‘•Tliere is a bright and dark side to every
thing in life. It is v ise to look for the for
mer : It may always he fonnd.”
Thou gentle brook, by thy sweet side,
With lingerin'; steps I love to stray,
And hear the ripple of thy tide
Make music on its joyous wny.
Chafed by the pebbly bed below,
I see thee now in bubbles foam ;
And now 1 mark thy wavelets flow,
In glassy smoothness gliding home.
Now thou art lost in yonder dell,
Whose matted foliage hides from right.
In darkness there nwhilo to dwell,
Then laughing leap once more to light.
Now thy bright surface takes the beam,
To throw it back to yonder sun ;
And now again thou liid’st thy stream,
And all unseen thy waters run.
Thus light and shade alternate play
Upon thy current flowing free ;
And musing on thy changeful way,
A moral hast thou taught to me.
The brook is life.— The pebbly bed,
The trials that keep pure the stream ;
The bubbles—airy hopes that fled,
Like visions of a vanished dream.
The leafy darkness of the dell,
Is sorrow’s cloud of faithless fears ;
The sunny light,—the joys that swell,
When Heaven has kissed away our tears.
Hut, gentle brook, the pebbly bed,
I see is not thy changeless lot,
Nor bubbling foam, nor darkness dread ;
But many a sweet and sunny spot.
So trials sore, and hopes delayed,
And sorrow's cloud, are not the whole
That God on earth, for man, has made,
For there is sunshine for the souL
Nor light, nor shade, we changeless see,
The stream rnnsdark,and now’tisbright,
In light—then let me grateful bes
In darkness—patient, wait for light.
Two Sharper*.
A noted sportsman taking dinner at one of
our clubs, exhibited a diamond ring of great
ltcauty and apparent value on liis finger. A
gentleman present had a great passion for
diamonds. After dinner the parties met in the
office. After much bantering the owner con
sented to barter the ring for the sura of six
hundred dollars. As the buyer left the room
a suppressed tittering struck his car. lie con
cluded that the former had sold both his ring
and tbe purchaser. He said nothing, but called
the next day upon ajeweler, where he learned
that the diamond was paste, and the ring
worth about twenty-five dollars. He examined
nome real diamonds and found one closely re
sembling the paste in his own ring. He hired
the diamond for a few days, pledged twelve
hundred dollars, the price of it, and gave a hun
dred dollars for its use. He went to another
jeweler, had the paste removed, and the real
diamond set, His ehums knowing he had been
imposed upon, waited impatiently for his ap
pearance the next night. To their astonish
ment they found him in high glee. lie flour
ished his ring, boasted of his bargain, and said
if any body present had a twelve hundred dol
lar ring to sell iorsix hundred dollars he knew
of a purchaser.
When he was told that the ring was paste
and that he had been cheated, he laughed at
their folly. Bets were offered that the ring did
not contain a real diamond. Two men bet SI,OOO
each, and’two SSOO. All were taken. Umpires
were chosen. The money and the ring were
putinto their hands. They went to a first-class
jeweler, who applied all the tests, and who
said the stone was diamond of the first water
and was worth, without the setting 1,200.
The buyer put the $3,000 which he had won
quietly into his pocket. lie carried the dia
mond back, and recalled his If 1,200, and with
his paste ring on his finger went to his club.
The man who sold the ring was waiting for
him. He wanted to get the ring back. He
attempted to turn the whole thing into a joke.
He sold the ring he said, for fun ;he knew
it was a real diamond all the time; he never
wore false jewels ; he could tell a real diamond
anywhere by its peculiar light; be would not
be so mean as to cheat nn old friend ; he knew
his friend would let him have the ring again.
But his friend was stubborn, said that the seller
thought it was paste, and intended to defraud
hitn. At length on the payment of eight hun
dred dollars, the ring was restored. All par
ties came to the conclusion, when the whole
affair came out that when diamond cuts dia
mond again, someone less sharp will be select

Dewdrops of Wisdom.
Ilabit is a cable. We weave a thread of
it every day, and at last we cannot break it.
He who is false to present duty breaks a
thread in the loom, and will find the flaw when
he may have forgotten its cause.
Oui minds are as our faces ; we are travel
ing to one destination-llappiness ; but fow>re
going by the same road.
The proudest triumph in a man’s life is
when he makes a friend of an enemy. The
joy is then akin to that which angels feel as
they rejoice over a sinner that rcpentctli.
Do not highten your present sorrows by a
morbid imagination. You know not what a
day may bring forth. The future is likely to
he better than yon expect, as well as worse.
There is no fortune so good but that it may
be reversed, and none so bad but it may be
better. The sun that rise* in the clouds may
s -t in splendor, and that which rises in splen
dor may set in gloom.
Black eyed ladies are most apt to be pas
sionate and jealous. Blue eyed, soulful, truth
s ul, affectionate and confiding. Gray eyed,
philosophical, literary, resolute, cold-hearted.
Hazel eyed, quick-tempered and fickle.
