Mother’s Grave.
BY GBOnCE TANARUS). I’HF.NTICE.
Tho trcrobliug dew drops fall
Upon the shutting flowers, like souls at rest,
The tears shine gloriously, and all
Save me are blessed.
Mother ! I love thy grave !
The violet, with its blossoms blue and milt],
Waves o'er thy head. A\ hen will it wave
Above thy child ?
’Tis a sweet flower: yet must
Its bright leaves to the morning tempest bow.
Dear mother, 'tis thine emblem —dust
Is on thy brow.
And I could love to die—
To leave untasted life's dark, bitter streams;
By thee, as erst in childhood, lie,
And share thy dreams.
And must T linger here,
To stain the plumage of my sinless years,
And mourn the hopes of childhood dear
With bitter tears ?
Aye, I must linger here,
A lonely branch upon a withered tree,
Whose last frail leaf, untimely sere,
Went down with thee.
Oft from life's withered bower,
In still communion with the past, I turn,
And muse on thoe, the only flower
In memory’s urn.
And when the evening, pale,
Bows like a mourner, on the dim, blue wave,
I strny to hear the night winds wail
Around thy gravo.
Where is thy spirit flown ?
I gaze above—thy look is imaged there—
I listen, and thy gentle tone
Is on the air,
0, come, while hero I press
My brow upon thy grave, and, in those mild
And thrilling tones of tenderness,
Bless, bless thy child t
A Bed Bug Story.
A gentleman who has returned from some-,
whero in the ‘oil regions,’ tells the following
story :
‘He had hardly got to bed when he was
awakened by a bite. Upon lighting a match
he found a bedbug about half an inch in diame
ter. lie threw the hug with the match into a
basin of water that stood at the head of the bed.
The process was repeated several times. At
last he was awakened out of a sound sleep by
what he thought was a person singing. He
threw up the window, hut could not find the
source of the sweet sound : at last he looked
into the basin, where he found that the hugs had
constructed a raft out of the matches he had
thrown in, and were towing it round the basin
and singing, ‘A life on the Ocean Wave."
It is a little remarkable that the book whose
contents are more inteiesting than those of any
other volume issued, is a book that has never
been printed. The curiosity of the intelligent
reader will be allayed when we state that the
book alluded to is the pocket-book.
Titat New Orleans Judge Again. —An in
dividual possessing unmistakable evidence of
African extraction, was arraigned at a New
Orleans police court a few days ago for larceny.
The Judge, as of right, was dignified, but with
severe presence, “Are you guilty or not he
inquired.
‘Sar ?’
‘Hid yon steal these clothes ?’ ho repeated.
‘dolly, boss, ’elare never done it.’
‘This man says you did.’
' ‘He aint nothin’ but white trash.’
‘And what are you T
‘Me! Why don't you know me. I lid with
you in the pereession. T helped to tote you
home when you got tired dat night—don’t yer
remember mo now ?’
There was the ‘suddenest’ nol. pros, in that
darkey’s case that judicial annals afford an ox»
ample of. So much for the advantages of good
society.
Press on. -—The mystery of Napoleon’s career
was this. Under all difficulties and discourage
ments, to “press on !” It solves the problem
of all heroes; it is the rule by which to judge
of all wonderful success and triumphal marches
to fortune and genius. It should be the motto
of all “Press on”—never despair, never be
discouraged ; however stormy the heavens, or
dark the way, or great the difficulties, or re
pcated the failures, “press on !” If fortune
proves false with thee to-day, do thou prove
true for this to-morrow. Let the folly of yes>
terday make thee wise to-day. If thy affections
have been poured out like water in the desert,
sit not down and perish of thirst but “press
oo”—a beautiful oasis is before thee, and thou
mny’st reach it if thou wilt.
Cuff, can you tell me the difference between
an accident and a misfortune?” “I gives it
up, Pomp; can you?” Yes; if an infernal
revenue ossifer should fall into the river, that
would be an accident; if some body should pull
him out, that would be a misfortune.”

The Marietta Journal says : Chief Justice
Chase predicts that before Grant has been
President one year one half of the House of
Representatives will be arrayed against him,
and that anew party will arise to save the
country. Vallandingham says Grant will be
a Democratic President, and that he will be a
cordial supporter of his administration before
his time expires.
A Novei. Phenomenon. —A saw mill on the
Shediac river, in New Brunswick, recently set
fire to itself and was totally destroyed. A
freshet lifted the gate, which started the mill,
and the rapid and continued revolutions of the
circular saw, the belting of which had been
left on, are believed to have heated the boxes
to such an extent as to set the contiguous wood
work on fire.”
