the Legislature from Jasper
r ,maty. It is reported that some persons culled
Turn alter they had gone to bed, to bring -a light,
pretending to be bunting. Tom told Manuel to take
!he light, and he was shot as soon ns lie went out.
No cause for the murder ©an be assigned, by our
informant. As the deceased was a Democratic ne
gro, his death will hardly be charged upon the op
j omuls of Radicalism. But whatever motive act*
imed the perjM'tiators of this great wrong, it must
meet tile unqualified condemnation of all good cit
izens.
Business Reviving.
Notwithstanding the crushing effects of Radical
rule on ihe material interests of the country, it is
evident that business is reviving, and Covington is
com a anding a largo trade. For instance, tlie ex
tensive stock of Fall Goods advertised by Messrs.
<i 11. 3ASPKRS.<& lino., is attracting people from
all directions ; and as they are crowded with more
new goods thau they have room for, they make it
ito (lie iutcrest of ail to buy of them ; so that they
fare kepi constantly busy, either opening new goods
[or supplying purchasers. If you want lo forget all
lie non le of the times, just call at their store,
text to the Court House, and you will be reminded
if the prosperous days before the war. Their Dry
hauls and Family Groceries are sold so cheap that
iliey ate crowded with customers.
About ’Tafers.
IV c find the following communication on the
abject of “ tutor vines,” in one of our ex
•lianges, which we give for what it is worth.
The plan is simple, and well worth trying:
“Mu F, niton : As our planters are now dig
ring their potatoes—by cutting the tops in
engths of eight to fifteen inches and putting
hem the same way, and with the same care
hey do their seed potatoes, they will have in
•arlv spring an abundant supply of slips for
limiting—save the cost of seed and bedding,
ind have new potatoes for the table sixty days
earlier than by the plan now adopted. It will
nst but little to try the experiment, and suc-
Jess is certain if care is used.
