Tbe Wnrrentou Tragedies.
On Friday morning, March 12, Mr. Charles
Wallace, Editor of ibe “Georgia Clipper,”
at Warren ton, was killed in the public streets
by Dr. G. W. Darden, whom ho had de
nounced in his paper of the previous day. The
cause of ti.e offensive article was the rejection
of Mr. Wallace's application for membership
in the Masonic Lodge, which he suspected the
Doctor of effecting. The paper was issued on
Thursday, and Friday morning as Wallace
was going from his breakfast to his office and
passing the Doctor's office, Darden shot him
in the side with a load from one barrel of a
double barreled shot-gun, whereupon Wallace
turned back and received the charge from the
other barrel in the back of his head, and fell
and died immediately.
Dr. Darden, still armed, shut himself in his
office, and for a time refused to admit any one,
but subsequently surrendered to the Sheriff
and requested to be placed in the jail for pro
tection, though strangely enough he was al
lowed to retain his arms. The same evening
a nioli of disguised men numbering some 40
or 50, forcibly entered the jail and after smo
king him out of his cell, allowed him to write
tohU wife and then literally riddled his body
with balls.
Minister shot.
On the evening of March 9th, at the resi
dence of Mr. Robert Mann near Ainericus,
as the Rev. Samuel Anthony was engaged in
solemnizing the marriage rites between Mr.
Daniel Bagley and Miss Sarah Mann, niece
*nd step-daughter of the man of the house.
Mr. Mann interruoted the nuptial rites, and
with threats and curses attempted to shoot the
groom, when Mr. Anthony seized the gun, and
endeavored to pacify the drunken and infuria
ted intruder. In the struggle which ensued,
Jh® gun was discharged and the contents en
tered the right groin of the venerable minister.
An hour afterwards the ceremony which had
been so tragically interrupted, was completed,
te'e pale old man faint and w eak being suppor
ted on pillows while the binding words were
spoken. Latest accounts state that 113 bird
shot had been extracted from the wound, and
the minister still survived. He thinks Mr.
Mann did not intend to shoot him at all, and
probably intended to shoot Mr. Bagley, whose
marriage he forbade.
