The Little Shoe in the Corner.
BV .TAMES RUSSELL LOWELL.
Yes, Faith is a goodly anchor;
When skies are sweet ns a psalm,
At the bows it toils so stalwart
In bluff, broad-shouldered calm.
And when, over breakers to leeward
The tattered surges are hurled,
It may keep our head to'the tempest,
With its grip on the base of the world.
But, after the shipwreck, tell.me
What help in its iron thews,
Still true to the broken hawser,
Beep down among sea-weed and ooze ?
In the breaking gulfs of sorrow,
When the helpless feet stretch out,
And find in the deeps of darkness
No footing so solid as doubt,
Then better one spar of memory,
One broken plank of the past,
That our human heart may cling to,
Though hopeless of shore at last 1
To the spirit its splendid conjectures,
To the flesh its sweet despair,
Its tears o’er the thin-worn locket
With its beauty of deathless hair 1
Immortal 1 I feel it and know it;
Who doubts it of such as she ?
But that is the pang’s very secret—
Immortal away from me 1
There’s a narrow ridge in the graveyard
Would scarce stay a child in his race ;
But to me and my thought it is wider
Than the star-sown vague of space.
Your logic, my friend, is perfect,
Your morals most drearily true,
But the earth that stops my darling's ears
Makes mine insensate too.
Console, if yon will; I can bear it:
’Tis a well-meant alms of breath ;
But not all the preaching since Adam
Has made Death other than Death.
Communion in spirit 1 Forgive me,
But I, who am earthly and weak,
Would give all my incomes from dreamland
For her rose-leaf palm on my cheek !
That little shoe in the corner,
So worn and wrinkled and brown—
Its motionless hollow cenfutes you,
And argues your wisdom down.
Singular Preservation.
The London Herald tells the following sin
gular and touching story:
Not many years since certain miners, work
ing far underground, came upon the body of
a poor fellow who had perished in the suffoca
ting pit forty years before.
Some chemical agent to which the body bad
been subjected—an agent prepared in the la<-
horatory of nature— bad effectually arrested the
progress of decay. They brought it up to the
surface, and for a while, till it crumbled away
through exposure to the atmosphere, it lay
there, the image of a fine, sturdy young man.
No convulsion had passed over the face in
death—the features were tranquil ; the hair
was black as jet. No one recognized the face
—a generation had grown up since the day on
which the miner went down his shaft for the
last time.
But a tottering old woman, who had hur<«
ried from her cottage at hearing the news,
came up, and she knew again the face which,
through all these years, she had never quite
forgotten. The poor miner was to havo been
her husband on the day after that on which he
died. They were rough people, of course,
who were looking on ; a liberal education and
refined feelings are not deemed essential to the
man whose work is to get up coals or even tin ;
but there were no dry eyes there when the
grey-beaded old pilgrim cast herself upon the
youthful corpse, and poured into its dear ear
many words of endearment unused for forty
years. It was a touching contrast; the one so
old, the other so young. They bad both been
young those long years ago; but time had
gone on with the living, and stood still with
the dead.
Little Walter Draper is a very good little
boy, according to all rules laid down for good
little boys. Last Sunday he asked his mother
to allow him to go down to the Gould & Curry
Reservoir, when bis mother refused, on the
ground of its being the Sabbath. Good little
boys sometimes cry a little, and Walter began
blubbering.
»‘Why, Walter,’ cried his mother, “ I am as
tonished ! The idea of your wishing to go
down to the reservoir on the Lord 8 holy Sab
bath to go -swimming with a lot of bad little
boys 1”
“ 800 hoo 1” blubbers Walter, “ I didn’t
want to go a swimming with ’em, ma ; I only
wanted to go down and see the bad little boys
get drowned for goin’ a swimmin’ a Sunday—

A clerical correspondent writing from Phil*,
ndelphia relates that not long since at the
breaking ground for a rail road in a certain
town in the South-west, a clergyman, on being
called upon to open the proceedings with prayer
took from his pocket a manuscript supplication,
prepared for the occasion, which he read. A
colored brother present, leaning upon his
shovel, remarked with a grin, “Golly! dat’s
de fust time die darkey ever knew de Lord writ
ten to on de subjeck of a railroad!”
‘You say you know a horso from a jackass
when you sec them ? asked a counsel of a
rather dull-looking witness. ‘Oh, ye—as—
just so,’ drawled out the intended victim gai
ing intently at bis legal tormentor, ‘I knows
the difference, and I’d never take you for a
horse. ’
“Have you Blasted Hopes’’ asked a lady of
a green librarian, whose face was considerably
swollen; “No, ma’am, hut I have a blasted
toothache,” was the reply.
