The Mystery ol Nature.
The works of God tire fair for naught,
Unless our eyes, in seeing,
See hidden in the tiling the thought
“ That animates its being.
The outward form is not the whole,
Os every part is moulded
To image forth an inward soul,
That dimly is unfolded.
The shadow, pictured in the hike
15y every tree that trembles,
Is mat for more than just the sake
Os that which it resembles.
Thu dew falls nightly, not nlone
Because the meadows need it,
But on an errand of its own,
To human souls that heed it.
The stars are lighted in the skies,
Not merely for their shining,
llut, like the looks of loving eyes,
• Have meanings worth divining.
The waves that moan along the shore,
The winds that sigh in blowing,
Are sont to teach a mystic lore
Which men are wise iu knowing.
The clouds around the mountain peak,
The rivers in their winding,
Ilnre secrets, which to nil who seek,
Are secrets in the finding.
Thus Nature dwells within our reach,
But though we stand so near her,
We will interpret half her speech
With ears too dull to hear her.
Whoever, at the coarsest sound,
Still listens to the finest,
Shall hear the noisy world go round
To musie the divinest.
Whoever yoarns to see aright
Because his heart is tender,
Shall catch a glimpse of heavenly light
In every earthly splendor.
So, since the universe began,
And till it shall be ended,
The soul of nature, soul of man,
And soul of God are blended!
A Model Lawyer.
“Squire Johnson” was a model lawyer, as
the following anecdote will show :
Mr. Jones once rushed into the Squire's
offico in a great passion. “That infernal
scoundrel of a cobbler, Smith, has sued me, Mr.
Johnson —sued me for five dollars I owe him
for a pair of boots.”
“Then you owe him the five dollars?”
“To be sure I do ; but he's gone and sued
me—sued me 1”
“Then why don't you pay him if you owe
him?”
“Because he’s sued me ; and when a man
does that, I’ll never pay him till it costs him
something more than ho gets. I want you to
make it cost him all you can.”
“But it will cost you something too !"
“I don't care for that. What do you charge
to begin with ?”
“Ten dollars; and more if there is extra
trouble.”
“All right! There's the X. Now go
ahead f*’
No sooner was his eliont gono than Squire
Johnson stepped across to his neighbor Smith,
and offered to pay the bill on condition that
t!i» suit should be withdiawn. The shocma
ker gladly acceded—all he wanted was his
pay. The lawyer retained the other Cvo for
his fee ; and as the ease was not ‘troublesome’
made no farther demand upon his client.
Ten days after Jones came in to see how
his case was getting on.
“All right!’’ said the lawyer. “You won’t
have any trouble about that. I put it to
Smith so strongly that lie was glad to with'
draw the suit altogether.’’
“Capital!’’ eried the exulting Jones. “You
have done it up brown! You shall have
all my business.”
Changes in Thirteen Years.
In 1853, Mr. Buchanan was Minister to
England. Captain George 11. McClellan was
■Retailed on secret service to the harbor of Cu
ba, under instructions from the Secretary of
War. General Quitman, Lieutenant Beaure
gard and others were plotting fillibustering
raids against tho island, for which the Govern
ment soon after made an offer of $100,000,000.
Parson Brownlow had written a savage work
in defense of slavery, and was challenging
Northern clergvmon to dispute its divine au
thority. Oerritt Smith, Dr. Ilowe, Henry
Ward Beecher, and a few hundred others wero
doing a quiet and limited business in’the un
derground railway. John Brown had not yet
JeFt his farm in the northern wilds. An ob
scure individual, remembered by a few as hav
ing once represented Sangamon District, Illi
nois, in the House, and opposed the Mexican
war in an awkward, disingenious and ex
tremely unpopular argument, received a few
complimentary votes fir Vice-President, in
competition with Mr. Drayton, the nominee.
.CuptaiD U. S. Grant, hardly suspected of be
ing an ex-army officer by those who bought
molasses or cordwood of him. was generally
taken for a steamboat captain, temporarily
stranded by a stress of ill luck, or who hardly
had the energy and pluck to succeed in any
business calling, and therefore collapsed into
a speculator in sundries. W. T. Sherman
was teaching in Louisiana. General Sickles,
Bntlor and Logan were rough-and-tumble
Democratic lawyers of some notoriety. Two
of the most prominent find promising officers
of our little army were Colonel Albert Sidney
Johnson and Lieutenant Colonel Robert E.
Lee.
Good Advice. —Say nothing about yoursolf,
either good, bnd, or indifferent : nothing good,
for that is vanity ; nothing bad, for that is af
fectation ; nothing indifferent, for that is very
silly.

Hariy yoar3 ?.”C, th-i "Writer cf tlicce lines and an Invalid physician, white visiting tho
Isiani cf St. Croix for thei? health, experienced and witnessed many surprising and
beneficial effects of the Hum thero produced upon many of the invalids who were (like
ourselves) seeking health ; and, upon inquiry and investigation, obtained a full history
of its medicinal virtues. He was delighted and surprised, and after his own recovery,
which soon occurred, determined, if possible, to procure tho sob right to manufacture
and sell it in tho United States.
The result of his labors was a glorious success for himself and suffering humanity,
for the celebrated PLANTATION EITT2P.3 wa3 thus made known to the world. PLAN
TATION BITTFS2 being ah article of real merit, founded upon now principles, and
relying wholly upon the vegetable world for its medicinal effects, worked a rapid revolu
tion in the history .of medicine, and became a3 a household word all over the civilized
werld. The cabalistic S. T.—lß6o—S. was a talisman cf health, and tho demand for
the PLANTATION BITTERS soon far exceeded the abilities of the proprietors to supply.
the large importation cf St. Croix Bum, made expressly for tho com
pounding of these Bitters, the quantity was inadequate. It therefore became necessary
that arrangements upon an extensive scale abroad should at once be mado, and an agent
vm dispatched to St. Thousau for that purpose. He was fortunate in securing and
leasing several plantations cn seme of the largest and most productive estates on the
iobnd. Houses, stills and pressss were erected as if by magic, which utterly “ aston
ished the natives.” The services of experience^men. and natives of the island were pro
cured, and very soon tho proprietors of the PLANTATION BIT 1323 were in a position
to supply their laboratory with all tho perfectly pure St. Croix Bum needed in mannfac
. C-L2A2 TONJC AND INVIOCBATOE. The above cut represents
the nY tve: wishing toe sugar-cane and otherwise preparing it for tho stills and presses.
Fever and Arne, Intermittent and Malarious Fevers, Dyspepsia, and
ether kindred diseases, the use cf tho PLANTATION BITTERS is unsurpassed in the
history cf tht/ror!! Cver 579 million bottles arc disposed cf annually. They are
