Farewell.
RV L. U'UMMI K.
Hiere i* n wnnl whose solemn lone
Tomes o'er the spirit like n knell:
And sadder Ilian the ocean's moan.
Is that low, tremhlintr sound, farewell.
It flits across the heart's grows bowers
TYlicn roses hlootn without a thorn :
And on its gay and flagrant flowers
it leaves a blight —a waste forlorn.
In this dark world we often hear
That word so like a juissing knell;
And sunniest days of Joy and cheer
Are ever followed I>V “ Farewell.
Huton that lore® and loving riior"
Where death and sorrow cannot dwell;
Fond, trusting hearts shall part no more.
Nor breathe that tearful wool. Farewell.
From the Louisville Courier.

In view of the marvelous fact
That life’s hut a delicate span,
Mr. Brown displays wonderful tact
For being a wonderful man,
’Tis said, with no meaning of mirth,
That he uttered in accents sublime —
As soon as he came upon earth—
The astonishing syllable, “ Time 1”
Let us not on this episode frown ;
lie had cause for the juvenile moon ;
Unlike Hiclmrd of royal renown,
Who entered the world rather soon.
While a youth, nltho" prompt as the best,
No slur on his morals was east
Bv those who are quick to invest
Young men with the title of “ fast.”
When in love, the same rule he observed,
That at school he had followed so well,
And nothing external e'er swerved
Ilis thoughts from the voice of the belle!
In popping the question, lie fled
Not the least from his regular line ;
Answer quickly, my dearest, lie said,
I’ve another engagement at nine.
Now comforts fall amply and thick
On his life—a melodious chime—
And 'tlio' shunning transactions “on tick”
Ho delights to do business “ on time!”
Yet in pleasure, one pang ever darts,
And drags his hilarity down,
To think, when from life he departs,
They'll call him the late Mr. Brown,”
‘ Let Jrkmes Go.—The Land We Lore gives
q model letter from a young lady whose sweet
heart was in the fifth South Carolina regiment
to Mr. Davis, President of the late Confeder>
acy, asking for a furlough for her lover to
cjme home and get married:
‘•Dear Mr. President: I want you to let
.Teenies Clancy, of company lth,. r >th S. C. regi
ment conic homo and get married. Jecmes is
willin’. I is willin’, my mammy, she is willin’,
his mammy says she is willin', but Jecmes'
captain lie niu't willin.' Now when we’re all
willift,’ 'ccptin Jeeme's captain, I think you
might let up and let Jccincs come. I’ll make
him go straight hack when lie’s done got mar
ried, and fight just ns hard as ever. Your
affectionate friend, &o."
Mr. Davis wrote on the letter, “Let Jecmcs
■go,” and Jennies eauie home and married the
affectiona’c correspondent of Mr, Davis, and
returned to his regiment, and did fight as well
as ever.
