iron tbc MS. poems of the late Edward F.
Murehead.'
Sleep Thee, Comrade.
Sleep tbee, oomrade! cold and still,
In thy 6ilent cell of death !
Winter's storm brings thee no ill,
Spring no sweet, reviving breath !
Where the clustered pine trees wavo
Hope’s green banner o'er the dead,
There amid the fallen brave,
Loved, regretted, rest thy head !
Sleep thee, comrade 1 on thy brain
Fancy's finger may not press ;
Blunted every arrow pain
Once had dipped in dark distress—
Faith with guiding finger yet
Points the mourner to the sky,
Where the shadows of regret
Brighten in the Master’s eye.
Sleep thee, comrade! never more
Fate shall stay the rising thrill,
Kindling projects raised of yore,
At the prompting of thy will;
Ah ! the wealth of truth and trust
Garnered in that breast of thine,
Few have seen; nor know how just
Every motion of thy mind.
Sleep thee, comrade ! from thy grave
Friendship's sightless chain shall reach
Far away to him you gave
Lessons which thy acts did preach,
Other knees than mine shell bend,
Doing homage unto prayer ;
But no better, truer friend
Sends a wreath of sorrow there !
Our Consecration.
From out each yesterday oflife
All have some precious store to keep,
Some little store of golden worth,
Some treasure rescued from the deep
Os those gone hours, ere yet the waves
Os time have closed their quiet graves.
Thrice dark of all dark days that one
Which leaves no brightness from its hours;
No nightingale to sing at eve,
No after fragrance from its flowers,
No holy dew distilled from heaven,
To consecrate it fresh from even.
Blest art thou, heart that ycarncst,(though
The tears that dim thine eyes be yaiu,)
To call back something from the past—
Some yesterday to life again,
Tlio gladdest summer of our years
We consecrate by autumn tears.
Each consecrates some precious part,
Some secret store of hidden worth ;
We garner each our harvest sheaves,
Our golden memories of earth,
Against the winter time of need,
That we may after come and feed.
And when the yesterdays oflife
Shall all be numbered, still I deem
Each one shall have its store to keep
His fadeless relic of earth’s dream ;
Some shadows softened by God’s light,
Some star that made his journey bright.
A writer, whose life has passed its meridian,
thus discourses upon the flight of time :
“Forty years once seemed a long and weary
pilgrimage to make. It now seems but a
step. And yet along the way are broken
sjirines where a thousand hopes have wasted
into ashes; footprints sacred under their drif
ting dust; green mounds where grass is fresh
with the watering of tears; shadows even
which we would not forget. We will garner
the sunshine of those years, and with chasten
ed step and hopes push on towards the eve
ning whose signal lights will soon be seen
swinging where the waters are still and the
storms never beat.’’
.A Can Francisco restaurant keeper employ
ed a dozen handsome girls for waiters, and his
place acquired an immense popularity. The
proprietor was in ecstasies and walked about
rubbing his bands with unctuous delight.—
Many of the customers would call for ico*
cream, and ask the fair waitresses to join them;
they were consequently filled chock full of
nice things all the time. Matters progressed
finely for several weeks, when the girls became
more attentive to the guests than to business,
lie scolded, and they promised amendment,
and invited him to a little tea-party, lie went,
and witnessed the wedding of all his girls at
one|l'ell swoop. He is looking'now for a collec
tion of athletic “furriners” to fill the places of
the departed cofiee-jerkers.
A Domestic Farce.—“ Why is it, my son,
that when you drop your bread and butter, it
is always on the buttered side?”
Son, five years old—“J don't know. The
strongest side ought to be up, and this is the
strongest butter I have ever seen.”
“llush up; it* some of your aunt's churn
ing.”
“Did she churn it, the great lazy thing.”
“What, your aunt ?”
No this butter. To make the old lady
churn it, when it is strong enough to churn
itself.”
“Hush Zebbic, I’ve eat much worse in the
most aristocratic houses."
“Well, people of lank ought to eat such
butter.;’
“Why people of rank ?”
“Cause it’s rank butter.”
The Memphis Avalanche, one of the most
violent and ultra papers ever published in the
Sooth, has come out for universal suffrage.—
It would not at all astonish us to hear of Brick
Pomeroy and the Metropolitan Record follow
ing suit. There is no accounting for the vaga
ries of these extreme gentlemen, and no telling
which side they may be on six months from
date. Like Borne principles in nature, they
run in cycles and go so fast that they get out
of sight and become enveloped in matter upon
the opposite side of the earth, lost to their for
mer friends: or, like the pendulum of the
clock, they swing as far on one side as the
other.— Ex.

Is! an I c: SL Crsis far their health, ezperianced and witnessed many surprising and
bcae£sial effects of the Rum there produced upon many of the invalids who were (like
ourselves) eseldng health ; and, upon inquiry and investigation, obtained a full history
cf its medicinal virtues. He was delighted and surprised, and after his own recovery,
which sosn occurred, determined, if possible, to procure the sols right to manufacture
and sell it in the United States.
The result of his labors was a glorious success for himself and suffering humanity,
for tho colobrated PLANTATION BITTERS was thus made known to the world. PLAN
TATION BITTERS boing an article of real merit, founded upon now principles, and
relying wholly upon the vegetable world for its medicinal effects, worked a rapid revolu
tion in the history of medicine, and became as a household word all over the civilized
world. The cabalistic S. T.—ISSO—S. was a talisman of health, and the demand for
th: PLANTATION LITTERS icon far exceeded the abilities of the proprietors to supply.
Notwithstanding the large importation of St. Crciz Rum, made ezpressly for the com
jcunclmg cf these Litters, the quantity was inadequate. It therefore became necessary
that arranger-cnts upon en extensive scale abroad should at once be made, and an agent
was dispatched to St. Thomas for that purpose. He was fortunate in securing and
leasing several plantations on some of the largest and most productive estates on the
island. Tenses, stills and presses were erected as if by magic, which utterly aston
ished tho natives.” Tho services of experienced men and natives of the island were pro
cured, and very soon the proprietors of tho PLANTATION BITTERS were in a position
"-pply their laboratory with all the perfectly pure St. Croix Rum needed in manufac

the natives crushing the sugar-cane and otherwise preparing it for the stills and presses.* - *
t bs an ar—.os w Lever and Ague, Intermittent and Malarious Fevers, Dyspepsia, and
ether k!i:dr:.d diseases, the use of the PLANTATION LITTERS is unsurpassed in ths
history of the world. Over five million bottles are disposed of annually. They are
adapted tc oid and young, male and famine. They 're agreeable in taste, and always
